Another Half A MILLION Step Month — 1.53 Million Steps In The Last 3-Months.

Best month so far. 524,416-steps in July. Prior best, May 2020, was 505,552. So, I am chuffed. Yes, I set out to make sure that this will be a 500,000-step month. It having 31-days helps, though this month, unlike May, I did the 500K steps by the 30th. The 31st was just a bonus. SMILE.

What can I say. It is ONE of the things I do. I WALK.

I KNOW that there are those that walk more than this, BUT, I am HAPPY.

Yes, I could easily walk more, the problem is that of TIME — my eternal nemesis. I now spend around 2.25 hours a day walking. That is a BIG chunk of time for I. SMILE.

I did NOT set out to walk ~500,000 steps a day.

I just changed ONE metric in my life. For 30-years I had followed this ‘3-days ON, 1-day OFF‘ paradigm. One day of rest, after each 3 days of exercise to let muscles recover. BUT, that was when I used to run — as opposed to walk. I don’t stress my muscles & body as much now. I still run — but not daily, and never too far. Yes, I am still ‘babying’ my knee after my quad tendon surgery last year. SMILE.

On my days off I walked less than 10K steps — INTENTIONALLY.

Then on April 17, 2020, I stopped doing that. I decided to TRY & hit 10K every day — though aiming for less than 16K steps on my days off.

And this is the result. I am happy.

Am I fit. I think I am OK for somebody who will be 67 in 2-months.

My VO2 Max is 42 & per Garmin my fitness age … Well, this picture says it all.

Am I happy & content. Hhhhhm.

I would like to lose another 10 pounds & get my VO2 Max. up. But, beggars can’t be choosers.

I do NOT DELUDE myself. All of this means NOTHING. I can have a stroke or a heart-attack TODAY. SMILE. I am not totally stupid — just partially. SMILE.

But, I like walking. I take pictures while I walk. I, quite literally, smell the roses. I think. I am happy.

Thanks. Cheers. SMILE.

I Am Sure Garmin Already Has Something Close To The ‘Active Zone Minutes’ Feature In The New Fitbit ‘Charge 4’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. From ‘theverge.com’.

Yes, yes, yes, it is a $149 Fitbit band and NOT a $300 – $800 Garmin Vivoactive, Forerunner or Fenix 6. I appreciate that.

So, Fitbit has added GPS and a VO2 max capability. Those of us who have mid- to high-end Garmin’s take that for granted.

The new feature being promoted with the new Fitbit Charge 4 is this ‘Active Zone Minutes‘.

From what I see this looks pretty similar to, if not the same as, ‘Intensity Minutes‘ on the Garmin.

OK, I will admit & confess. It is not a feature I bother with. At 67 I am more than happy with my fitness. SMILE. So, I have never looked at that. But, I just checked the menu to see what it was called. If it is not the same, Garmin will be able to tweak it, in the next software rollouts, to match Fitbit or even go beyond.

So, I am not sure that this Fitbit is of any interest to us with Garmins. [Yes, my wife wears a Fitbit Versa 2 and loves it. I realized about a year ago that I am a Garmin man and that I shouldn’t bother even looking at Fitbits.]

What It Takes To Average 29,500 STEPS In A Week.

by Anura Guruge

This Is NOT I!

A friend.
Huge Garmin fan & fitness fanatic.

He has a Garmin Forerunner 945.

He sent this to my last night. He is on vacation — on an island off North Carolina. He obviously is doing a LOT of walking.

What got me was the ‘Average Daily’ — 29,542 steps. WOW.

The most steps I have walked in a day, in the last few years, is 26,000.

He walked 42,000 steps yesterday.

I average less than HALF this: 13,300 steps.

He is quite a bit younger than me and, obviously, willing to spend more hours a day on fitness. Good for him.

Thanks to him I have INCREASED my morning walk to 4+ miles a day. So, that is progress.

Bulova GRAMMY Edition Watches A Tad Too ‘Clunky’ For My Taste — I Still Prefer The Timeless CURV.

by Anura Guruge

Click picture to ENLARGE.

I still get an occasional e-mail from Bulova because I once considered getting a CURV to replace my 26-old Rolex I gave to my son.

But, that was before I got the Fitness Tracker bug and strapped a Garmin (Vivoactive HR then and now a Vivoactive 3) to my wrist — last June. Now the only fancy watch I will consider is the Samsung S3 Frontier that I did treat myself to at Christmas.

Bulova does makes nice watches and they are GOOD VALUE for money.

With GRAMMY Edition they are, of course, trying to make a statement — and if you like bold, brassy watches then one of these will work great for you. Just not my cup of tea.

I Wore My Samsung S3 Frontier For The First Time Yesterday.

by Anura Guruge

This was a kind of combined delayed birthday/Christmas present along with the Google Pixel 2 phone.

After the trouble I have had with my Garmin Vivoactive 3, I did not want to again be without an Activity Tracker on my wrist. Plus, the Samsung S3 Frontier really does double-up as a pretty decent dress watch. And that was how I used to it … when we went to Concord, NH, among other things to see the movie “The Greatest Showman“.

The Samsung S3 Frontier looks good. Wasn’t that heavy. I love the display. Great in a theater. Easy to read in the dark. I loved it.

It is not as comprehensive on the activity/fitness features as is my Vivoactive 3 — and it is NOT meant to be. Heart Rate monitoring is not constant — but more on demand. But, when I go out I would rather the have the S3 Frontier on my wrist than the Garmin.

I have found an APP that will let me combine the daily data from both. I have yet to try it.

I will keep you posted.

I Relinquished My Garmin Vivoactive HR After 117-Days — Awaiting Availability Of Vivoactive 3 (Slate).

by Anura Guruge

Vivoactive 3 status at Best Buy as of Tuesday, October 10, 2017.

15-days ago I decided that I was going to upgrade from my Vivoactive HR, which I had not taken off my left wrist since June 14, 2017, for the newly announced Vivoactive 3. I had planned to trade-in or sell the Vivoactive HR ONCE I got the Vivoactive 3.

Well, as they say about the best laid plans of mice and men …

I relinquished my Vivoactive HR last night THOUGH I am unlikely to be able to get my hands on a Vivoactive 3 for at least another 2 weeks! That, however, is not the end of the world.

Devanee wanted a Activity Tracker for her birthday — which is today. She was looking at the Vivosmarts and Vivofits. So, I said she can have mine … So, that is the story.

I rest the HR and detached it from my Garmin Apps.

Appears I did 574.4 miles during the 117-days I had it. But, that coincided with the Summer and many a hike in Acadia and Monhegan Island. It is not going to be that good over the winter.

I am OK about not having an activity tracker for 2-weeks or more. I now know the distances I have to run and the various cadences I have to maintain.

I have only one regret. I want to see my activity over a 1-year period — uninterrupted. That could have been June 13, 2018. Now it will have to be … like October 23, 2018. C’est la vie.

Garmin Vivoactive 3 In ‘Slate’ (a.k.a. ‘Gun-Metal’) Will Be Available October 20, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

A good video.
Worth watching IF you are considering a Garmin Vivoactive 3.

The stainless-steel nor the white appeals. As some of you know, I, having worn a diamond-studded Rolex for 30-years, am fond of nice looking watches. Wearing the Vivoactive HR has been rather ‘different’ at times.

That was ANOTHER motivating factor to consider upgrading to the Vivoactive 3. With a leather or metal mesh strap it could look halfway dressy WHEN I am dressed up.

So, I want the slate model.

Got it from an insider at Garmin itself today. Shipments of the slate model are slated for October 20, 2017. I had heard that on the rumor mill too.

The white model is already available at Best Buy — BUT not at Amazon.

I might have to buy the slate model directly from Garmin.

What I am going to do with the Vivoactive HR is SOLVED. Devanee is going to take it!

Garmin Vivoactive 3 Owner’s Manual Now Available.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to download Owner’s Manual, as a PDF, from the Garmin site.

Garmin has yet to announce the availability date for the new Vivoactive 3. The expectation is that it will be in mid-October, i.e., a few weeks from now.

I plan to pre-order it from Amazon. Nothing to lose. Amazon will NOT charge me (or you) till it is shipped. Just means that I (or you) will get it more or less as soon as it starts shipping.

In the meantime the Owner’s Manual is available — as a PDF.

I have downloaded it, already. {Smile}

So can you.

I Will Upgrade To A Garmin Vivoactive 3, From the Vivoactive HR, When It Starts Shipping.

The better heart-rate & ‘fitness’ monitoring is ideal for my needs.

The new features that appeal to my needs.

Click to ENLARGE. Culled from Garmin.

Click to access. The best review I have found — so far.

As I pointed out in this post from just 2-days ago, the Garmin Vivoactive HR, which I bought on June 14, 2017, has CHANGED MY LIFE — for the better. I have not taken it off my wrist, from day 1, and I never thought I could go through life wearing anything on my wrist. I use it all the time and even keep my 10″ Android tablet close to my desk to make sure I have a connection!

Though it has NOT helped me lose any weight it sure has made me exercise MORE. I run further (33%), wearing more weights (83%) and do it FASTER. The later is the most amazing thing. Having ‘pace’ staring at you, as you run, just forces you to stretch your stride.

I check my heartrate …

The Vivoactive 3 has a BETTER (i.e., near constant monitoring) heartrate monitor. I would have upgraded just for that. But, it gets better. It has ‘fitness monitoring’ feature as well as one for ‘stress level’.

Plus it looks SLIGHTLY nicer than the Vivoactive HR. Wearing the Vivoactive HR is a bit strange for somebody who wore a diamond-studded Rolex for 26-years and has a collection of fancy looking watches.

I got the Vivoactive HR basically for FREE — using Best Buy reward points I earned when he bought (the accursed) Samsung Refrigerator. I will ‘trade it’ in for the Vivoactive 3. (But that is another post. {Smile})

I will keep you posted. Oh, I will get the black with the gunmetal bezel.
