Sri Lanka, To It Credit, Now Teaching Kids How To Deal With A Tsunami.

This is a great move and the Sri Lankan authorities should be commented.

It is not a case, in this instance, of ‘too little, too late‘. There was no precedent in living memory for the 2004 tsunami that devastated southwest Sri Lanka and claimed so many lives. You can’t be prepared for something that you never knew could happen.

But, now we know and they are taking action.

I have always maintained, since 2004, that SO MANY kids lost their lives in the tsunami because we are NOT accustomed to TIDES. Though it is an island in the middle of Indian Ocean, due to the shape of the Continental Ledge in that area, Sri Lanka has minimal — to negligible — tides. Around 6″, both in height and reach. You can’t detect that. So we grow up not knowing about tides. That was definitely the case with I. I would read about tides in the English books I devoured and ASSUMED (wrongly) that we didn’t have tides because we were by the equator,

So, prior to the tsunami coming in, the ocean went out. That was NEW to all. They had no experience of the ocean ebbing and froing. Yes, of course, they should have known/realized that something MAJOR was awry. But, we are not very smart either. So adults and kids went out on the beach and were picking up the fish that were getting left behind in the sand. Then the tsuami came in at great speed. Too late.

So this training is good.

For those of us in the U.S. SPOT the irony. In Sri Lanka they have tsunami drills at school. In the U.S. we have active shooter drills! Wow. I know what I would prefer.

Think – Today: How Long Did It Take To Build The Empire State Building?

by Anura Guruge

empireasdsadsadFrom groundbreaking to completion. Opening day will do too, if you prefer. So, how long? How long would it take today? Think about it.

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “How we see color” — Couple of things to factor in to appreciate how scientists were finally able to work out that it is the rods and cones in the retina of an eye that gives us, or any other animal, the ability to see color (as well as black and white). The first thing to remember is that concerted scientific research into the working of the eye had been going on for 150 years before they were finally able to make this vital breakthrough. Second, they used the eyes from a large variety of animals to help them figure out what was taking place. They actually discovered the ‘seeing’ properties of cones and rods when a Japanese neurophysiologist, in 1964, managed to insert an electronic sensor/probe into the cone of an eye from a fish! This article from the ‘Harvard Medical School‘ will explain it much better.

McDonald’s In The Vatican: Forget Pope Francis, What Would Jesus Say?

by Anura Guruge

I am sure that other cardinals and many of the other prelates will welcome having a McDonald’s handy — just off St. Peter’s Basilica.

I could see the Pope dropping by for a burger and milk shake. This would be great publicity for McD. I really should buy some shares. I used to be a shareholder a few years ago, but got impatient.

I am sure Jesus wouldn’t have a problem provided they make sure to have plenty of the Fish Fillets on Friday.
