Kind of funny. I wrote about this ascent & the lack of a picture of Edmund Hillary at the summit just 10-days ago.
I always remember that it was in 1953 since that was the year I was born. But, I was born in September. So, this happened just before I was born.
The key here is that we all now appreciate that this was the 1st CONFIRMED ascent. That is good. We might still get proof that George Mallory, in 1924, beat them to it.
It is also good that more & more places, like Wikipedia, have started listing Sherpa Tenzing Norgay AHEAD of New Zealander, Edmund Hillary. As Hillary himself, albeit quite late in his life, has confirmed Tenzing was LEADING when they reached the summit. Plus, we only have a picture of Tenzing at the summit.
From “Tenzin’s” 1958 book, which I have also had most of my life.
I am very familiar with this picture. From John Hunt’s book (above).
With the iconic photograph, shown at top, you can’t really tell who is under all that protective gear. So, it is easy to kind of think it is Hillary. It is NOT. It is Tenzing. The captions clearly state that. It is just that we tend to ind of forget that.
Also known as the Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale. Interesting person. Love his name with the double ‘Douglas’. Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Douglas-Hamilton,_14th_Duke_of_Hamilton
Mount Everest was very much a part of the ‘British Raj‘ and, of course, in the 1930s, nearly all of the Everest related exploits were invariably British led. And that, of course, continued into the 1950s with the British-led conquest of Everest.

This time the Mirror. I was never a reader of ‘The Mirror’. I was a ‘Daily Mail’, ‘Sun’ (of course) and Broadsheet reader. But, this is a decent article. Click.
That THE Queen (and as far as I am now concerned there is really only one) was crowned in June 1953 is something that I have ‘always’ known. It was the year of my Birth, though the coronation did not wait for me. I also, being the Everest buff, know that the first KNOWN ascent of Everest took place just prior to the coronation — the British-led, Commonwealth-heavy team wanting to honor the new Queen. So, the 60th anniversary of the Tenzing-Hillary ascent always comes a few days ahead — as we celebrated.
I am a born-again Royalist. In my ‘youth’ I really didn’t see a need for the Royals. But, I have, with age, become a huge fan of THIS Queen. She is a treasure. Can’t say the same about all the Royals, but this Queen, indubitably, stands alone. I, like millions of others, will be sad to see her go. She has been my Queen all my life!
