There was about 3 or 4 years in a row, starting c. 2007, when we used to go to “York’s Wild Kingdom” on an annual basis, usually on my birthday and at least once treating a bunch of local kids from Alton (NH) to a day at the zoo. Then other things like Whale Watches and Acadia entered the picture. Though she has been multiple times, and we have iconic pictures to prove it, Teischan couldn’t remember ever going to “York Zoo”. When Devanee is at Camp Teischan gets to go on two trips of her choosing to compensate. I rattled off a list of possibilities and one she picked was the zoo in Maine. So on Monday, August 17, 2015 we left early and got there sharp at 10 am just as they opened the gates.

It was a hot day and we knew that in advance. We were, however, surprised that it wasn’t packed. It was moderately busy but you could tell that it wasn’t crowded. That was good. Other than the ferris wheel with its cumbersome loading routine there was hardly any lines for anything. It was good in that respect. The heat, and I think it got up to 90°F at some point, also meant that the ‘Duck Pond’ — with its famous paddle boats — had a pungent “eau de duck poop” smell, but that was to be expected.

Exactly 3 months earlier I had taken Teischan to the Philadelphia Zoo. York’s Wild Kingdom is NOT Philadelphia Zoo.

The York Zoo is quaint and cute with its petting deer and the amusement park, but it is also old, dated and in someways very infuriating. Yes, it is very Maine and Downeast. None of the food places take credit cards. That is crazy. It has to be to avoid taxes! Places that don’t take credit cards when they should drive me nuts.

As a zoo it is a funny ol’ mixture. It has lions and two tigers and a fair smattering of other animals. The old elephant that used to be there a few years ago is gone. The enclosures are from the 1950s. Definitely not a modern zoo. That bothers me. BUT IT IS GOOD FOR KIDS. They love the petting zoo parts — goats, deer, sheep …

The rides are old and limited. The Ferris Wheel is an antique and they have to balance the weight of the riders which can be quite amusing in Maine. Teischan and I got called up ahead because they needed some ‘non-heavy’ riders. Funny.

It was OK. The heat didn’t help. But Teischan had fun. I tried the baseball batting cage — a first for me. It was interesting. I connected about 50% of the time. Took a load of pictures. I will try and share as we go along.

To say I am still a HUGE fan of Douglas would not capture my deep-seated, profound relationship with this AMAZING man.

He was beyond genius. A rare, alas fleeting, talent.

When the Doodle said ’61st birthday’ by heart skipped a beat.
He tragically died so young. Aged 49, in 2001. I was distressed.

We were contemporaneous and compatriots, though alas I never met him.
I became a ‘Hitchhiker’ with the 1981 BBC TV show. I have it on DVD.
Both my older kids got to love it and I think Devanee has seen it once.

I have read all his books and I am sure I have nearly all of them

I often use Hitchhiker phrases and most don’t have any idea what I am talking about.

Just recently I signed off an e-mail to my papal blog regulars with what I told them was a biblical reference:
Goodbye and Thanks for all the fish‘.

Thank YOU, Douglas. You were the Man.

Thank YOU, Google. You made my day.

The Equestrian High Jump Record, At 8.1′, That Has Stood For 64 Years Seems Incongruous To Me.

The record being set in Chile.

I have learned a lot of late by making a point to study Google Doodles.

I saw the above Chilean Colonel Alberto Larraguibel Morales (May 30, 1919 – April 12, 1995) Doodle on February 5, 2013 — the day after they produced a Doodle for Sri Lanka Independence Day.

I had no idea what they were talking about. Though I used to watch equestrian show jumping on TV, as all Brits are expected to do, I wasn’t familiar with the term ‘Puissance’. Maybe I did know it at one point but had forgotten it because I haven’t seen horse jumping on TV in the 29 years I have lived here (this time around).

Google has actually used the WRONG terminology. Puissance involves an upright fence. As you can see from the Doodle, Alberto Larraguibel was jumping over a sloped fence. That is the equestrian high jump competition ad it involves a single, sloping fence — the bottom half is hedge, the top made out of rails. So the Doodle is accurate in that respect.

Larraguibel (who at the time was a captain) broke the record for the the equestrian high jump, on February 5, 1949, at an official international event, in his native Chile.

He was riding quite a famous horse, chestnut stallion named ‘Huaso‘ (née ‘Faithful’).

They cleared, as officially ratified by the relevant sporting body, 8.1 feet (2.47 meters).

To beat the record somebody needs to jump 8.2 feet.

Same record jump, but head on. Does look quite high to me.

I like horses. Always have. I have done a very small amount of riding. I have watched Devanee taking riding lessons. But, I don’t know much about horses.

That height surprised me. 8.1′ Didn’t seem that high. I commented about this to Deanna.

Yes, I know the horse has a person, weighing at least 120 pounds, sitting on them — and I know the difference that 6 pounds make when I strap on my wrist weights to slog up Prospect Mountain Road.

Tonight I had some time. So I did what I had been meaning to do.

The World and Olympic records for High Jump. [I was in the ball park in what I had thought they were.]

Want to guess?

Men: …..8.03′ [2.45 m] World (set in 1993) and 7.84′ [2.39] Olympic (set in 1996).

Women: 6.86′ [2.09 m] World (set in 1987) and 6.76′ [2.06] Olympic (set in 2004).

So, the horse record is less than an 1″ different from the men’s high jump — obviously without the 120(+) burden.

Seems incongruous to me — especially since the horse record has stood for 64 years, one of the longest standing records in sports.

Keene Pumpkin Festival, Keene, NH — Was A Blast, Though The Record Was Missed By 1,500 Pumpkins.

WOW!

It was a BLAST. I had a great time. I got to do my Granite State Ambassador (GSA) ‘meet-and-greet’ stuff and that is always fun. This time around, in the evening, I got to hand out lighters and candles to folks so that they could participate in the lightning. Being handed a lighter just lit up the faces of so many.

The food prices were exceptional — in that they were CHEAP. Cheeseburgers and burgers were $3. Hot dogs were $2. Water or soda was $1! French fries was $3. Three shrimps on a stick was $3. Compared to the exploitation at this years Highland Games in Loon, this was a pleasant respite. Well done the food vendors. They were, obviously, working on the ‘cheap gas’ model — make up for the difference in price through volume. Seemed to work. I spent $30 on food, whereas I, on principle, refused to spend a cent on food at Loon (instead eating the food we had taken with us).

Huge crowds. I don’t know the numbers but definitely more than there was at this year’s Highland Games or Sandwich Fair. Much, much, much more than came to Laconia’s Multicultural Day in September.

I am so proud of Keene. I am in awe of Keene. I have known Keene for 25 years. Keene always seemed ebullient. Yesterday, it outdid itself. Yes, having a ‘youthful’ university, Keene State, in town helps, but it was more than that. Laconia, Gilford and Wolfeboro look and feel like ghost towns compared to Keene! What gives. I am formulating a theory that the towns on the western side of our State (Hanover another example) do better because of the influence from Vt. I wish Laconia, Gilford or Wolfeboro had the gumption to do something world class like this pumpkin festival. Alton has no chance. We can’t even get our semaphore painted!

We were at the festival from 11:20 am till 7:20 pm, bar 1 hour when we went to pay a surprise visit to our favorite dog breeder, Golden Retrievers, of course, in Surry, NH. Though ‘Deb’ didn’t know we were coming she graciously invited us to come and play with her latest batch; 3 weeks old and related to our 11 year old Ulysses.

3 week old puppies at ‘Red Fox Farm’ in Surry who are related to our 11 year old Golden, Ulysses.

All the above said, yesterday’s organization was not optimal. To be fair all the necessary logistics were not in place till around 2:30 pm, though the Festival officially opened at noon. At 2pm the main merchandizing tent still was unable to SELL their T-shirts, though they had been on display for an hour, for reasons that were never apparent. Yes, I had folks coming to me and complaining. The tickets for the Ferris Wheel etc. nor the necessary signs went up, much before 2pm. It was a small Ferris wheel. Line was huge. I heard that the wait times were over an hour. Yes, I heard folks bitching. The carving station wasn’t open on time. More folks moaned. So, it wasn’t perfect. It was actually a bit of a mess, BUT people still had a good time.

I never did see the $15 parking. We parked for free twice. Yes, you can park on the streets and walk. When we got back from Surry, at 5:30, we managed to park within 1/2 mile of the Festival WITHOUT any trouble. We walked. Took about 15 minutes.

Though the collection of donations was haphazard, somebody made a LOT of money yesterday. Yes, I can see that there are some expenses. The stands for the pumpkins, publicity, entertainment, the TOWER etc. etc. Hhhmmm.

But, definitely that we enjoyed, though Deanna was beyond mad about having to walk to-and-fro waiting for the carving station to finally open.

The weather. It was TOO HOT! Wow. Folks in shorts.

Lots of amazing costumes.

It was a GREAT DAY for Keene, NH
— with or without a world record.

Keene still WON, big.
