‘Scott & Bailey’ (Detective Series) On ‘Britbox’ ( & YouTube) — Another Winner; Very Clever Interwoven Plot Lines.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and view here.

We have been engrossed & entranced. We just finished watching all 6 episodes of Season 1.

Very clever. Interwoven plot lines — two underlying that ran through all six episodes, and then one new plot/story, involving a murder, for each episode. You get caught up in that per episode plot and forget that it is all part of a bigger picture — one in this case involving a serial killer. Very well done.

We liked it. Did not realize, till I was looking at BritBox on my PC, that there are other Seasons. That makes me happy.

It is also available on YouTube. That is good for some of you. I am glad.

Highly recommend. Good, British detective/crime series. You will enjoy it IF you like that genre — as we do.

‘Thorne: Sleepyhead’ (Detective Show) On ‘Britbox’ — Wow, Quite The Story, Very Dramatic.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the Britbox listing.

We just finished watching all three episodes of this show. Never heard of it until we saw the ‘promotions’ on Britbox.

Glad we did.

Quite the show. Very dramatic. I guess it could even be classed as a psychological thriller. Very clever. Lots of twists. Very good.

Recommend it highly. Hope there are other episodes. Would definitely watch.

STARZ “Howards End” Series (2018) Is At An End.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access STARZ homepage for this NEW series.

YouTube trailer for the STARZ Series.

The last episode of Season 1, viz. Episode 4, aired this last Friday, April 29, 2018. That from what I see concludes the story as written by the incomparable E.M. Forster in 1910. On the STARZ Webpage there is an implication that there might be a Season 2. But, that would have to be an major embellishment to Forster’s original.

The series was immaculately produced. The cinematography was BEYOND first class; it was lavish and sumptuous. A visual treat.

I am, however, not convinced that serializing “Howards End” worked — at least for those of us that watched the episodes weekly as they came out. The weekly gap between episodes broke the spell and often you struggled to think back to the prior episode to recall the entire thread in its full glory. But, now that all four episodes are out you could watch them back-to-back.

Each episode was nominally 55-minutes. So, that is 220 minutes (3H 40 minutes) in total. So, here is something else that I found interesting. The classic 1992 movie was 142 minutes (2h 20 minutes) long. So, the STARZ version is a full one hour 18 minutes longer! What does that mean. Did they spin out the story or did the movie omit scenes. I plan to watch the movie this week, if I can.

We are glad we watched the series. We looked forward to it and are sad that it has concluded. Maybe we should have recorded all the episodes and then watched it over a couple of days.

Well, now you know what options you have.

Yes, the episodes are still available on STARZ.

‘Jane Goodall’ Documentary On ‘National Geographic’ Tonight.

by Anura Guruge

I had read in the printed “National Geographic” magazine (to which we subscribe without fail) that they were going to be doing a new documentary series on Jane and her chimpanzees. I am not sure whether this is it.

I haven’t watched anything on the ‘NatG‘ channel in months, so had not seen any promos.

Happened to hear an ad for it on a local radio station this afternoon while driving to Walmart. Checked the schedule when we got back. It was on sure enough. Same episode repeated, back-to-back, at 8pm and 9pm (Eastern). I recorded the 8pm.

I cannot find when this episode or any other will be shown again. But, I promise to look.

I will keep you posted. I wanted to give you a heads up — though I know it is late. Sorry.

“Great British Bake Off” (GBBO) Season 6, i.e., 2015 — Last Few Episodes No Longer On YouTube.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access Season 6 Episode 1 on YouTube.

All of the Season 6 (2015) episodes, including the Final, i.e., Episode 11, were available on YouTube in October/November last year. We know because we watched them all on YouTube — typically 36 hours after they aired in the U.K. We got it down to a fine art towards the end. We knew who posted decent clips and who were just pretending to post.

A few days ago I got a message from somebody I did not know on Facebook asking if I knew how to find the Season 6 Final on YouTube. I thought it would be trivial. It wasn’t. A lot of Season 6 videos have been deleted. It is possible that the BBC or PBS is doing this. I sought help from the kids. We found a YouTube ‘library’ with 14 supposedly Season 6 videos. So we assumed that Episode 11 was in there. Wrong. Appears that Season 6 episodes beyond episode 6 are not on YouTube.

If you know better PLEASE help. I am going to look around on the PBS channel on Roku etc.

So take this as a Heads Up.

“Downton Abbey”, Season 6 DVD, With “2015 Christmas Special”, Now Available On Amazon — $19.99.

by Anura Guruge

Click to go to Amazon for the DVD.

The “Downton Abbey” Season 6 DVD and Blu-Ray are now available from Amazon (U.S.), the DVD a full $10 less than it was first advertised in November 2015.

Before Season 6 started airing on PBS on Sunday, January 3, 2016 I was sure, at the urging of the kids, that I was going to get the DVD, when it became available in the U.S. (as of January 26), even at $30. I am no longer sure. Counting the “2015 Christmas Special” there are 9 episodes on the DVD. But we have already seen 4 of these episodes and the 5th is being aired (for us to DVR) this Sunday, January 31. So when I get this DVD on Monday there will only be 4 new episodes on it. Yes, that is NOT bad but I know that we will just watch them back to back, 2 a day, as we did when we were watching the prior seasons on Amazon Prime. That would mean we would be done in 2 days, 3 days max. That would be it. So, I would rather spin it out for a month. That is the current logic.

Two gone. Lauren Katz, who is in a class to herself, has been ‘Star Baker’ on both episodes. She will win. Click on image to access ABC Webpage for the show.

greatbritishbakeofdfsfsfWe have now watched the first two episodes and we are all in agreement that the 6 American bakers on the ABC show are nowhere near as good as any of the bakers that have appeared in the iconic (and now widely aped) “The Great British Bake Off“.

Given that I, a Brit through-and-through, am always biased, I didn’t say anything about this to begin with. But the two kids having devoured all the episodes of Seasons 4 to 6 (the latter on YouTube) not only adore the British show but are now in the ranks of the cognoscente. They were the first to comment on this halfway through episode 1. Deanna concurred.

I heard the same refrain from the 3 ‘girls’ during episode 2. I have to agree. Bar Lauren Katz who is in a class by herself the others don’t appear to have the expertise, technique, experience or finesse of those that have appeared in the BBC shows. Some of the creations in the ABC show have been laughable if not downright pitiful. Just goes to make you appreciate how lucky we have been with the BBC show.

Good news: there are tons of episodes of the BBC show on YouTube
