My Storied Camera Saga — 13 Camera In 4.5 Years.

The good or bad news is that I have plateaued. I am not going through cameras at a fast rate anymore. Plus, following the acquisition of my Google Pixel 2 for Christmas 2017 I no longer feel the need to have two cameras — a big one and a compact. The Google Pixel is my 2nd camera. So, just need one full-frame camera at any one time.

I kept my Sony a7 II for 690-days and took 30,455 pictures with it. I also kept the mega-zoom Nikon P900 around for long time but did not use it much after the first 9 months or so. The zoom was nice but I had become fond of BIG sensors.

Getting to know my new, 3-week old, Canon EOS RP. Need a couple more lenses. Plan is to keep it for at least a year, if not more. It seems pretty capable. Goal is to hang onto the lenses. That is why I went (bcak) to Canon.

10,000th Picture With My Full-Frame Sony a7 II.

I got my full-frame Sony a7 II, from Cameta Camera, on May 10, 2017.

So it has taken me 98-days to take 10,000 pictures. That comes to an average of 102 pictures a day. That is NOT bad.

I did, however, reach the 10,000 mark on my Fuji X-E2s camera, last August, in 76-days! So that was 22-days quicker.

One BIG difference. The Fuji was the only camera I had during that period.

I now have 3 cameras — one of them a brand new Sony a6500.

I have to say that I am extremely impressed and happy with my Sony a7 II. It is one heck of a camera. Best camera I have had … possibly ever!

Sony Came To Be This Day 71-Years Ago, In Japan — On May 7, 1946.

Well, well, well.

I had no idea how old Sony was — or where the name came from. Now, thanks to Wikipedia, I know. “Sonny Boy” — and I can see how they came up with “Walkman” from there.

Over the years I have had lots of Sony products — going back to Betamax. Yes, I was a big adherent of Betamax.

And now Sony cameras. Had three already and the plan is to get two more within the month! And the scary thing is that I am not that sure I like Sony cameras!

But, I have little choice. I am COMMITTED to mirrorless and don’t want to go below APS-C. Yes, Fuji was an option BUT I despaired of Fuji’s lousy autofocus capabilities.

So, it has to be Sony and I have to learn to live with Sony!

Fuji Getting Desperate Enough To Offer Topless Model To Launch Its Latest Camera!

by Anura Guruge

I saw it on the ‘DPReview’ forums which I check multiple times a day to see what is new. Click image to access the relevant forum.

This is the U.K. ‘Metro’ article they reference — which does have a picture of the topless model. Click image to access original.

Does seem a bit strange and inappropriate — though, of course, taking topless pictures are part of what many photographers do.

You somehow want to think that Fuji could have done better than this. If nothing else it seems to LACK imagination. Like the first idea thrown up at the first planning meeting.

Just wanted to share.

I have no qualms about topless women or pictures of topless women. Just find it rather strange for a Japanese company to think that offering topless models is a way to promote their latest camera.

Fuji With Its Unprecedentedly Large, 27-Item 2.0 Firmware Update To X-T2 & X-Pro2 Continues To Fine Tune Auto Focus (AF).

by Anura Guruge

Extracted from the Fuji press release for Firmware update 2.0. Click to ENLARGE and read here,

In July 2016 I decided that the Fuji X-T2, which I had thought was going to be my dream camera, was not so because I was getting increasingly disillusioned with Fuji’s AF prowess.

Reviews of the X-T2 vindicated my decision.

And now this 2.0 Firmware update.

While I am glad that Fuji, true to its reputation, continues to improve features of its cameras, this shows that there is still a lot that needs tweaking in the X-T2 when it comes to AF.

I do miss the brilliant JPEG color I could get from a Fuji. But, AF woes really got me down.

Hence my new found fondness for Sony.

Looks Highly Unlikely That The Sony a7 III To Be Announced This Weekend.

by Anura Guruge

No chatter at all, at all.

So, we have to start thinking end of March or maybe even mid-April.

My druthers insist that a new a7 announcement has to be imminent. But, I could be wrong.

Just keep YOU posted, as promised.

IF Sony a7 III To Be Announced Within Week — Lack Of Rumors/Chatter Seems V. Strange.

by Anura Guruge

There has been a muted expectation that
the Sony a7 III might be announced at the
March 18 – 21, 2017,
The Photography Show“, in the U.K.

was discussed in this post.

IF this is to be the case you would have thought that there would have been much more ‘chatter’ by now.

With the Fuji X-T2 and the Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII, last year, there were tons of ‘leaks’ at this stage, i.e., a week ahead of supposed announcement.

Are we in for a disappointment?

Is Sony this good at keeping announcements under wraps?

Don’t they need to invite press to the event etc.?

Just seems strange.

Hope I am wrong and that we do see the a7 III unveiled this weekend.

Fingers crossed.

New Cameras Announced So Far In 2017 By The Major Players — None By Nikon Or Sony!

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Just happened to notice that Nikon hadn’t announced anything, so far, in 2017 — mainly because I was wondering whether it has been a year since the premature announcement of the ill-fated 1″-sensor DL range. They were announced on February 23, 2016. So it is not a year as yet.

Noting from Sony either. By this time last year they had announced the groundbreaking Sony a6300.

So this is the state of play. Just thought I would share. Enjoy and cogitate.

Camera Manufacturers, Like Sony, Helping Retailers Sell Used Cameras As New.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read this December 18, 2016
thread on “DPReview” Forums.

Click to ENLARGE and read this post here. Use link above to go to Forum thread, with two posts by I, under my name, AnuraGuruge.

This thorny but waxing issue continues to linger and persists.

Yes, it is a problem for all sides. People, including I, return cameras. Retailers and manufacturers do NOT want to lose too much money on returned cameras.

But, there has to be a better, more equitable solution.

Fuji cameras, at least when I bought my Fuji X-E2s, in May 2016, came inside a sealed bag.

But, as can be seen from the Forum posts folks still have concerns.

Sony, for a fact, do not provide ANY seals on their cameras or lenses.

This, of course, is to HELP the resellers.

At a minimum all cameras, above say $450, should come sealed, in a sealed bag inside a sealed box.

There should also be a (hard to reset) shutter actuation count that can be displayed.

Otherwise we will continue to have this problem.

The supposedly new Sony a6000, I got from Amazon, albeit from ‘Cardinal Photo‘, had a shutter actuation of 19. And I will admit that that is a strange, hard to reconcile number.

I am dreading getting the Sony a6500. What will I see in terms of shutter actuations.

Will Japan’s Latest Earthquake (Nov. 20) Again Affect Camera Shipments By Sony, Canon, Nikon etc.?

by Anura Guruge

Latest November 20, 2016 earthquake (and Tsunami).

Click to access original Reuters coverage.

Impact of the April 2016 earthquake.

Click to access “Digital Trends” original.

There has been no reports of any crippling damages as yet.

So all could be fine. But even a couple of days worth of delays at the Japanese end could affect Christmas availability.

I will keep an eye and let you know. This is just a heads up.
