The Henry Ford Family Tree.

Edsel was the FAMOUS son, Henry Ford II’s father.

September 4th will always be “E-Day” — the day in 1957 that the Ford Motor company launched the ill-fated Edsel — the “E car“.

As such September 4 is a day to commemorate and celebrate FAILURE — brilliant failures at that.

Interestingly, “E-Day” is the ONLY event of any note that has EVER happened on September 4.

Some, ill-formed lists of ‘anniversaries’ will list September 4 as the birthday of Henry Ford. NOT SO. The Henry Ford, who created Ford, was born on June 30, 1863.

September 4 is the birthday of his grandson, Henry Ford II. BIG, difference.

He was the one that launched the Edsel. It was to coincide with HIS birthday!

The ‘Edsel’ was quite the ego trip for Henry Ford II. It was named after his DAD!

The name “Edsel” itself, IRONICALLY, is an old English word for ‘rich’. Well the Ford’s were indeed rich, though not thanks to the Edsel.

The kids would definitely like to see this become another cherished annual family ritual — i.e., that of going to Acadia National Park in June, just for a few days, to make sure that everything made it through the winter.

The good news is that it did. Acadia National Park, and the whole area around it, continues to be blinking beautiful. This was our 4th trip in 2 years. [See here for the other Acadia posts.] The Park is about 230 miles from here so it is not a ‘big’ trip — like say going to Canyon de Chelly.

We did our favorite jaunts around Mount Desert Island, a 2-hour nature cruise on Frenchman Bay and (now that we know it) a swing through the Schoodic Peninsula — with a visit to Raven’s Nest and an attempt to get to Little Moose Island. Yes, I will post more pictures as time permits. Lots of things to share with you.

Neato!

I think I know where this mansion is. I think we have even driven by it twice. Kind of hard to miss.

From what I can see it is on the way to our ‘secret’ Cooksey Overlook. Well to be fair ALL the grand mansions are that way.
