It was ‘OK’. Let’s just say (and I say this as a taxpayer) that Alton doesn’t believe in spending too much money on the ‘4th of July’ fireworks. The “Alton Old Home Day” fireworks, in August, tend to be better (but again we are not talking Weirs, Wolfeboro or Meredith, let alone Portland (Maine) or Boston (Massachusetts). [The ‘original’ Boston does not do July 4th fireworks.]

But fireworks are fireworks and I am a sucker for them. So we always go. It is always fun and that it was last night. Great weather (especially compared to last year when the 4th of July fireworks were on the 12th of July). Wasn’t packed but there was a respectable crowd. Parking wasn’t bad. We got there about 8:45, parked in our normal ‘area’ and walked down the hill. Watched the fireworks, as usual, from our spot on the bridge. I took about 275 pictures with the Fuji X-E2s and the whittled it down to 183.

Two things were different this year. As you can see from some of the pictures it wasn’t as dark (down the Bay as it normally is). We had a nice orange backdrop when the fireworks started. That was cool and sure made a difference to my pictures. The second change was the always much anticipated FINALE. They did not, as is customary, ‘paint the heavens’ and create ‘rolling thunder’. Instead, it was a mainly-white, low level ‘sparkler’ display. It was OK. Different. You can see it in the YouTube video.

I stitched together the 183 usable pictures I got, from the Fuji X-E2s, into a YouTube photomontage and set it (what else to) Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. The pictures are in chronological order. So you should get a good feel. Enjoy.

Mr. Selfridge, Season 4, Snuck Up On Us, With No Warning From PBS — Albeit To Our Delight.

by Anura Guruge

mrselfridge4svf

Click to access PBS homepage for “Mr. Selfridge” Season 4 with an embedded promo video.

Though we, as true devotees, watched all the 9 episodes of “Downton AbbeySeason 6 (alas, the final season) plus all of the other ‘milk-it’ shows that went before and after (e.g., the ‘BAFTA Awards‘ for the show) we did not see any trailers or promos for Season 4 (alas, also another final season) for ‘Mr. Selfridge‘. We only found out because our DISH DVR was programmed to record all new episodes of PBSMasterpiece Theater” and as such recorded Sunday’s episode, i.e., episode 1. I actually first thought that it was a rerun — having been convinced that Season 3 was the last.

We were wrong and we are delighted. We discovered “Mr. Selfridge” on Amazon Prime Video, serendipitously, after we had finished watching Seasons 1 to 5 of “Downton Abbey”, more or less nightly, on Prime. “Mr. Selfridge” was a great antidote for “Downton Abbey” withdrawal until we discovered, on British ‘Acorn’, the Australian “A Place To Call Home“. Teischan (then 9), who became quite the “Downton” expert, also knew “Mr. Selfridge” characters, storyline and plots very well. So we are all happy. I just checked that the other 8 episodes of Season 4 will be recorded. You can catch reruns of “Mr. Selfridge” Season 4 episode 1 on Saturday and Sunday and it is probably also on Roku. It is on Prime, albeit at $1.99 an episode.

Enjoy. We will. [I have been very familiar with the Oxford St. store since 1967 and for a few months in 1979 worked in an office just around the corner from the store.]

A Better Ending For The “Downton Abbey” Finale — Leave Us In Suspenders.

by Anura Guruge

carsonlaststatement

We, with great trepidation and a mounting sense of loss, watched the ‘Downton Abbey‘ Finale last night — having recorded it on Sunday.

It was good. Not as dramatic as I had expected. In the end a very British, kind of Victorian, possibly Jane Austenish, ending. Very positive. Upbeat and sentimental.

I gather (see below) that people expected more. Well I definitely would have introduced Michael Gregson back in that Finale. I kept on waiting for him to come and stop the wedding. And when that didn’t happen I would have closed out the SERIES with Carson announcing that Michael Gregson was at the door. Boom! Wouldn’t that have left everybody shocked.

Click to access PBS sneak preview video. Very high quality.

Just a heads up. Tonight, November 22, 2015, Episode 9 is the finale for Season 1 of ‘Indian Summers‘. Not sure whether a Season 2 is planned or funded.

Can’t say I will miss it much. Yes, we watched all 8 episodes so far, within 48 hours of them airing. It was OK. The chemistry was never right.

We all much preferred ‘Home Fires‘ which ended two Sundays ago. That we would like back.

Not sure what happened to ‘Indian Summers‘. You could detect the elements of ‘Passage to India‘ (e.g., court scene) and ‘Jewel in the Crown‘ (e.g., interracial love interests, Independence etc.) But the characterization was poor and I finally worked it out. The dialog was insipid.

So there will be no new Masterpiece shows on PBS in December 2015. It will be reruns. Then in January or February 2016 we kick of with the FINAL SEASON, season 6, of ‘Downton Abbey
