Is Ex-Pope Benedict Entitled To A Full Papal Funeral?

by Anura Guruge

Click to access MSN original. Google for more.

I do NOT know. We are in uncharted territory. The previous pope to resign, i.e., Gregory XII, genuinely retired & went into obscurity OUTSIDE of Rome. He did NOT get a papal funeral — & from what I can see, even one due a cardinal.

I do NOT think the ex-pope is entitled to a full papal funeral.

For the very simple reason that he was NOT a pope when he died. He, by choice, was an EX-POPE.

Yes, he will be buried in St. Peter’s at the Vatican (I am sure (unless he has managed to fanagle it so that he can be buried in Germany)). I have no problem with that. As one who had been pope he is entitled to be buried in St. Peter’s.

But, to afford him a FULL papal funeral, with the 9-days of formal mourning — i.e., novendiales — would be wrong. He is an EX-pope, an the ex- was NOT because he died.

Francis already has enough trouble from this ex-pope. Affording him a full papal funeral will just exacerbate matters.

That is what I think? What do YOU think?

Videos Of ‘Blue Angels’ Missing-Man Fly By At John McCain’s Funeral!

by Anura Guruge

‘Missing Man’ fly by is always special — evocative and cool.

I heard they were going to do one for John McCain and I wanted to see it. I knew I could find at least one video on YouTube. I found these three on YouTube and wanted to share with you.

Wow. I checked the ‘Blue Angels’ Website. They have issues. It is way out-of-date. Not what I expected.

Just As I Feared Callous Donald J. Trump Played Golf During John McCain’s Funeral!

Make America Decent AGAIN!

I was hoping against hope that he would NOT do it. He would have some sense and some decorum. Alas NO.

What a shame.

It makes him look even worse than he is — and that takes some doing.

Just Have A Hunch That Donald J. Trump Will Be Out Golfing During John McCain’s Funeral.

by Anura Guruge

I HOPE I am wrong. But, I just have this hunch. It is a long, holiday-weekend. Trump will hit the links.

I can’t find where he will be spending the weekend. I doubt whether it is the White House and even if it is, he goes out to his golf clubs in Virginia.

The only thing that can save us is rain, but we don’t want it to rain on John McCain’s parade. [I gather it rained quite hard when his body was being taken to the Capitol on Friday.]

This is NOT going to look good!

I HOPE I don’t have to remind you that he did GOLF during dear Barbara Bush’s funeral! That was idiotic.

In the words of Br. César J. Tobón:

“I also want to share with you that this Saturday I acolited the funeral Mass of Colombian Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos. At the end of the rite I had the opportunity to greet Pope Francis and assure him of my prayers for his ministry. While the pope sprinkled the coffin with holy water, I became aware that it was “Peter” who was dismissing the mortal remains of Cardinal Castrillón, and at the same time Pedro was opening the doors of heaven.”

Br. César J. Tobón is directly to the left of the pope, holding the cardinal’s mitre in his hands.

Dear Winston Churchill, ‘THE LION’, Alas, Died This Day 52-Years Ago; Spare A Second To Reflect.

by Anura Guruge

For I, my devotion to Dear Winston is very simple.

IF NOT for Winston you would NOT be reading this in English.

For that I am eternally GRATEFUL to Dear Winston — one of my greatest inspirations.

Sir Winston Churchill’s tomb in Bladon, Oxfordshire,
not far from the magnificent Blenheim Palace where he was born.

I have made my pilgrimage to this tomb, on a wintery day, in 1998 or 1999.

I was the only one there. It was gray, cold and drizzly.

I stood there in awe, silence and solidarity.

My devotion to dear Winston has no caveats. I know that some claim that he was a racist. But, in that I do not think he was that different to that many of his class, from that time. He was Prime Minister when we still had an Empire and despite his understandable reluctance to lose India, I really can’t believe that he set out to undermine coloreds. I know one thing. He was NO Donald Trump! Yes, I have paid him the highest compliment that I can. I named a gorgeous, very regal Golden after him. My ‘Winston’ from 1998.

I was 11-years old when he died.

I can’t say I was that familiar with him at the time of his death. There was no TV in Ceylon.

I do remember, vividly, my parents taking me to see a film of his funeral. That would have been in 1965. It was in color and I think it was over 1 hour long. My adoptive mother cried. I distinctly remember the film ending with a heading splashed across the screen ‘A Journey’s End‘. My adoptive mother talked about that on the way home. They (i.e., my adoptive father & mother) had completed one (of their two) round-the-world diplomatic trips, at the behest of the Ceylon government, the year before. As was her wont, and the fashion of the time, she completed an elaborate scrapbook to document that trip. On the last page she wrote ‘A Journey’s End‘. My adoptive mother, who was an ultra-sensitive person, was ‘rattled’ that the film had used that same phrase! Yes, small things like that bothered her — albeit, not in a bad way. So, whenever I think of Dear Winston’s funeral — ‘A Journey’s End‘ comes to mind.

Anywho …

Just take a second to reflect. Pay homage.

Like I said, IF NOT for dear Winston I would have had to learn frigging German and I am BAD at learning new languages.

Thank YOU, Dear Winston, KG OM CH TD PCc DL FRS RA.

Joaquín Navarro-Valls, Pope John Paul II’s Exemplary Spokesman Died July 5, 2017 — Aged 80.

From “Rome Reports”. Click to access the original.

He was, indubitably, quite the person — a physician, academic, journalist and an inspired diplomat.

He was outstanding as John Paul II’s spokesman and did a masterly job handling the pope’s last days, funeral and sede vacante.

His brilliance made highlighted the bumblings of his successor, Federico Lombardi — it was like Obama being succeeded by Donald!

I, as you can see from what I wrote in my “The Next Pope 2011” a great fan of Dr. Navarro-Valls.

February 3, 2017: A Sad Day, 69th Anniversary Of Mahatma Gandhi’s Funeral.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. “Raj Ghat” in New Delhi: The memorial in – Memorial marking the cremation spot of Mahatma Gandhi

I only discovered a few years ago, quite accidentally, that February 3, 1948 had been the day of Mahatma Gandhi’s Funeral.

The following day, February 4, 1948 was Independence Day for Ceylon. I was looking for newspaper clippings from February 4, 1948 when I came across a picture of the funeral pyre from February 3.

I was quite taken aback.

His funeral pyre hardly had time to cool before Ceylon was celebrating its Independence. How ironic. We got our Independence on his back. India’s and Ceylon’s independence, 6 months apart, was essentially a joint deal, though it is never portrayed as such.

So, now, ahead of Independence Day I make a point of observing the anniversary of the GREAT MAN’s funeral.

Too early as yet for a Google Doodle.

So a footnote.

I surmise that this has to the QUICKEST somebody has got a Google footnote — in my belief that as with Doodle’s they don’t do footnotes for living people. I could be wrong on that. I really haven’t studied Google footnotes.

51762_ng_lincoln_coverAs I have oft mentioned I (still) religiously read each issue of “National Geographic“, cover-to-cover, each month. The only magazine that I now read on a regular basis. Even the “Reader’s Digest” doesn’t make that list anymore, though I do read it, plus any and all photographic magazine I come across, more often that not.

I have been reading, with some interest, this month’s cover story on Lincoln’s funeral train. I knew some about the train and the voyage, but, of course, not to the level of detail in this article. It had an interesting ‘sidebar’ about race-relations in Buffalo, N.Y., over the century, including school segregation, and that was fascinating since I did attend High School, in Buffalo, during 1967 – 1968 — in what was a mixed school at the time. Kensington High School (which is now closed).

This morning I came across this photograph, on pages 44-45, and noticed the date on it. TODAY. April 25, 1865. 150 years ago. To me, an avid fan of the President, this seemed something worth commemorating. I had a very quick look. Didn’t see anything obvious. I can’t, to my horror, find a SINGLE Google Doodle for President Lincoln! How can that be? Yes, I know that they try to avoid political figures BUT President Lincoln, easily and incontrovertibly, transcends politics.

Click to ENLARGE and enjoy. From the April 2015 issue of “National Geographic”. I am sure they will indulge me, in this instance, for trampling on their copyright — since this is for a good cause.
