As I pointed out about 3-weeks ago, the Fitbit Ionic was overdue — way overdue — an update. The last update, which was not well received by the community, was on March 14, 2018. So, that was close to 2-months ago, when most people have got accustomed to monthly updates.

I do not wear a Fitbit Ionic any longer and that is a relief. But, given that my 12-year old has it, I kind of still own one — especially when she despairs and just gives it to me and says “I can’t get this update to load“. That is what happened this morning. To be fair to Fitbit, as I always am, this was ‘user error’. We have 3 Wi-Fi networks in the house and the Ionic and her phone were on different networks! I had to rectify that and restart both. After that it was a piece of cake, BUT a slow piece of cake. That you can’t update over USB is crazy.

Once I gave it back to her she encountered the ‘Calibration‘ message for the first time. But, she didn’t have problems with it. Worked and worked fast — the very first time.

She has been running the new firmware for about 9-hours and has not encountered any problems.

I will keep you posted.

As is now invariably the case the ‘natives’ are not happy. That Fitbit will not publish the bugs fixed, quite rightly, infuriates many! I am now sanguine since I do NOT have to deal with Fitbit directly. I have said it before, and I will say it again, the Fitbit is a PERFECT watch for an undemanding 12-year old  (at least undemanding when it comes to activity trackers).

I had seen that this was on the way, and early this morning (i.e., just after midnight) I got a notification on my FitBit APP (on my Google Pixel 2) that there was a Software Update pending.

It took me 3 tries to get it to start downloading on to the Ionic.

It refused to do it over Wi-Fi and insisted on doing it over Bluetooth. Once it started it took about 20 minutes. The APP was way-out of ‘sync’ with the watch. It still kept on saying ‘downloading’ … ‘installing’ etc. when the Ionic was way past that point … restarted and ready to go.

I have NOT encountered any problems as yet.

Syncs OK, across Wi-Fi.

My day off from running. So, do not know whether the GPS inaccuracies have been fixed.

As usual I have noticed, on the Fitbit Ionic forum, that others are having problems with this firmware update also. I think I have lucked out because my Google Pixel 2 has the latest and greatest Android software that money can get.

I will keep you posted.

Fitbit Android APP Is Now At Version 2.67 — Mine Just Updated Today.

Wow. 5 updates in 48-days! That is just CRAZY. An update every 10 days.

Come on!

That is bad. That is pathetic. Fitbit OBVIOUSLY is not testing this software. Just throwing it over the fence. No wonder so many of YOU are having so many problems.

We should take a stand.

This is crazy. That is LOT of BUGS they are fixing.

Fitbit Android APP Just Updated To Version 2.66 — Is This To Fix Latest Sync Issues?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. From “Google Play” APP store. Where else?

Around 8:15 pm (Eastern USA) on Sunday, February 25, 2018.

My Google Pixel 2 phone had a notification that said one update available. It was Fitbit. So, obviously, Fitbit, like most other Android APPs, does not auto-update. That is probably good.

I had nothing to lose. So, I updated.

Can’t see any differences, BUT then again, unlike many, I did not run into the sync issue after updating my Fitbit Ionic firmware to version 27.31.1.29 (i.e., Fitbit OS 1.2). I suspect that that was because of my Pixel 2 — which has the ‘latest’ hardware and Android software.

But, a heads up. Check it out. This might help you.

Fitbit Ionic — Need To Use ‘Fitbit.com’ Rather Than Mobile APP For All The Data!

by Anura Guruge

On an Android mobile. Does NOT give me an ELEVATION graph.

With ‘fitbit.com’ — logged into MY Fitbit account.

I did my first GPS-enabled run with the Fitbit Ionic that I got on Friday, February 2, 2018.

When I completed the run, it gave me a whole slew of data, right on the watch — more than I used to see with my Garmin Vivocative 3. 464′ of elevation was one of them — and I was GLAD. Tracking elevation is a MUST for I because elevation, and carrying 11 pounds of extra weight, is a feature of my runs.

But, when I checked the Fitbit APP on my Google Pixel 2 and 10″ ASUS Zenpad NO ELEVATION. Neither could I get to it on the watch. I was bummed. Then, much later on in the evening I invoked “fitbit.com” — because I was going to do a search on ‘elevation’. Saw that the dashboard was well populated now that I had been wearing the Ionic for a few days. Clicked on the ‘Exercise‘ tile and BINGO the elevation graph. I was so happy.

But seems DAFT that the APP does not display it. Of course, you can call up fitbit.com on you mobile.

Continues to confirm that Fitbit is no Garmin. The APP is very feature poor.
