2016 Chinese New Year, At Least Two Dragon Parades In Boston Chinatown February 21. CONFIRMED.

I can now confirm that there will be AT LEAST two full-blown Dragon Parades in Boston’s Chinatown on Sunday, February 21, 2016 — to celebrate the ‘Year of the Red Monkey‘ Chinese New Year.

Yes, there were some parades on Sunday, February 14, 2016 — Valentine’s Day — too. BUT, as I repeatedly point out Chinese New Year, around the World is celebrated across TWO (2) Sundays after the New Year. New Year was Monday, February 8, 2016. So Feb. 14 was the 1st Sunday. Feb. 21 is the 2nd.

We, as is our practice, always planned to go on the 2nd Sunday — Feb. 21, 2016 — since we have discovered that that is when most of the FUN takes place. I can now confirm that there will be at least 2 dragon parades on February 21, most likely starting around 11 am.

As far as I can deduce there is no central organizing group for these dragon parades. They kind of happen, organically — each done by a community club. So that is as much as I can tell you.

Basically Feb. 21 is still good.

IF you want to go but feel that you don’t know the ropes you can come with us. Seriously.

Happy Chinese New Year.

Earthquake In Taiwan, Just Ahead Of The Chinese New Year, On Monday, Will Rattle Superstitious Asians.

The Chinese New Year for 2016, ‘Year of the Red Monkey‘, falls on Monday, February 8, 2016.

That an earthquake happened in Taiwan, a couple of days ahead of it, will be viewed by superstitious Asians as some kind of omen — bad luck.

I know. I am Asian too. So just a heads up.

2016 Chinese New Year, ‘Year Of The Red Monkey’, February 8th — Boston Chinatown Dragon Parade February 21?

by Anura Guruge

Chinese New Year 2016

As soon as the January 1 New Year is out of the way I start thinking about the next New Year that I can celebrate — and that is invariably the Chinese New Year. We like the Chinese New Year, now that we have got it all sorted out (we think).

The 2016 New Year per se is on Monday, February 8th.

But as I have often pointed out the New Year celebrations span at least 15 days and encompass TWO (2) Sundays. In the U.S. the public celebrations — i.e., the famous Dragon Parades and firecrackers — are typically on the 2nd Sunday. That means February 21, 2016 this year. I will confirm this for Boston Chinatown in the next couple of weeks. I will also find out what other events are taking place in New Hampshire. So stay tuned.

This blog can, and should be, your guide for all things ‘Chinese New Year in New Hampshire & Boston Chinatown‘.
