San Diego Zoo, Elephant Close-Call With 2-Year Old & Brain-Dead Father — It Was An African Elephant.

by Anura Guruge

What puzzles me most is how he managed to get into the enclosure. Two things here. I would have thought that the zoo would have had enough barriers to keep a person way. Plus, I would have thought that at least one ‘zoo keeper‘ would always be within striking distance of this enclosure. It is not as if they would not have enough to do.

In the YouTube videos you can see images of the brain-dead dad. He looks drugged & I detect some ‘Asian’ in him. Obviously he was NOT thinking straight — BUT then again I used to go & pet a wild, fully-grown Bengal tiger at an open air zoo in England! But, in my case I was only putting MY ARM at risk — & I had spent days building up a ‘rapport’ with that tiger.

However, what struck me the MOST was that it was an African elephant, most likely a bull at that. How can you tell? The ears. Yes, African elephants, bull or cow, are markedly more aggressive than Indian elephants.

Watching the videos I learnt that they had both African & Indian (also called ‘Asian’) elephants in the enclosure. I find it interesting that none of the other elephants came to see what was going on. They tend to be curious animals.

I am by no means an expert, but having grown up in Ceylon I know a bit about Indian elephants — given the nearly daily exposure we would have to domesticated one. I like elephants. But, I am partial to Indian elephants. To I, they are better looking & have far better temperaments.

Bottom line here. Do not try to break into elephant enclosures — full stop. Exposing a 2-year old to an elephant you do NOT know is beyond stupid. Yes, in Ceylon, with a domesticated elephant that I already knew, I would have no compunction about offering a 2-year old baby for them to pet! Yes, they will PET a baby with their trunk with GREAT AFFECTION. They are BIG cuddly puppies! Very loyal & affectionate. SMILE. But, I did STRESS domesticated — & Indian.

Harry Most Likely Was Born On The Wrong Side Of The Blanket, He Should Never Have Been ‘His Royal Highness’ (HRH).

by Anura Guruge

Yes, yes, yes, I have heard all the denials BUT my eyes don’t deceive me. When I see Harry I see his mother’s (i.e., Princess Diana’s) acknowledged boyfriend, James Hewitt. Google it. I am not the only one who believes it. Look at the above pictures. Look at him next to William. Do they look ANYTHING like each other. Just the color of the hair. Exact same color as James Hewitt.

Yes, of course, it would be very awkward for the Royal Family to admit to this — i.e., that he is illegitimate. This would have been unthinkable when he was ‘The Spare’ — i.e., replacement if something happened to his older brother. Now it doesn’t matter anymore given that his brother, William, has children of his own. The line of succession goes through them. Hence, why Harry is no longer the spare. Instead he is number 6 inline. Hence why he was already a MINOR royal before all this uncalled for fuss in 2020.

So, that is my take. I have always, narry an exception, claimed he was not of royal blood. So, I for one am glad that he will no longer have a royal title. As we Brits say: GRBR.

The New Series ‘Jennie’, About Winston Churchill’s American Mother, On ‘Acorn’ TV, Is Quite The Story.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Acorn’ TV homepage for this new series.

I saw it being advertised on the banner of ‘Acorn‘ for the last week or so — but, I think it only became available today. We watched Episode 1 and it was GOOD.

Alas, though new to Acorn, it is NOT new. Appears it was shown on Thames in 2009 — so, 10-years ago. So, the quality, alack, is not that of ‘Victoria‘ on PBS. But, it is not dreadful. It is better than what you will find of YouTube.

I knew a bit about her suitor and husband Lord Randolph Churchill given that he is my hero Winston’s father. So, I learnt a fair amount about both of them in this first episode — how they met, their whirlwind romance and ahead-of-schedule marriage. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.

Looks very promising and I know that Lord Randolph’s story gets more colorful, though sad.

“Tommy’s Honour” Movie (2016) On Amazon Prime — More Than Just Golf; Engaging Human Drama.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access IMDb.com listing for this movie.

YouTube trailer.

Watched it because it came up on our Amazon Prime Video list.

I was a tad worried that it would be very golf-centric — and golf has no appeal to I. I find it exceedingly boring and pointless. But, we were pleasantly surprised. The golf is in tasteful moderation and easy enough to watch. The rest is a rather engaging human drama about families: fathers, sons, lovers and wives. Very well put together. Makes you want to know what happens. Has you rooting for some. Plus it is shot in luscious Scotland. Not bad at all. I would recommend it.

If you like golf, that would be a huge bonus. Lot of history about the game and even how golf bags were invented. Wow.

I was fortunate to meet Fr. Churchill, online, c. 2010, when I was working on my Pope books.

Fr. Churchill, STL, extremely gracious, patient and KNOWLEDGABLE, helped me tremendously — always taking time to answer my questions, translate Latin for I (he is both a Latin and theological scholar) and providing me with amazing photographs from his frequent trips to Rome. Two of his pictures grace the covers of my ‘Next Pope‘ books.

Fr. Churchill currently is Episcopal Vicar for Ecumenical Affairs, and Parish Priest of St Michael’s Ashtead, Surrey (U.K.)

He was THE MAN. The father of modern Western philosophy.

Cogito ergo sum” (I think, therefore I am). Yes, it is even better in the original Latin.

He understood the pain-brain connection 400-years AGO — and so many folks TODAY, have no clue.

Quite the intellect. Suffice to say I am very fond of René.

Father Anthony Churchill, STL, of Sussex, U.K. is one of my closest collaborators when it comes to my papal work. There are umpteen posts related to him on my ‘Popes and Papacy’ blog. Just do a search on ‘Anthony’. In addition to being a gifted (and very qualified) theologian, a beloved parish priest he is also an accomplished photographer. The front cover photo of my (once quite popular) “Next Pope 2011” was a picture taken by Father Churchill (who is not related to ‘Winston‘).

Father Churchill is currently on a well earned sabbatical and spending 5 months in Rome, a city that he has spent much time in — including time he spent studying for his ‘doctorate’ in theology. He has concelebrated Mass with Paul VI in Rome and Pope Benedict XVI in London.

I told him about my ‘6 Images a Day‘ project and asked him if he would supply me with some images from Rome. He had not taken his camera so these pictures are ones he takes with his iPad or iPhone. These pictures are also published on his Facebook page.

‘Revels North’ Kids Program On ‘Silk Road’ A Welcome Opportunity In The Northeast.

by Anura Guruge

I was taken back and delighted when I saw this, in the form of an e-mail, this morning. Kids in the Northeast, particularly in NH, could do with ALL the EXPOSURE they can to the wide world beyond the borders of their state (or in some cases their town). This is why I am such a big advocate of the Laconia ‘Multicultural Day‘.

Learning about the ‘Silk Road‘ could sure inspire kids to explore their wonderlust. The ‘Silk Road’ has it all: adventure, history, culture, art, music, romance. Yes, I have a soft spot in my heart of the ‘Silk Road’ — other than the fact that the ‘Silk Road’ also traversed through Ceylon, by birthplace. In 1983 when UNESCO started its grand ‘Silk Road’ program, my adoptive father, by then a 15 year old and Director-level official with UNESCO, was part of the team. As it happened the Ceylon (by then Sri Lanka) part of the UNESCO kick-off was scheduled for August 1983. I happened to be in Sri Lanka at the time. So given that my adoptive father and mother were also there, from Paris, as was the Director General (who I had met many times in Paris), we attended many of the events. Somewhere in this house there is also a lavishly produced UNESCO book, published in 1983, for the ‘Silk Road’. So ..

This GRAND. I am happy. Bravo.
