The New ‘Garmin Forums’ Are Here — Old Links Will Not Work.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the NEW Landing Page for Garmin Forums.

If you follow the ‘Garmin Forums‘ you would have known that they have been DOWN for about a ‘week’ while they were being moved to a new — and supposedly better — platform.

They are up and running again.

However, only the TOP LEVEL ‘forums.garmin.com‘ URL is the same. So, if you had links to specific Forums, say the Fenix 5 Plus (as I did), they will NOT work. You will have to redo them — as I had to.

The Categories are a bit confusing. Why isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) under ‘Sports & Fitness’ — isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) Garmin’s premier sports watch?

Anywho … they are BACK.

I didn’t have time today to check them out. Just wanted to make sure they are back.

Hope this helps.

That was pretty quick, but Garmin makes sure that these Forums are quickly in place.

Here is the direct link.

I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts, but the ones I read were encouraging.

Canon EOS M5 Gets Better Than Expected Review At DPReview — But Rated Below Sony a6500.

Nothing that overly surprised me in this — but then again I spend an inordinate amount of time reading about these cameras. {SMILE}

That it was rated below the Sony a6500 is fair and what I would have expected — given that I, few months ago, decided to get a Sony a6500 over the Canon M5, because just in terms of the raw specs, the a6500 was a more powerful, capable camera.

Some in the DPReview Forums have alluded that maybe this was a ‘generous’, ‘kind’ review — probably given that this is indeed THE holidays. That could be. But, I don’t think there is anything majorly to quarrel about on this review — one way or another.

The New Pentax K-70 Is Not A Fuji X-T2 But It Is A Temptation.

by Anura Guruge

pentaxk70newcamera

The ‘New Camera’ that I read religiously every morning and every night has been promoting the Pentax K-70 for the last few days. It not for their incessant coverage I might have missed it altogether given that I am trying hard to be ‘ALL Fuji’. The “New Camera” Website is at: thenewcamera.com. Click to ENLARGE image and read here.

Oscar Wilde and I are one when it comes to this sentiment: “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it… I can resist everything but temptation.” Temptation has been the greatest source of pleasure as well as the bane of my life — though I have always maintained, very truthfully, that I only succumbed, at best, to 10% of the temptation that came my way. When I was young, which (alas) was a long time ago, my temptations were mainly carnal. In my old age, having forgone my love of photography for 30 years because I was too busy with my career, the only temptations that stir me tend to be cameras! I am NOT sure whether I should be happy or sad about that — though I do realize that lusting after cameras, irrespective of how expensive they are, is still cheaper for me that lusting our my old temptations.

So, that is how the Pentax K-70 came into my life, with a resounding bang, yesterday.

A year ago I was convinced that the Pentax K-3 was going to be, as of September 2015, my MAIN camera. Well a lot of water and cameras have flown ‘under that bridge’, so to speak, in the last 9 months: Sony a77 II, Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, Sony RX100 II, Panasonic Lumix LX100 etc. etc. SMILE. Temptation. For I this is NOTHING!

These days, next to the U.K. “Daily Mail“, which I read, ‘cover-to-cover’, every morning (as I did when I lived in the U.K.), the only other publication that I do not miss is the “new camera“. They, over the last 3 days, have been shamelessly plugging the Pentax K-70. Eventually I took some notice.

WOW!

The Pentax K-70 really could be the camera for me!

Did I just say that. Isn’t the Fuji X-T2 THE DREAM CAMERA build to my exact specs?

As you might know I take a lot of pictures, every day — most of them outdoors. The ideal camera for me would be a very rugged one, WEATHER SEALED and able to work in New Hampshire’s below freezing winters.

The K-70 is for all-weather outdoor use, up to 14°F (10°C) in cold climes. That is still 9°F outside MY range of operation in that I will run in 5°F weather.

I will HAVE to monitor the K-70. There are claims that it’s auto-focus (AF) is very good and it’s image quality is exceptional. And then there is the ISO above 51,210. That I would like! So stay TUNED.

I might still surprise myself. As I saw in a forum, the K-70 could be as good as the Fuji X-T2 at 1/3rd the price! Yikes.

Fuji ‘X’ June 9 Firmware Updates — First Real Problem, 50-140 Lens.

by Anura Guruge

This looks bad. Kind of had the feeling that any problems would show up in ‘less used’ products, particularly lenses, and that seems to be the case here.

Scary. You feel so helpless. When this happens you are ‘DEAD IN THE WATER’.

Poster is now reflecting that MAYBE he should have waited ‘for the dust to settle’. I already decided to wait till Monday (rather than Sunday). SMILE.

As an ol’ programmer I consider this atrocious programming. Rather than displaying ‘Firmware Broken‘ at least have the decency to ROLL BACK the update, get the lens to a semi-operable state and say “Update failed. Reinstall previous Firmware Version’. But I, for 40 years, have NEVER considered the Japanese to be very good programmers! Think about it. What has Japan done on the SOFTWARE front? Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter … List goes on. Good with hardware.

Fuji June 9, 2016 X-Series Firmware Updates — No Real Issues 1st 24 Hours.

by Anura Guruge

>> >>  1st real issue surfaces on a lens update  << <<

As promised in the first post about this HUGE X-series firmware update I am monitoring forums and online news for reports of problems.

So far, viz. mid-night June 10, 2016, all seems well. Just two ‘problem’ posts and both seem, to some extent, ‘user error’. But still early days. I will continue to monitor. There is another thread, with a lot of posts, where people have successfully updated, but from what I can see none of them have had time to put the camera/lenses through their paces.

Waiting 72-Hours Before I Apply Fuji June 9, 2016 Firmware To X-E2s & Lenses.

by Anura Guruge

fujijune9fwupdates

Click image to access COMPLETE table of all Fujifilm bodies and lenses with the LATEST Firmware dates and all the June 9, 2016 UPDATES — directly from fujifilm.com

There are updates to EVERYTHING I own from Fuji — the X-E2s body and all three lenses! And they are ALL to enhance manual focus accuracy a FLAW I had noticed ‘day 1’ three weeks ago.

I updated the Fuji X-E2s firmware from the original 1.0 to 1.01 the day I got it. So I kind of know the drill.

Fuji has had problems with prior FW updates. So I am going to let other braver, more intrepid owners checkout the updates first. I am already in monitor-mode on the Web and on forums. People have already updated. BUT, I will wait 72-hours. I am very cautious about ANY software update. I do not do my Windows updates for weeks if not months!

I will, of course, keep you posted.
