It Felt Real Good To Watch Some Proper Test Cricket After Nearly 3-Months & ‘The Century’ Was A Bonus. (Smile)

by Anura Guruge

I haven’t watched any cricket in nearly 3-months. There wasn’t anything compelling. Yes, there was Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh but those matches tend to be boring grinds. So, I have been watching Netflix & Amazon Prime & quite enjoying it.

But, I sure wanted to watch this England v New Zealand series. I haven’t seen New Zealand, in any format, in nearly (or possibly even more than) a year. So, it was good to see them though I was disappointed to see ‘Kane Williamson’, a cricketer that I am rather fond of, get out rather cheaply.

I make a point of trying NOT to divulge SCORES or big news in my headlines. I do NOT want to spoil it for those that haven’t got around to watching the highlights. They don’t have to read the BODY of the post. But, they might SEE the Header.

That said, getting to watch “Devon Conway’s” debut century was a bonus. Right from the very start I had this feeling that he would score a debut century. And, was I right. Nice, classy effort. Nothing flamboyant. Just very workmanlike.

Well, this is good. Watching cricket, on a daily basis, is very much a part of my life.

CNN, Covering The British COVID Vaccinations, Claims That The People of Cardiff, Wales, Are ‘English’!

by Anura Guruge

Well if the U.S. President, Trump, cannot distinguish between England, Wales, Scotland, N. Ireland & the U.K., I guess we shouldn’t expect CNN to get it right either. This was CNN’s ‘Brooke Baldwin’ doing today’s 1pm news.

Yes, she was very excited to get a live report from Cardiff — which happens to be the capital of Wales.

She was gushing …

She then says something along the lines of: “… the English people of Cardiff, Wales … among the first to get the vaccine …“.

Oh, dear!

English = England

Welsh = Wales

Scottish = Scotland

Irish = Boston (Smile).

England & West Indies Players & Umpires Take A Knee At The 1st Test — I CRIED!

by Anura Guruge

I have always said it, & I will gladly & proudly say it again. There is no other game like cricket. Push comes to shove we still always strive to ‘make it cricket‘. A genuine gentleman’s game — in the sense of ‘good manners’ & sportsmanship. Yes, yes, yes … we have had our incidents.

But, this was TRULY special.

I cried. Tears poured down my face. I was happy!

Very well organized & orchestrated. All the Windies had thin black gloves that they wore on their upraised, clenched fist arm. Very moving.

This was good for cricket. This was good for the World. Shame that Trump would NOT even understand. His loss.

Thank you, ALL.

This is why I truly love cricket.

Australia v New Zealand Boxing Day Test Match Will Be On Christmas Day In The U.S.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE.

This has to do with the 16 hour time difference between Melbourne, Australia and U.S. East Coast. That is a BIG time difference. But, it is still going to be incongruous having a Test match being played on Christmas day — even if it is at 7pm at night. That said, I will probably watch it.

As has been the case in recent years we will have two parallel Tests — the other the South Africa v England Test from South Africa. That will air on Boxing Day.

Yet again I have to thank my new friend, Craigie, in Halifax, Yorkshire, for bringing this to my attention on Facebook. Thank you, again, Craigie. I have come to realize that she is even MORE of a ‘red poppy’ devotee than I — and that takes some doing.

St John’s, Slimbridge is in Gloucestershire, England. All of England is beautiful, Gloucestershire one of the nicest, most verdant parts.

Amazingly clever. Bravo. So evocative and spot on. I initially thought they were made out of clear plastic. I was wrong. Wire mesh. How brilliant.

And it works so, so well. I am humbled.

When I first saw the pictures it reminded me of the ‘Korean War Memorial’ in Washington, D.C. But, on reflection they are very different. I think the Slimbridge ghosts are so realistic. Wow.

I really am in awe.

An England v Wales Showdown Is NOW Possible At The Rugby World Cup 2019 — WOW!

by Anura Guruge

Click to access my post from just 3-days ago.

That was a turn for the books. New Zealand trounced by England at a World Cup — this time in Rugby. New Zealand did NOT look like the team that I had seen in the previous matches.

What was that statistic I heard — New Zealand’s FIRST World Cup loss since 2007! First loss in 19 matches. England last won against them in 2012 (albeit not in a World Cup).

So, this was quite sensational. Quite the match. I watched the (above) highlights TWICE — just to make sure.

Wales go in as FAVORITES.

So, we have a good chance. Fingers crossed.

Who do I support: Wales FIRST, England second. SMILE. At my core I am Welsh. SMILE.

Wales v England Showdown Is Possible At The Rugby World Cup 2019, But Unlikely.

by Anura Guruge

For it to happen now, both England and Wales will have to win their respective semi-finals this weekend. That would mean a England v Wales final. That would be great for us the British, but, alas, I just don’t think it will happen.

Why? The New ZealandAll Blacks‘ — defending Champions from not just the last World Cup, but the one before that too.

They have been awesome. Just magical to watch. While England, obviously, has played well to get to the Semis, I just have a sneaking feeling that the All Blacks will outgun and outrun them come Saturday.

But, we can keep our fingers crossed.

Cricket Umpiring, At The Highest Level, Has To Be Revamped — Too Many Outcome-Changing WRONG Decisions.

by Anura Guruge

From ESPN ‘cricinfo’, of course. Click to ENLARGE.

Of course DRS (Decision Review System) has made a HUGE difference, and for that we should all be thankful. I often, watching DRS in action, SHUDDER to think of ALL the bad decisions that must have taken place in cricket over the centuries — all of us having see our fair share, first hand.

There was a time, even up until quite recently, when the ICC ‘Test Panel’ umpires seemed to be doing extremely well, i.e., they had got most of their decisions RIGHT.

But, something has gone wrong recently and, OF COURSE, to the chagrin of all cricket lovers (who adore FAIR PLAY), the outcome of the ICC 2019 World Cup might have been the result of a bad call! And this is what kills me. There were 4 umpires and a match referee. Yes, 4 umpires & a match referee. So, between the FIVE (5) of them they did NOT know the overthrow rule? That is ludicrous.

Then we had the Eng. v Ireland Test and now the 1st Ashes Test. Wow. The number of bad or wrong decisions. Yes, of course, it is DRS that is highlighting these. Without ‘ultraedge’ and ‘ball-tracking’ we would not know what really happened. But, now thanks to technology we do.

We have to change the system for International games, i.e., Tests, ODIs and T20Is. At a minimum ALL out decisions should be checked, if nothing else for no-balls. It is not fair that the no-ball checking is only done for ‘special’ players — sometimes the batsman, often the bowler. But, let’s start by using DRS to make sure that every out is indeed a valid out. Yes, it will add delay but I think we will tolerate that. We now check some outs for no-ball. Just make that apply to all outs, no exceptions.

But, that leaves open, outs that are deemed not-outs. What do we do there? Yes, ideally we would review those too BUT that could get out of hand. Players will appeal for stupid stuff hoping against hope. It will become a time-waster. That is a problem. I do NOT have an answer for that. I am still thinking.

Were There Any Royals At Lord’s For The ICC Cricket World Cup — England vs. New Zealand?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. The Queen at Lord’s (when she was much younger).

It was THE CRICKET World Cup and England was playing.

But, I did NOT see any Royals on the TV coverage I have watched so far, and I have watched about 4-hours of it, ball-by-ball.

Yes, I saw soon-to-be ex-Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband. That was good and I am glad she was there. A nice way to show your support while having a day off. She sure has earned that right.

I did NOT see the Queen or expect to see her. Yes, she used to visit Lord’s, without fail, for the Saturday of the Lord’s Test Match and I have seen her there often — since I too, given that I lived outside London, used to be a Saturday man.

One or more of the Princes should have been there. They must like cricket. They have to like cricket.

I might have to look into this. I might have to write another letter to the Queen!
