‘Samsung Watch 3’ Group On Facebook — Go Ahead & Join.

by Anura Guruge

Given the number of ‘Garmin‘ groups on Facebook — & I belong to many of them — I was surprised that there was NONE for the ‘Samsung Watch 3‘ which was announced yesterday.

The ‘Samsung Watch 3‘ has potential. NO, I haven’t got one yet. SMILE. But, I probably will in a few weeks after I double-, triple-check the reviews.

Many features that appeal to I. EKG & AMOLED display for a start.

I will, of course, keep you posted. IF you are interested PLEASE joint the group. It is FREE (for now). SMILE.

The New ‘Garmin Forums’ Are Here — Old Links Will Not Work.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the NEW Landing Page for Garmin Forums.

If you follow the ‘Garmin Forums‘ you would have known that they have been DOWN for about a ‘week’ while they were being moved to a new — and supposedly better — platform.

They are up and running again.

However, only the TOP LEVEL ‘forums.garmin.com‘ URL is the same. So, if you had links to specific Forums, say the Fenix 5 Plus (as I did), they will NOT work. You will have to redo them — as I had to.

The Categories are a bit confusing. Why isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) under ‘Sports & Fitness’ — isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) Garmin’s premier sports watch?

Anywho … they are BACK.

I didn’t have time today to check them out. Just wanted to make sure they are back.

Hope this helps.

Nikon’s Detailed Brochure For The Z6/Z7 Is Worth Studying — Download It Here.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to download Nikon’s original brochure in (safe) PDF form. It is 16MB.

Click to ENLARGE. Useful MINI tutorials.

Click to ENLARGE. More examples of all the built-on ‘Creative Controls’. I like the ‘red’ and might use it.

I noticed that folks on the ‘DPReview.com‘Nikon Z’ forum mentioned this brochure often (– justifiably as I now appreciate).

So, this morning I went looking for it. Got it from the Nikon Website. But, you can download a copy directly from here. That way you can buy yourself a few seconds and dive straight in.

I need to study it further — but I will have plenty of time. I do NOT plan to get my Nikon Z6 till after Christmas. I want all the holiday craziness to be over and for Nikon to have got rid of its first batch. I can wait. The Sony a7 II is still doing good.

I will keep you posted.

Another Disturbing Post Of ‘B&H’ Supposedly Selling A Used Sony As New.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read this April 9, 2017
thread on “DPReview” Forums.

Such posts, which appear on a regular basis, always distress me.

Appears it is a widespread practice in the U.S. — and this is why the likes of Sony don’t put seals on new cameras!

I am sure that over the last 3 years I have ended up getting a used cameras as new.

This is my continuing nightmare.

Which is why of late I try to buy only from Amazon who claim to eschew this practice though there are those that claim Amazon is as guilty as others.

Just a heads up.

This appears to be a widespread problem. So be aware, very aware.

Camera Manufacturers, Like Sony, Helping Retailers Sell Used Cameras As New.

This thorny but waxing issue continues to linger and persists.

Yes, it is a problem for all sides. People, including I, return cameras. Retailers and manufacturers do NOT want to lose too much money on returned cameras.

But, there has to be a better, more equitable solution.

Fuji cameras, at least when I bought my Fuji X-E2s, in May 2016, came inside a sealed bag.

But, as can be seen from the Forum posts folks still have concerns.

Sony, for a fact, do not provide ANY seals on their cameras or lenses.

This, of course, is to HELP the resellers.

At a minimum all cameras, above say $450, should come sealed, in a sealed bag inside a sealed box.

There should also be a (hard to reset) shutter actuation count that can be displayed.

Otherwise we will continue to have this problem.

The supposedly new Sony a6000, I got from Amazon, albeit from ‘Cardinal Photo‘, had a shutter actuation of 19. And I will admit that that is a strange, hard to reconcile number.

I am dreading getting the Sony a6500. What will I see in terms of shutter actuations.

Possible Intermittent Power On Problem With Sony a65000 — Best To Keep In On ‘Airplane Mode’.

by Anura Guruge

a6500poweron

Click image to access the ‘DPReview’ Forum thread for this potential problem.

More than one person has reported this.

It could be fixed with Firmware but we are unlikely to see a Firmware update for a few months.

Keeping it in ‘Airplane Mode’ seems to be a temporary bypass. Not a problem for I. I don’t believe in using Wi-Fi on cameras. So, whenever I can, I have my cameras on this mode.

Would Be A Shame To Use A UV Filter In Front Of The New Nikon’s 1″ DL Camera Lenses, e.g., DL18-50.

by Anura Guruge

One of the many highlights of these three new 1″ sensor Nikon Premium Compacts is the high-tech Fluorine coating used on the lenses of all three cameras. Per Nikon (and see below) this Fluorine coating actively repels dust, water, grease and more. That sound good. Very good.

The DL18-50 lens, in addition, is said to have a special ‘Nano Crystal Coat‘ that eliminates distortion, ghosting, aberrations & internal reflections.

It is the dust, water and grease (as in fingerprint) repelling of the Fluorine coating that interests (and concerns) me the most.

In an effort to safeguard the surface of my (expensive) lenses and because I have been doing it for so long, I, as soon as I get a new lens (whether attached to a camera or interchangeable), immediately slap on a good quality, typically B+W, UV lens on front of it. And doing that will continue to protect the lens on a new Nikon DL camera.

But here is the irony and rub. Even a good multi-coated filter (such as a B+W) will not have the equivalent of the Fluorine coating of the lens behind it. So the filter will be prone to dust etc.

Plus there is a school of thought that is adamant that UV filters should under no circumstances be used with modern digital cameras — since they will interfere and interact with all the built-in, integrated filters built into the sensor!

So it would appear that it would be best to avoid putting a UV filter in front of the new Nikon Premium Compacts — and from what I can see Nikon, nor anyone else, appears to make a  Fluorine coated UV filter. But even if they did, the don’t use UV with modern digitals would override that.

This is the “Head to Head Fuji X-T2 vs Nikon D810
YouTube video I am talking about.

Worth Watching.

The replies to my post are worth reading. Very elucidating. While I do not shoot too many fast moving objects I do NOT want to feel that my EXPENSIVE camera is not good at doing so. I do not want to get this wrong. I am determined that if I get the Fuji X-T2 I will not regret it! So I am going to take my time and do all the research until I have it all straight in my mind.

Hope it helps.
