All The Cricket Action Is Now On ‘ESPN+’, NOT ‘Willow TV’; ‘Willow’ TV Is Sucking Wind.

by Anura Guruge

There is plenty of LIVE cricket again
BUT NOT on Willow TV.

It would appear that Willow TV screwed up BIG TIME when it came to getting 2021 cricket series coverage licenses.

They have NO REAL, i.e., MEN’s International, cricket for the next 3.5-months. But, in the meantime some hard to ignore series are taking place: West Indies vs Sri Lanka T20 & Australia vs New Zealand. In past years these would have been on Willow TV. They had the ‘franchise’ for all those countries. But, not right now.

So, a BIG Heads Up. Don’t sign-up (or RENEW) Willow TV before checking what is coming up.

I was FORCED to check ESPN+. 12-, 13-years ago ESPN+ carried a lot of cricket. Then the likes of Willow stepped in. The tide seems to be turning again.

So, as I said, a Heads Up.

The problems, as I pointed out a few days ago, are with Willow TV.

But, I get Willow via Sling TV. So I have to deal with Sling TV.

I can’t watch most of the cricket matches I want to watch: Bangladesh vs. India series and Sri Lanka vs. Pakistan.

60% of the cricket programs WILL NOT LOAD.

I kid you not. I get SERVER-side errors. Probably a capacity issue on the servers.

The Sling TV reps. are even too dumb to find my account let alone talk about a solution.

So I cancelled the entire damn $10/month Sling TV account.

Yes, there is plenty of cricket, FOR FREE, on ESPN.

Sling TV, when it was DishWorld, was EXCELLENT. Outstanding. Now they suck.

They had a great call center in Montreal, Canada.

Now the reps. can barely speak English!

Do NOT subscribe to Sling TV.

One World Sports, via SkyNews Sports, is providing OUTSTANDING coverage of the English International matches. http://www.oneworldsports.com/

I got the Roku 3 (50% off) from DishWorld — now Sling TV — so that I could get Willow Cricket to watch cricket. That was in February and the Roku has changed our lives. We love the Roku.

Thanks to the Roku I also got ESPN Cricket 2015 and that enabled me to watch both the 2015 World Cup and the IPL 2015. That was a bonus and treat.

After I finished the World Cup I was watching Willow — most days. More cricket there than I can keep up.

Then a few days ago, serendipitously, I discovered One World Sports. When I go to Sling TV I had it ALWAYS tuned to Willow. So I didn’t see any other programming. Then the other day by accident I selected One World Sports. It was showing cricket. It was showing the England vs New Zealand Test match from Lord’s! I couldn’t believe it. Wow. Very good coverage too. I was in the midst of watching Australia humiliating the West Indies and didn’t have time to watch the other test. Two days ago I started watching the 2nd Test, Eng. vs. NZ and I am totally captivated. Can’t wait to go and have my late brunch so that I can watch another 30 minutes!

So just letting you know that there is MORE cricket on Sling TV than just Willow.

Got that? Isn’t it GREAT. Enjoy.

Fancy that.
I had no idea.
I just happened to catch a glimpse of it on ESPN cricinfo.com
when I was gathering material for my West Indies post.

I typically don’t try to follow cricket news because I do not
want to see (or hear) the scores since I am always WAY behind
in terms of watching the matches on TV.
So I avoid cricket other than on TV.

So here is some information.

The U.S. lost to Canada.
As I expected lots of Indian and British names —
I am surprised that there are no Sri Lankansin the U.S. team.

Ruvindu Gunasekera, the Canadian opener,
the TOP scorer of the match — with 51,
is, of course, from Sri Lanka. Classic name.

But the U.S. has won against Suriname & Bermuda.

This, wrapped-up in 3 days, Test Match was never short of excitement.
It had the feel of an ODI and lets face it,
two of the innings were short of 50 overs.

[The entire Test was 250.2 overs.]

It, to an West Indies supporter of 40 years, was good to see that they
finally mustered enough resolve and technique to score 192 runs in the 4th innings.
When they were 80-4, with poor Shiv Chanderpaul gone for an uncharacteristic duck,
I was yet again resigned to see the Windies collapse and crumble.
I wasn’t convinced that they were going to win until they were within 4 runs with
6 wickets in hand — and even then they managed to lose Bravo.

I have become a Jermaine Blackwood believer.
He impressed me NO END.
I would liked to have seen him go to another century in the 1st innings …
and get his well deserved 50 in the second.
I just read that Viv rates him. If Viv thinks he is an unpolished diamond,
that is good enough for me.

My heart bleeds for Shiv. What a nightmare of a series for him.
I hate to have to say this but I think it is time for him to bid adieu —
and we will all applaud him for his yeoman service to the Windies.
What a man, what a cricketers. But, at 40, time, at last, has caught up with Shiv.

Felt bad, very bad for Shai Hope. He needs a bit more experience.
I have hopes, maybe not great, for Kraigg Brathwaite. He has shown class.
Jason Holder will prevail. He could have batted better in this Test.
He, however, bowled superbly.
I think I saw Gary, in a snazzy suit, as usual, watching the Test.
He must be able to relate to Holder and Blackwood.

3rdtestscorecardwienf

I enjoyed the Test. 18 wickets in the 2nd day. It was heady stuff.

Shame the series is already over.

Just saw on Willow that the Australians are playing 2 Tests against the West Indies in June.
That is GREAT — but why just 2 Tests? That is not enough.
I guess the Islands can’t generate the crowds or the money. Shame.
But then again, I am still going to agitate that the whole concept of ‘The West Indies’
needs to be reexamined and reevaluated. International cricket should ONLY be
between bona fide sovereign nations.

Click to ENLARGE and savor. From ESPN cricinfo.com (with thanks).

I first started watching the Bangladeshi, in earnest and in interest, last Fall during their series against the West Indies. A few of their players, e.g., Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal etc., caught my eye. You could see that they were awfully talented, very committed and loved the game. They reminded me of young West Indies players of yore. I followed them in the ICC 2015 World Cup — rooting for them to win their matches. They played with panache and that always appeals to me. I was glad they made the quarter-finals.

I just finished watching the 2nd Bangladesh v Pakistan ODI. That the two teams are playing, in Bangladesh no less, intrigues me. I am old enough to remember Bangladesh’s war of independence from Pakistan. [Oh, I also did not know until that match that Bangladesh (too) has a female prime minister — and she looks impressive (and very gentle).] I watched the first ODI too. Yes, I know that they won the series 3-0 though I have yet to watch the 3rd ODI or the T20. Bangladesh played beyond themselves. It was electric. Loved it. They sure came of age.

Yes, they still, like Sri Lanka in the early 1980s, need a bit more exposure and experience. But this series will give them heart and confidence. It was very gratifying to watch them. Another national team making the transition to a true Test stature team. Bravo. I am looking forward to watching all the remaining matches, including each day of the Test matches, on Willow TV (via my Roku 3). I have to confess that I have a surfeit of cricket on hand. Who would have thought that I would ever live, in the U.S., to say that. Yes, of course, I watched the highlights of all 10 days of the Two WI v. Eng. Tests. That the West Indies lost, so pathetically, did not please me. What a contrast. The Bangladeshi play like what the West Indies used to do 30 years ago. How the tide, something the Bangladeshis know very well, has turned.

So, today, I salute the Bangladesh cricket team. Keep up the good work.

Jason Holder, I applaud and THANK YOU.

Holderepsn1

jasonholderwiki

Click to access Wikipedia entry for the 23 year old, 6′ 7″ Jason Holder, THE MAN.

Jason Holder’s 2nd innings, 103*, in 149 balls spanning 216 minutes, on April 17, 2015 to SAVE the match for the West Indies was classy and masterful. It was inspirational, uplifting and humbling.

He is 23 years old and it was but his 4th Test Match. He put so many of the other West Indies batsmen to shame.

Despite his relative ‘youth’ (and yes, of course, we have had teenagers playing Test cricket) his maturity, talent and potential have obviously not gone unnoticed. Yes, he is the ODI Captain — though I have mixed feelings about that. But that is another matter.

Lets celebrate his tremendous achievement on Friday, April 17, 2015. I, given their erratic performances of late, was already reconciled that the West Indies were going to LOSE.

I sat down, at 11 pm, on Friday, to watch the Willow Cricket highlights — via Sling TV on my Roku 3 — with a heavy heart, ready to see England, clinically, perform the last rites. I was hoping that my other man, the still doughty Shivnarine Chanderpaul would score a gritty century, with Blackwood (who did score a wonderful 112* in the first innings) chipping in with at least 80. I was distraught when Shiv was lbw. He is 40. His reactions are not what they used to be.

I never expected the West Indies to SAVE the match.

Then hope, thanks to Holder, sprang — eternal. I was even working out run rates for the West Indies to WIN.

Yes, I was on the edge of the seat  for the last 20 overs. It was like at T20.

I was OFFENDED, and I am not sure what Holder and Roach thought (but they too should take exception), when the dressing room sent instructions, with 5 overs to go, and Holder at 90*, that Holder should focus on holding out for the 5 overs rather than getting his MAIDEN 1st class (let alone Test) hundred. That was UNNECESSARY. This boy (and he is the same age as my son, who middle name pays homage to Gordon Greenidge) knows HIS GAME (and I mean that in the full panoply meanings that that word can convey) better than most of the CLOWNS in the Dressing Room. He did great. I was so proud of him. That he would survive the remaining overs was never in doubt and that he would get a century in the process was also never in doubt. This was GREAT. Made me happy. Made me very happy.

No, I am still going to agitate that the West Indies cricket team should be disbanded and barred from the ICC. There is NO COUNTRY called the ‘West Indies’ and as such there should be NO TEAM that plays as such. International cricket should ONLY be played between genuine nations. Period. Simple as that.

But, Jason Holder, HOLD your head up high. You did GREAT. He could be the next Gary Sobers! Think of that.

I am, these days, spoilt for choice when it comes to cricket! I watch the Indian IPL on ESPN Cricket 2015 while having my late lunch and then watch the WI v. England Test on Willow on Sling TV — this abundance of cricket made possible, for I, thanks to the irreproachable Roku 3. To begin with, mainly because I had NOT given it any thought, I did not put 2 & 2 together that some qualified West Indies players MIGHt not be around because they were playing in the IPL. Then it began to slowly dawn on me — and with that get me kind of slightly riled.

I never thought the day would come when I would ever say this, because I do like him and he has given me (for a man) much pleasure. But, Chris Gayle being in India does not bother me a jot. I am done and over with Chris. Yes, of course, I enjoyed his 215 in the World Cup — but it was kind of bogus because he was out. Chris is history. Not so with Sunil Narine and maybe even Dwayne Bravo. They, if they were needed, should be playing for the WI in the Test, not poncing about in India in their colored pyjamas. [Well you do know, that deep down, when push comes to shove, I am, per my vintage, a cricket purist. Men in white playing with a red ball, deep down, is more gratifying than players scurrying around in colored garb.]

Shame. Of course I remember the genesis of all of this with Kerry Packer in the 1970s. I was very wrapped up in that. Yes, yes, yes. I understand. Money. But it still makes me sad.

But this has crystallized something that came to mind during the World Cup. The West Indies as a CRICKET TEAM should be history. An anachronism. There is no country called the West Indies. So there should be NO cricket team. More on that on a later post.

960x540Sling TV (née DishWorld) had a lot of server-related problems the weekend of April 11-12, 2015 — this coinciding with when it added HBO to its offerings. Just ahead of the weekend they did release a new Sling TV App — also on Roku. It is NOT clear whether Roku automatically updated the APP.

Sling support recommends that you manually install the NEW APP — after signing-off from the old and then having Roku uninstall it. Today, I did it. Not sure whether it helped much. I can get to Sling today, which is more than what I could do yesterday. Not amused.

Amazing the contrast with ESPN. I am getting increasingly impressed with ESPN. They are beginning to rock. Sling, on the the other hand, has got off to a rocky start. Hope this helps.
