Best Thing For Sri Lanka, Right Now, Would Be For China To Take It Over & Manage It! {Smile}

by Anura Guruge

Weekend article in ‘The New York Times’ highlighting Sri Lanka’s never ending woes.

It is unlikely to ever happen, BUT it is worth a thought.

Most, bar India, are unlikely to care, but India is now too big for even China to want to mess around.

There is, of course, a basis for my provocative thought. China is said to be slowly gobbling up whatever bits of Sri Lanka it can — starting with the strategic harbor in Galle. So, China sure has an incentive, though even they may decide that Sri Lankan people are a lost cause.

The political situation in Sri Lanka is untenable. It has been neverending intrigue and infighting for 30-years. The people are fickle too. They vote in a party and within 6-months start to hate the party they just put in power. They really are like kids. I hate to say this but we haven’t acted like adults in the last few decades.

Hence, the need for colonization AGAIN!

Yes, 200-years of continuous colonization appears to have left a mark. We seem to require discipline instilled by a foreign power.

You can just see Sri Lanka under Chinese rule! They will stop all this nonsense. They will the economy back on track. Make it safe for tourist.

Yes, I know it is unlikely to happen, but it is something to dream about. A placid Sri Lanka with no infighting.

“The Good Karma Hospital”, ITV Series, Now On “Acorn TV”, Shot In Sri Lanka Though Set In Southern India!

Click to access IMDb.com listing for the ITV Series.

It was one of the new shows available on ‘Acorn TV‘ (i.e., British shows) on the Roku. I was attracted to it just by its title — since it immediately brought to mind ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. Well it is NOWHERE close to being that funny — BUT to be fair, it is not meant to be. It is more of a (somewhat obvious, predictable and stereotyped) romance-drama. It is OK. Teischan finds it ‘acceptable’ and I found it HOPING that she would like it. “Mrs. Hughes” from ‘Downton Abbey‘ made and appearance and that was a bonus.

Right from the start the scenery, especially the BEACHES, reminded me of CeylonSri Lanka — especially those around Galle that I was extremely conversant with during my 14-years there. But, having also been to India, multiple times, I knew that the southwest coast of Southern India was similar. The catamaran boats shown also reminded me of Sri Lanka ….

Then I checked IMDb.com. It was indeed shot in Sri Lanka! Wow. Now I will have to tell Teischan.

The 2nd Test, in Galle, was quite the epic. 22 wickets fell in the 2nd day. Starc getting 11 wickets in the match and Dilruwan Perera getting 6 for 70 in the second innings.

Who would have thought that Australia would CRUMBLE, this easy, for the 2nd time in a ROW! Wow.

The 1st Test was amazing too. Who would have bet on Sri Lanka winning after their 1st innings.

Tremendous come back from Sri Lanka after their shellacking in England. I guess it is true what they say that the Sri Lankans are hard to beat at home.

Well done. Great cricket.

So much cricket on TAP (yet again). I can’t keep up.

From “gcatholic.org” run by my friend Gabriel Chow. Click to ENLARGE and read.

Just had an e-mail from Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo (Sri Lanka) — a longtime family friend. Thought I would share given my Catholic and Sri Lankan readership. The news hasn’t hit all the relevant Catholic Websites as yet. [I sent Gabriel, at gcatholic.org, an e-mail.]

I did NOT know Bishop Elmo Perera. I see, thanks to Gabriel’s outstanding work, that we had 3 bishops all called Perera. Yes, a common name in Sri Lanka (a local variant of the Portuguese ‘Pereira‘ — for pear tree). I actually have cousins named ‘Perera’, and as is not unusual in Sri Lanka, they are Buddhists — i.e., names are not a reliable indicator of religion in Sri Lanka.

Theoretically, if not for the fact that I was adopted and do not know my biological family, Galle is my ‘home town’. I knew Galle well in my youth. Used walk on the ramparts. Now when I see them on TV, when cricket matches are being played in Galle, it makes me very nostalgic. Beautiful part of the world. After Galle there is nothing but Indian ocean all the way to Antarctica.
