It Was Good Friday, IF Bernie Sanders’ Bird Had Been White It Would Have Been Hailed As The Holy Spirit!

What a shame for Bernie that the bird that endorsed him on Good Friday was a brown sparrow.

IF it had been white, irrespective of Bernie being a Jew, many a Christian would immediately have seen it as the Holy Spirit anointing Bernie Sanders as the next President.

Alas a sparrow doesn’t count. Just Bernie’s rotten luck.

Fidelity Investments Mobile APP Not Meant For Heavy Duty Trading.

by Anura Guruge

fidelitymapp

Click to ENLARGE and view here. Screenshot from Google Play APP store. NOT MY ACCOUNT. But to be on the safe side I redacted the dollar value in case somebody thought I had that much money. I wish. Smile.

Though I have the Fidelity Investments Mobile APP for Android on my pads I do not use it that often. I don’t need to. I am on my PC enough of the time and when I travel I do not trust Wi-Fi to access any of my financial data. So most of the time when I fire up the APP it is to see whether a specific transaction, e.g., a transfer, has occurred or to get a snapshot of my positions.

Whenever I have used it, however, I have had this uneasy feeling of ‘Hhhhmmm … that is different … that is not right’!

So today, Good Friday, with the Markets closed and the ice/sleet precipitation precluding my morning run I had some spare time. I brought my Android Pad up to my desk and checked what the APP showed against what I am used to seeing on my desktop.

And the views are different. And we all know why. They have to cater for the small screen sizes on phones. But the changes are interesting. On the desktop view, the QUANTITY, is the 8th column. In the Mobile APP it is the first. Hhhmmm. Strange that. Most of us, I would have to think, typically know what the quantity we own of a position. Maybe that is just I — probably because I can only afford so few of any position. SMILE.

Since I hadn’t talked to them in weeks — and I like my regular chats with them (and they claim likewise (though they have to say that)) — I called up Fidelity. With the Markets closed I knew it would be a light day for them. Very pleasant and helpful as ever. Confirmed that the views are different.

Also confirmed something else which I suspected. While stock prices will reflect the latest OPTION prices on the APP may not be as up to-date! So if you own lost of options as I do your total account value will be different to what you see on the desktop because of the variation in option prices! Very interesting. And that explained much. I had seen that discrepancy. Now I know.

Also … The APP is not designed to let you do much serious RESEARCH. You need a desktop/laptop for that.

OK? Just wanted to share this.

Happy Purim 2016 — One Jewish Holiday Where One Can Safely Say ‘Happy’.

by Anura Guruge

Esther

“The Banquet of Esther and Ahasuerus” and the story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther.

Given that I am a bit slow on the uptake, despite efforts by a number of good Jews, I have never been able to keep the Jewish holidays straight and always worry that I might use the wrong appellation, in particular ‘happy’, when sending a Jewish person a greeting on a Jewish holidays. In the same I know NOT to wish any thinking Christians ‘Happy Good Friday’ — ‘Happy’, as it relates to Easter, only applicable on Sunday. But wish Purim, I gather, though I could still be wrong, that the correct and appropriate greeting is indeed Happy Purim. So Happy Purim.

Good Friday Not A Federal Holiday In The U.S. But Stock Markets Closed As Are 12 State Governments.

by Anura Guruge

12 U.S. States observe Good Friday by closing Government Offices (per Wikipedia), they being: Connecticut, Delaware, Guam, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Puerto Rico, and Tennessee.

I have talked about this before, viz. Easter (or at least Good Friday) NOT being an official holiday in the U.S. (though as the above suggest about 80% of the country celebrates it and Easter Sunday (quite rightly) has the highest church attendance of the year (well ahead (quite rightly) of Christmas (which is in reality not a religious holiday per se)). Tomorrow, Good Friday, as always, will feel very strange to me. The stock markets are closed and that unsettles me because I like to trade — BUT the kids will be at school and there will be a mail delivery. Does not seem right.

As I have also harped about before, it, i.e., Good Friday, is ironically an observed ‘Public & Bank’ holiday (equivalent of Federal Holiday) in Sri Lanka though only 7.4% of the population is Christian! Sri Lanka (my Ceylon) is, however, holiday happy and ‘rich’. In 2016 they have 25 ‘Public & Bank’ holiday compared to the 10 in the U.S. Here is the list.

Note how they OBSERVE Monthly Full Moon days (Poya Days) that do NOT fall on a Sunday. So in March there are 3 holidays and 3 again in April. The holidays are WAY DOWN from when I was growing up in Ceylon in the 1950s/1960s. Easter Monday used to be a holiday. In those days, taking into account the Monthly Poya holidays, it was estimated (by a cousin of mine (who was an accountant)) that there was a holiday, on average, every 19 days!

What is More Important: Good Friday or Easter Sunday?

by Anura Guruge

goodfridaysunday

It was doing the Jewish Purim one day apart from Good Friday post, yesterday, that got me thinking. With that post and the one I did last year about Passover being on the same weekend I used Good Friday as the key date (though I included Easter Sunday too).

Given my interest in religious history I can argue on either side of this. Yes, I know, understand and appreciate the basics. Crucifixion vs. Resurrection. The Passion, the suffering and redemption of sin vs. hope, eternal life (and the true basis of what makes Christianity, Christianity).

That Good Friday is not a Federal Holiday in the very Christian (60%++) U.S. always amazes me. Growing up in very Buddhist Ceylon we had BOTH Good Friday and Easter Monday off — thanks to the British/European influence.

I am glad that this question gets debated. Do YOU have an opinion or preference?

2016: Easter Good Friday And Jewish Purim One Day Apart. Very Rare.

by Anura Guruge

Purimdfsfda

Click to ENLARGE. My creation so I can claim copyright.

Last year, i.e., 2015, we had Easter and Jewish Passover fall on the same weekend. The first full day of Passover cannot happen on a Friday. So you can never have the first day of Passover on Good Friday. But as was the case last year you can have the start of Passover, at sunset, taking place on Good Friday. Passover and Good Friday being a day apart happens quite often — as you can see from the table. And this makes sense since these two ‘Holy Days’ were once related.

Purim occurring near Easter is more rare — though Purim can fall on Good Friday as it did in 2005 & 2008.

Passover alway occurs 30 days after Purim. So you can see why Purim doesn’t occur that often close to Easter. As to the big fluctuations. Mainly to do with the fact the Jewish calendar, by and large, is Lunar-based.
