“Growing Up Smith” Movie (2015) — Brilliant: Very Funny & Emotive In The End.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access ‘IMDb.com’ listing.

Never heard of it, never seen a trailer for it. Then this past Monday I was idly browsing through the DISH program guide when I noticed that it must have been a STARZ preview weekend. “Growing Up Smith” was coming up and it looked interesting. We, for obvious reasons, are suckers for this type of movie — Indians coming of age in the U.S. (or the U.K.). That it was a 10-year old was even better — and as I had hoped Teischan loved it.

Very clever and cute movie. Brilliantly put together. Rip roaringly funny. Really, really funny — at so many levels. Then right at the end … very emotive. Even tear jerking. Teischan was mad that it ended the way it did. But, the ending was good. You could make up your own scenario.

Definitely recommend it. One of the more entertaining movies I have seen of late. Enjoy.

Spanish Seville’s Official 2017 Christmas Poster Shows Archangel Gabriel In A Whole Different Light.

by Anura Guruge

I read and saw this in today’s
U.K. “Daily Mail
which I read a few times a day!

It is a poster to put up around the City that says “Christmas Saville 2017” (in Spanish).

Interesting imagery and on top of it, the most masculine Gabriel I have ever seen.

What were they thinking? Maybe they were indeed trying to tell us something.

Enjoy.

“Florence Foster Jenkins” (2016) — Hilarious, Nearly As Good As “The Producers”.

by Anura Guruge

Watch the trailer on YouTube.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Foster_Jenkins

Started watching it on Amazon Prime yesterday. It had been on my “Watch List” for quite awhile. I wish I had got around to watching it sooner. Exceeded all expectations.

Though it is indeed based on a real person and true story, it is hilarious. That it brings to mind “The Producers” (which I have seen on Broadway and on film) has to be the ultimate accolade.

The two leading stars, as you would expect, are immaculate. But, to I, the star of the show is the diminutive Cosme McMoon played by Simon Helberg. I don’t think I have seen him in anything before — but I am not good at ‘spotting’/recognizing/remembering thespians! I had to look him up. Appears that he is quite the guy, a professional pianist who had a karate black belt at 9. You will enjoy him.

It is available for free if you have Amazon Prime. Couldn’t find it on YouTube. I am sure you can find it on other streaming services.

Definitely recommended. Enjoy.

The “If You Can Read THIS The BITCH Fell Off” T-shirt from the 1990s.

I first saw this, on the back of a biker, during Laconia Bike Week, c. 1996.

I couldn’t stop laughing for two weeks.

I could never wear one since I was NOT a biker.
Thought about getting one for the jet ski, but the lifevest obscured it.

Saw this last night, in Hanover, NH, at the “Salt Hill Pub“, after Christmas Revels 2015 (North).

It is SO CLEVER at multiple levels (at least 3).

It was been worn by a (very nice) waitress. She was KIND enough to let me photograph her back, though when she gave permission, she had no idea what part of her (very attractive) backside I had designs on. She laughed when she saw what I had snapped.

Appears that they sell those T-shirts there and the waitresses wear them, on a rotating basis, as a promotional gimmick. She wanted to know whether I was interested in buying one. Alas, I pointed out to her that I was not in the habit of wearing T-shirts that promoted things and that I no longer partook in beer (just wine).

Third, maybe fourth time, we have been to the “Salt Hill Pub” — all, of course, after a show at the HOP. We like the place. Fun place. Decent food. Decent prices. Very friendly waitresses. Highly recommended.

I saw this on Facebook a few minutes ago.

I am NOT sure whether I was MORE amused, bemused or just plain livid.

Yes, Sri Lankans (like our neighbors the Indians) can be very funny — unintentionally. [In my case, as some of you know, it all has to do with my face, features and build. People just laugh when they see me.]

1970.

Ancient?

I know quite a few women that will be up in arms about that.

BUT, the irony of ironies.

Ceylon? Sri Lanka?

The country PRIDES itself on having a written historical record going back to 3,000 B.C.

There are extant, well preserved stone ruins dating back to at least 160 B.C.

And some CLOWN has the damn audacity to call 1970 ANCIENT.

Ah, dear, dear, dear.

Here is a genuine, c. 150 BC ruin from Anuradhapura. [Note that it is MY city! Check the first 5 letters.] These are pillars of what used to be a Buddhist monastery. See the finely carved ‘sentinel’ stone at the front. Given that my adoptive father was BIG into culture/history/Buddhism and actually had a part-time job (and he had many in addition to his main job in the Ministry of Education), I, in my youth, spent many an hour wandering through these pillars. It was, as I would refer when older, stone-by-stone tourism with my adoptive father. My kids, who complain that I drag them around boring places (such as cathedrals), have no idea how lucky they are.

I am a real ‘Guruge’ child. I love McDonald’s burgers.

I like cake too, specially birthday cake when it is made for ME. This cake is making me smack my lips.

I’ve done this before. I know what is coming.

I can be such a good girl. If I do my best pose can I get another burger, please?

Watch a quick 44 second montage of ‘Braxton’ & ‘Maya’ at McDonald’s … It is set to music. Enjoy.

Sep. 16, 2013.

We got him, as a rescue, on September 28, 2013. He was 10 or 11 weeks old at the time. They didn’t know when he was born. So Deanna decided to make ‘July 20’ his ‘official’ birthday — that being her now deceased father’s birthday. So, Braxton, a joyfully playful beagle, as mischievous as they come, is one year old today.

Teischan made him a birthday cake and later today, per the family custom, he and Maya will go to McDonald’s for a burger each. That, for the last 7 years, has been a family tradition. The dogs go to McDonald’s for burgers on their birthday. Did it with Ulysses, then Maya and now Braxton. Yes, we take them to McDonald’s when it is not there birthday also because they like their burgers. Maya knows McDonald’s. As soon as we pull in she sits up and waits for me to come back with the burgers. Braxton has yet to figure it out — but he is young.

He is about 3 times as big as when we got him. I, purposefully, feed him slightly more than what he should get. He actually now eats MORE than Maya! But, that is OK. He loves his food and gets MORE exercise than most dogs. He runs at least 2.5 miles with me 5 to 6 times a day, in addition to all his other walks, romps around the yard and playing in the house. He is a very healthy and happy dog. Such a ‘little boy’ — though he is fixed. A bundle of joy.

He is the first beagle I have ever had. I am a ‘Golden’ person. I have had Goldens, with no interruption, since 1988. I really didn’t know anything about beagles until we brought Benny/Braxton home. Then we started hearing and reading about the horror stories. How they take off, how they howl etc. etc. The running away is NOT a problem. He runs, off leash, with me and has been doing so for over 8 months. That Maya runs, off leash, too is, of course, a big factor. But given that I have run with dogs, near daily, for 20 years, I have worked out many things — a key among them being that running as a pack is very IMPRINTING to a dog. It has to be running as opposed to walking. They know the difference. The running is a pack thing.

We are glad we got him. As Deanna loves to tease me he was everything I had always said “I don’t want”. I like my puppies as early as I can get them. Maya was 8 weeks old when we got her and I thought that was old! Braxton was 10 or 11 weeks old. Prior to that anytime somebody mentioned a puppy that was even 9 weeks old, I would say “Nah, too old”. Plus it was a little dog and everybody knows that I like big dogs, the bigger the better. But, Braxton makes my day. Though he will steal food, destroy anything he can get his snout at and generally only does 40% of what we ask him to do, he has this wonderful personality! When we got him, having lived in a crate for much of his life, he was very thin and nervous. Now he is a very confident dog. That makes me happy.

So, happy birthday Braxton, my rascal boy that Deanna spoils like there is no tomorrow and is Teischan’s plaything.

Braxton, July 20, 2014 his official 1 year birthday.

The day we got him, September 28, 2013 — 9 months and 3 weeks ago.

Cracked me up.

As I write this I am holding in my hand a book by British Nigel Cawthorne entitled “Sex Lives of the Popes”.

My ‘The Next Pope 2011‘ book has a lists of popes who fathered children and popes that were married.

Enough said. If he had said ‘of late’ that might not have even cut it!
Of course I have heard stories that I will not repeat here, but ….

As some of you know I lead a very sheltered life and I have even been asked whether I was celibate, SO I don’t actually understand Chelsea Handler’s remark as to what penetration has to do with power … I worry. Is she just talking about us males? What about the fairer sex? Very strange.

But, popes are noted for remaining celibate! Maybe he dropped the ‘not‘?

Writing about popes isn’t easy. They should leave that to us who slave long hours trying to keep our facts right about the popes.
