Only knew him by reputation though I am sure he and I must have been at the same ‘Computer Shows’ (e.g., InterOp) at the same time.

Always admired him for his vision. Shame to see him go. But I am getting to THAT AGE. Lot of people I knew are now old (as am I). So Gene Amdahl (who I had met) and now Andy Grove. So two giants from the 1970s/1980s computer age.

I had hoped to find quite a few videos on YouTube that I would be able to share with you. This was the only one I managed to locate so far.

Good video. IF you have never met the great man this video will give you a very good feel as to his personality. As you will hear he was very soft spoken with a noticeable Scandinavian accent though he was born in South Dakota. He was also a very gentle man albeit with an iron resolve which you could sometimes clearly see in his eyes. Always very deliberate and thoughtful in what he says.

1984. Watch the video. He got the PC architecture part 100% right! Wow.

Now listen to Lore Harp at the 3:13 mark. Listen to what she has to say about PC CLONE vendors. Wow, talking about getting something WRONG. Great contrast here. Gene gets it right and she is dead wrong. Funny.

I, as you can see, as is my wont, is trying to pull together as much media of Gene in one place for future reference. IF you have any photos or videos of Gene that you would like to SHARE please let me know. I will work with you. Thank you.

Gene Amdhal, the father of IBM mainframes (my passion and profession for 35 years), is one of my all time heroes — alongside the likes of Winston and Nelson!

He was a GREAT MAN and a wonderful human being.

I was privileged to have met him twice, once in 1975 and the other in 1995.

In 1975, as a 21 year old, in my first year at IBM, I was sent to a 2-day Gene Amdahl seminar, at a hotel at Heathrow Airport, London. I sat in the front row in open awe.

In 1995 he paid me the ultimate compliment by attending one of my networking seminars and allowing me to join him at breakfast and dinner, before and after my presentation. Doing a seminar with Gene Amdahl in the audience was such an honor. Over dinner he asked me: : ‘Bob Metcalfe, that thing he invented … how is it doing?’

Well, I did a long post about Gene Amdahl and I last year. Best to read that if you are interested.

Suffice to say that I am greatly saddened. I knew that this day would come. 92 wasn’t a bad innings. Of that I am glad. There was still more he could have given us BUT I am thankful for what he did give us. Great loss.

Thank YOU for everything Gene.
