Garmin Fenix 5: Beta Firmware Ver. 9.53 Adds GALILEO ‘GPS’ Support — And That Is BIG.

Just announced today. Pretty significant in that Garmin now offers Galileo ‘GPS’ on the just released Fenix 5 Plus family.

Though I have not experienced it myself (or more to the point know any better) a LOT of people have been complaining about GPS issues with the Fenix 5 — though mainly when trying to get GPS in cities with a lot of skyscrapers blocking the signals. Galileo is said to have a ‘stronger’ more ‘penetrative’ signal. Hence the excitement.

But, remember this is a brand new BETA and Garmin just rolled out Firmware 9.20 just this week. So tread with caution. I thought about it and decided that I will wait. {Smile}.

Well, I wanted to make sure that I shared this with YOU.

The features are per what I gave you a heads up on 7-days ago: i.e., TOPO maps, Garmin Pay, Music & Galileo “GPS”.

One thing new is the expensive titanium cases. Lots of models. Check them out here, on the Garmin site.

It is claimed to have “blood oxygen” monitoring — and it does, BUT only in the Fenix 5X Plus. Got that. Just in the 5X Plus.

Garmin is claiming availability within the week BUT I doubt that. I will most likely UPGRADE to one, trade-in in my current Fenix 5, BUT I will probably wait till Christmas.

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus With Maps, Pay, Music & Galileo (GPS) On The Way.

The belief is that this PLUS RANGE, across the Garmin Fenix 5, 5S & 5X, will be available by September. IF SO, given the problems with the first batch of Garmin Vivoactive 3 & Forerunner 645, I, for one, will wait till close to Christmas before getting one (assuming I do).

Given that Music and Pay are now available on the Forerunner 645 I knew it would just be a matter of time before Garmin had to offer it on the Fenix 5 range. I am interested in Pay, but not the music. I like the sound of silence I can experience where I run — i.e., basically in the woods of New Hampshire.

Built-in maps, as in the Fenix 5x, on a 5 Plus, would be nice.

Galileo navigation will augment GPS and GLONASS and promises to provide better accuracy since it is a non-military system aimed at consumers — such as us.

No wonder the Fenix 5 prices are dropping.

I will keep you posted.
