The New ‘Fitbit Charge 4’ GPS Appears To Be Highly Accurate — Better Than Garmin Fenix 6!

I will not mince words. I am very impressed with the Fitbit Charge 4. Most accurate Fitbit I have encountered and it was my 5th.

I have worn it for 4-days now, side-by-side, on the same wrist, as my $700 Garmin Fenix 6. Step count on the Fitbit Charge 4 has tracked that of the Fenix pretty well. Within 1%. That is amazing for a Fitbit.

And then GPS. Wow. Am I blown away. You have two GPS tracks above.

I would contend that on the longer walk the Fitbit GPS tracked my path better — with more detail. I walked with the dogs and they drag me from side-to-side of the road — and these are DIRT ROADS in the woods with hardly any traffic. So, crisscrossing is not an issue.

Then having the ‘heart rate’ & ‘pace’ overlays on top of the GPS track — brilliant & magic. Love it.

I am humbled. As many of you know, I am a Garmin MAN — and I even own Garmin shares (and have done so for a longtime). Yes, I owned Fitbit too, but that was NOT pretty.

No, I will NOT be wearing the Fitbit Charge 4. SMILE. Slightly too small for my liking. I will be sending it back, with my compliments, to my friends at ‘Heart Rate Monitors USA’ who were kind enough to ship me this for evaluation. Job done. I am pleased. Nice tracker.

Well done, Fitbit.

My Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’ Now (@ S/W 4.10) Has The ‘Fenix 6’ Features — And I Love It!

Well we knew it (i.e., Fenix 6 features on the older watches) would come but I wasn’t expecting it this fast. WOW. I am delighted, though I am also hoping to get a Fenix 6 in the coming weeks!

From what I can see the software was downloaded in two batches — Thursday night and Friday night (i.e., yesterday). I got the ‘4.10’ message last night.

Took a second to get used to the ‘widgets at a glance‘ BUT now I love it. You do get to see more data, quicker.

I tried the Fenix 6 watch faces. I have NEVER been a fan of Garmin watch faces! They are interesting BUT not my cup of tea.

I was gone to a multicultural festival all day. So, haven’t had timed to play around with any of the other features. But, they all seem to be there.

Well done, Garmin. You did good.

SMILE.

Do I Get Rid Of My Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’ & Get A New Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire?

by Anura Guruge

My Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’ that I got in May 2019.

I have known that the Garmin Fenix 6 Series was going to be introduced on August 29, 2019, for a few weeks now. I knew it was going to have a larger (i.e., 1.3″ (& 1.4″ on ‘X’)) display than the MARQ or Fenix 5. But, until today I had not, alas, seen all the specs.

Do I need a Fenix 6? No.

Do I want a Fenix 6? Probably.

Why? Because I like to have the latest and greatest (though in this case the MARQ, with its pretty neat titanium body, is still probably the greatest).

OK. Time for full disclosure. I am SUPPOSED to get a Fenix 6 so I can evaluate it and write some reviews. That would be nice. But, that is not a given as yet.

To be honest, only one feature tickles me — right now. And that is SOLAR. But, that is not going to work on two fronts. I have always stayed clear of the ‘X’ models. I have small (‘girlie’) wrists! The ‘X’ would overwhelm it and make me look stupid (or stupider). The 47mm size, as you can see above, fits perfectly. So, the ‘X’ is out. For now that rules out Solar. Plus, I live in New Hampshire and most of my running/walking/hiking is done under tall trees. So, it is either winter when the Sun is not that high in the sky or it is not winter and the trees block most of the sunshine.

At 66 (next week) I don’t need any of the fany performance-related features. I just need time, distance, pace, HR. At my age you are just glad you still have a pulse.

I am pretty sure that all of the software features on the Fenix 6, including power management, will be available on the MARQ, Fenix 5 Plus and Forerunner 945 by November. I will try and get that confirmed.

So, that is where I sit.

I doubt whether I will get rid of my MARQ.

But, I probably will try and get a Fenix 6 as well. SMILE. Evaluating and writing detailed reviews has its benefits.

So, stay tuned.

Garmin Partners With Amazon PRIME For Music — Download Music To Your ‘M’ Watches From Prime.

You need a new Garmin APP
from the Garmin ‘Connect IQ’ Store.

This is BIG, especially IF you are already an Amazon Prime member (and I am, though I am not into music on my Garmins).

Thanks to Amazon you can even have a 30-day FREE trial — Amazon hoping to snare you into Prime.

I am NOW a believer in Prime. I wasn’t for the longest time. I always ordered enough (e.g. $25) to get free-shipping. Then, maybe, 6-years ago, maybe earlier I finally signed-up.

Now I am a Believer.

Full disclosure. I am also a long-term Amazon shareholder. SMILE.

But, I watch a fair amount of Prime Video. That, in my book, pays for itself.

Anyway, this is BIG. Worth looking into.

BIG DAY … a week from today. August 28, 2019. Fenix 6, Vivoactive 4, Venu, etc. SMILE.

Stay tuned.

Fenix 6 Has 1.4″ Display, Vivoactive 4 Might Do So Too — But What Is The ‘Garmin Venu’ About?

by Anura Guruge

The Garmin Venu, with a 43mm case, is YET ANOTHER watch that is supposed to debut next week — on August 28, 2019.

With two buttons it looks very much like the Vivoactive 4 — and there is a Vivoactive 4S for smaller wrists, so the Venu just can’t be just a smaller version of the VA4.

I get a feeling that it is a lower cost, i.e., $150, range competitor against Fitbit — with less sports functionality than that on a Vivoactive 3 or Vivoactive 4.

I (as a Garmin shareholder and owner) think that Garmin has TOO MANY MODELS. It is crazy. It cost real money for Garmin to introduce, maintain and support models — but it is also confusing for consumers and for retailers!

Yes, the Venu puzzles me. Do you have any ideas?

Why A New Garmin Vivoactive 4 — Possibly A Bigger Display As With The Fenix 6?

by Anura Guruge

Yes, we all know that Garmin (and for that matter, Fitbit) love to introduce new models, churn the base and hopefully get a few more sales.

I was surprised to hear that there was to be a Garmin Fenix 6, announced on August 28, 2019 — but then I knew that the the Forerunner 945 and the MARQ Series (and I upgraded from a Fenix 5 Plus to a MARQ Expedition) were squeezing the Fenix 5 series. Then I learnt that the Fenix 6 will have a 1.4″ display as opposed to the 1.2″ found in most Garmin watches of today.

So, this is what I am thinking. Will the Vivoactive 4 also have a 1.4″ display. I have read that its body is fractionally bigger than the current Vivoactive 3. They might be able to squeeze in that extra 0.2″. That would be a biggie.

I could be wrong, but judging from the leaked pictures on the Web, I think I see two buttons on the side. That could be good too. I owned two Vivoactive 3s. I liked the touchscreen. That was what I was used to. I thought I would never be able to use a smartwatch without a touchscreen. I was very wrong. Today, I would not get one with a touchscreen. I like the precision and speed I can get with the buttons on a Fenix or MARQ (or for that matter a Forerunner).

Yes, the Vivoactive 3, by design, doesn’t have many of the high end, esoteric functions found on the Forerunner, Fenix or MARQ. It is meant to be that way for price differentiation. They didn’t need to bring out a Vivoactive 4 to add some of these software features to the existing Vivoactive 3(M).

If you hadn’t notice the whole Vivoactive 3 Series is on sale at Garmin and at Amazon. There are actually some GOOD DEALS on Amazon right now. Go check.

I feel bad for those that bought a Vivoactive 3 in the last few months. I know it has been very popular. Now they are going to feel that they need to trade-up at some point. But, lets wait and see. To I the only justification would be a bigger and better display. That could be a game changer.
