NASA created orbital map of 39 Geminid 2013 major shooting stars
seen over the last few days.

Earth is the small blue dot at 1 o’clock.
The bigger yellow blob is the Sun.

All the debris, left behind by the asteroid,
is, of course, following the asteroid’s
orbital path around the Sun.

If you see any shooting stars tonight, just counting your blessing. It wasn’t an illusion. You got to see a part of the annual The Geminid meteor shower show, which peaks tonight and into tomorrow. Experts consider the Geminids to be the best (and most intense) meteor show each year. What we are seeing is debris shed from a small asteroid, 3200 Phaethon, discovered in 1983 by NASA. The Earth right now is going through that debris field. Hence the shooting stars. Enjoy.

I really didn’t have the time tonight to go out and gaze. Devanee had to go out caroling at two nursing homes. But, I did see one, quite clearly, around 8pm, in Wolfeboro, NH, as we were leaving the ‘Sugar Hill’ facility.
