I read about this YESTERDAY and didn’t believe it. Thought it was a joke.

Today, I called up the ‘Ashworth By The Sea‘ Hotel and checked. It is kosher.

Fireworks cancelled!

Wolfeboro, N.H. cancelled theirs today.

Shame. I am bummed.

I think Portsmouth is still going ahead.

The fireworks, BOTH 6:30 & 8:30pm, were ‘just’ CANCELLED.

Bummer. I was checking whether it was 6pm or 6:30pm! Glad I checked.

Haven’t missed a Wolfeboro New Year’s Eve firework show in YEARS.

Shame.

There has been NO ‘First Night‘ in Wolfeboro on December 31, 2019.

There was NO ‘First Night’ in 2018, 2017 or 2016!

Instead there is a ‘Last Night’ that wraps up by 9pm.

I have always maintained that there is no such thing as a bad fireworks show. They are all good, by default and definition.

So, these fireworks, at the ungodly early hour of 6:30pm, were good. People liked them. They applauded and honked their horns. So, that alone was good.

It was sure cheerful and a nice prelude to the snowstorm that was on the way. As it transpires the timing kind of worked out. Per the weather forecasts it did start snowing sharp at 8pm.

Not that many people and Wolfeboro was rather quiet. No traffic, whatsoever.

To I, New Year’s Eve is not complete without fireworks. So, I am indeed glad that we went.

Happy New Year.

Wolfeboro, N.H.: No ‘First Night’ For 2019 (i.e., December 31, 2018) BUT There Is A ‘Last Night’.

by Anura Guruge

For 2019 – 2020 UPDATE, i.e., Dec. 31, 2019.

This was also the case last year and the year before.

No ‘First Night’, with a midnight fireworks, as there used to be — instead a ‘Last Night’ that wraps up by 9pm.

An early end will not be a bad thing in 2018 since we will be getting snow/ice/rain around that time.

I said that this was a possibility in my December 12, 2016, “No First Night” post.

Well, it has become a reality.

Shame it ends at 10pm — hence why it is ‘Last Night’ (2016) as opposed to ‘First Night’ 2017.

It is OFFICIAL. I called up and checked with the “Wolfeboro Area Chamber of Commerce“.

Wolfeboro First Night“, which was so much a part of the Lakes Region scene, for 20-years is NO MORE — and has NOT been since 2014. Shame. Pity.

Yes, there will be town-sponsored fireworks, on the ‘docks’, at 6:30pm (which is WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY too early)!

Some Town Officials are hoping to do ‘something’ in the “Great Hall” of the “Town Hall” building. Details to follow.

Last year the “Wolfeboro Inn” did a ‘gala’. Not so this year.

Shame. A pity. We used to love First Night at Wolfeboro. Will have to make other plans. {SMILE}.

I am glad to see that they have a Web presence this year and that the event is alive and ‘well’. We are big supporters of this event — the only other real ‘major’ “First Night” in New Hampshire being the bit more gala one in Portsmouth.

I know that management changed, for the first time in decades, last year and that this is still a ‘work in progress’ for the new crew. I also see that our own “Clearlakes Chorale” (for the first time that I am aware of) and our friend Dan Monahan’s “Lakes Region Chordsmen” have star-billing. That is great. Dan had already given me a heads up.

As an adopted Scot who takes Hogmanay very seriously (as one really should) I will just make this one observation. An event that ends by 10 pm on New Year’s Eve is not exactly “First Night” for the diehards and young at heart. Ideally I like fireworks (in the air and other varieties can come later) at Midnight. No Portsmouth does not have fireworks at midnight because of noise ordinances! Wolfeboro used to.

I wish them all the best. They will fine tune it and refine it with time.

Portsmouth 2014 ‘First Night’
— the latest

I was right.
Wolfeboro ‘First Night’ has NOTHING on the Web for 2014!

What they have is last year’s events and buttons.

That is official and confirmed.

I just called up the Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce.

wolfe1stcontact

They admitted that there will be a NEW ‘Website’ and with 8 days to go it is still NOT UP.

Why folks around here have trouble doing Websites confounds me.
I can do a new Website, from scratch, in a couple of hours
and have done 4 in the last 5 weeks to prove that.

The Chamber says that they have PRINTED stuff and that
they will be mailing it shortly.

How cute! How provincial.

But, main thing. Don’t be duped by the old Website.

Portsmouth 2014 ‘First Night’
Dec. 1, 2013.

It is official, it is true and it is as it should be.

There will be a ‘First Night‘ in Wolfeboro for 2014, i.e., December 31, 2013 …

Yes, it is true that their Website, their Facebook or that of the Wolfeboro Chamber doesn’t mention that. They are still carrying 2012 and 2011 content.

But, I have checked.

We probably, breaking our tradition of the last few years, will NOT be going this year. The kids are older. We can venture further afield!

IF I find more details, I sure will post them.

Happy New Year, Wolfeboro.
