All Of The TV ‘Government Shutdown’ Clocks Are ONE DAY OFF — i.e., Day Short; ’12’ When It Should Be ’13’.

by Anura Guruge

CNN. Go to cnn.com and check.

MSNBC — TV channel. Photo of TV.

WHY?

Because they are counting the DIFFERENCE.

It needs to be INCLUSIVE.

People do it all the time when they are doing dates.

They take the DIFFERENCE between the two days. For some applications that is ‘OK’, BUT not when you are counting something like a SHUTDOWN.

You have to INCLUDE Day 1, in this case, Saturday, December 22, 2018.

My calendar above shows it clearly.

But, try a simple example. Shutdown started Dec. 22. So, how many days shutdown at the end of Dec. 24. It is 3-days, NOT 2.

I actually saw Anderson Cooper talking about the shutdown being in its 13th day, above the CNN clock that said ’12’!

Amazing.

Acadia Ocean Drive in March 2018
when we visited in Winter during a storm.

The problem is the SNOW. They have kept the roads open BUT are not plowing.

I heard, this morning, that Ocean Drive is basically closed due to snow.

Not sure you are planning on visiting right now but I wanted to give you a heads up.

We went in early March 2018. I had fun. I walked the entire Ocean Drive twice — once in a gail.

Hopefully the SHUTDOWN will be over by March 2019!

Cricket, Afghan Cricket At That, Gets Talked About On The Floor Of The U.S. Senate — Today, Thanks To Rand Paul.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Rand Paul used a variant of this slide, from his “Waste Report”, on the Senate Floor.

As some of you know, I am a political and news junkie. So, I have been intrigued by Senator Rand Paul’s (R-Kentucky) attempts to do a filibuster of sorts, on the floor of the U.S. Senate, to force another U.S. Government Shutdown at midnight.

It is not getting the wall-to-wall TV coverage it deserves.

I happen to catch a snippet of it on CNN around 6pm.

Rand Paul (of the busted ribs) was talking about cricket, Afghan cricket and this supposed televised cricket league.

His contention is that this is a waste in that most Afghans do not have TV. I am not sure that is true. Yes, of course, there will be many, many rurals areas without TV but there are also large urban centers.

Plus, cricket in Afghanistan is thriving and is, understandably, a source of great pride. So, in this instance Rand Paul might be doing an disservice and injustice to Afghans — in particular the cricket fans.

I have seen him a few times on TV, since Friday, talking about the current Government Shutdown.

Each time I have been AMAZED to see how mature and REASONABLE he is! He is SO, SO UNLIKE everybody else in this Trump Mad House.

He actually comes across as an ADULT. Wow.

I am impressed.

The only person I have seen of Trump’s associates that comes across as being non-obnoxious.

I wish him well. Not sure how he will fare, long-term in this Administration — but then again this Administration might not last long.

‘Acadia National Park’ (Maine) Remains Partially Open Despite 2018 Government Shutdown.

by Anura Guruge

Despite the Shutdown that started at midnight Friday, Acadia National Park stayed partially open on Saturday, January 20, 2018 and the plans are that that would continue to be the case Sunday.

Only a very small section of the Park Loop Road, on Mount Desert Island, is open — due to snow and ice. They will not be opening any new stretches during the Shutdown.

All the toilets are closed and I assume as are the Visitor Centers. The Park Rangers will also not respond to any emergencies. You will have to call 911 and get State or Town help.

But, they have NOT closed the gates! That is good — but that can change.

An irony of such Shutdowns is that they STOP updating Government Websites! So, you can’t find the latest status of Park closing on the Web. They will not be answering the phone either.

But, for now, this is better than what happened during the 2013 Shutdown when they did close the gates pretty early on.

I will try to keep you posted.

bigsmile

The MARKET is very important to me. I live off the market; not very well but I muddle and struggle through. So, I spend a LOT of time following, tracking and analyzing the market.

Just as I didn’t stop smiling during the October 2013 Government Shutdown, for which I still thank the Republicans with all my heart, I haven’t stopped smiling all day today.

I wanted the Fed to START tapering. This ‘to taper or not to taper’ was killing the market. Lets get it done. It was baked in anyway per my estimates — and I was right.

I sat down, actually lay down, at 1:57 to watch the Fed announcement.

To ME it was the Goldilocks scenario. Not too much, not too little and plenty of dovish cooing that interest rates will be near 0% for the remainder of MY lifetime.

Perfect. Thank YOU, Ben. You are THE MAN. I will miss you. You are not good enough to wipe clean Paul Volcker’s shoes but you did good.

I watched the Dow go down to begin with KNOWING that that would not last.

Reason and common sense prevailed. Perfect.

Now you would THINK that I, a person who lives off the market, would want higher rates. Not really. I have, after a lot of blood, sweat and tears, have worked out a decent income producing portfolio through a synergistic mix of junk bonds (read BJBHX) and ETFs. I made 6% on my fixed income while maintaining my initial principle more or less intact (the more or less having to do with the hit it takes, once a month, when the dividends are paid out). Last week, on e-mail, I was talking to a fixed income PROFESSIONAL who charges people for managing their fixed income. She agreed that she can’t even come close to 6% — without eating into capital. All the hours I spend doing research and massaging data using Excel does pay off.

I do, at some point, want to share some of my investment finds with you all. I have already told you, multiple times, about BJBHX.

I have a gem of a stock market mutual fund in my stock portfolio. I found it 4 years ago after years of research. I sometimes feel guilty about it. It is an obscure, $75 per transaction up front, fund. I only found it because I can expend tons of computer resources into crunching data. This mutual is good. Very good. But, I am afraid to publicize it because it might take a hit if it gets too big.

Thank YOU, Fed. Thank YOU, Ben. Thank you for what you have done. Now please go away and let Janet come in and take us to new heights.

Two Decent High Yield Products Now That, Thanks To The Republicans, FED Tapering Is Off The Table Till At Least June 2014.

I live by high-yield investments.

That is not a figure of speech. I really do. For the last few years I derive all the income we live by and send two kids to expensive Colleges in Massachusetts through high-yield investments and some judicious juggling of the daily 0% APR offers I get from credit-cards.

So when it comes to high-yield, dividend-paying products, it is NOT theory when it comes to me. It is very much practice. IF I screw up not only do we lose money but we have less income.

Yes, of course, IF I was rich and had a few million like most folks in Alton do, getting income, even in these days of ultra-low interest rates, would be easy. The challenge is getting income in today’s low-interest market when you DON’T have a couple of million dollars to invest.

I have already talked about my on-and-off, infatuation with BJBHXAberdeen (née Artio) Global High Income Fund. BJBHX, which I have owned for 4 or 5 years, if not more, is my backstop. Literally my bread-and-butter.

Then I mess around with other products. Yes, I do hours of research. I do NOT trust anybody. I do my own. Maybe when my son starts his hedge fund (and he is already out canvassing folks) I might let him manage some of the little I have.

In the meantime I thought, now that tapering is OFF the table till June 2014, and do NOT believe the April 2014 garbage, that I should share some of my hard gained knowledge with you. These two, EOS and SDIV serve me well. I have been with them less than a year and yes I took a blood-bath, from which I have since emerged unscathched, when the original tapering talks started in the Summer. Now older (and probably a tad wiser (though that wasn’t hard given the very low bar I was coming from)) I had decided that I was going to weather the tapering storm because in time, GOOD investments would recover. Then came the Republicans and the Government Shut-Down. As I shared with YOU, I started smiling BECAUSE I, a political, news and financial junkie, knew how the cards will get dealt. I was right. Tapering was history.

So check out these products. YOU MAY BE TOO LATE. So be cautious. Prices are going up.

This is stupid and spiteful.

NASA could have kept its public Website up
during the Government Shutdown.

This is yet another example of the petulant behavior by petty government officials akin to closing down the open-air, free-to-all WW II memorial in D.C.

Yes, I fully understand that they might not have the resources to keep the homepage of the NASA public Website updated — though I again iterate, the buggers are going to get back pay, so why aren’t they back at work?

This is beyond the pale.

The clown in charge of NASA and the one who ordered the Website to be taken down. He should be fired.

This is the clown in charge of NASA right now — Charles Bolden, and I do NOT see anything bold in his action. Just plain cowardice and bratishness. He should be ashamed of himself. He should be supporting the President. But, then again he seems to be way, way out of his depth. He should be fired along with the other scam-artist, Bryan Sivak, who is responsible for the crippled healthcare.gov JOKE.

Just last week, as reported here, NASA, yet again, screwed up, BIG TIME, and wasted $11 million dollars of taxpayer money trying to send up a simple weather balloon (BRRISON) to snap some pictures of my comet, Comet ISON, C/2012 S1 (ISON). They couldn’t get the telescope to unlatch. This was NOT rocket science. This was a helium weather balloon. $11 million. Wonder how many pockets got lined with that money. I could have successfully achieved that mission for under $800,000. But, then again, I am competent and have always been.

As we know NASA’s Website gets regularly hacked, because competence is not really a requirement to work at NASA. It was hacked just 3 weeks ago. Now we don’t even have a hacked site. Nothing. Deep empty space — probably just like the inside of Bolden’s balding head.

Given that I, on principle, abhor human suffering, of any sort, I was always in favor of the Government workers getting back pay — as was the case with the last shutdown 17 years ago.

I can’t imagine what it would be like not to get the back pay. It would devastate families. So, I am relieved and happy about the back pay, though as a political junkie I am well aware that neither the Senate or soon-to-be-impeached Obama has approved it. But, it will happen.

So, I yet again ask the most fundamental of question.

Given that they will receive BACK pay, why aren’t they BACK at work?

No work, no pay. I understand that too.

Back Pay, Back to work. That is the American way.

So what is the deal here?

This is such a farce. Plus, to my esteemed friends in the Tea Party — what are you saving now, other than your face and privates?

Back pay coupled with all the loss in productivity will cost the country more than if the Government was kept open.

The ONLY thing that deserved to be closed and it did that all on its own because of the fraud perpetrated by Obama brown noser Bryan Sivak was Healthcare.gov. That isn’t a joke. That system is a billion dollar FRAUD on the U.S. taxpayers.

I can tell YOU for a FACT that D.C. government workers who were furloughed on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, were being re-classified as ‘ESSENTIAL’ on Thursday, October 4, so that they can again start getting paid.

I have no problem, whatsoever, with that. I am glad. I do not want anybody to suffer because of rank stubbornness and stupidity of folks making $174,000 a year.

This whole shutdown is a farce.

The media, as ever, seems impotent when it comes to highlighting the facts. We heard that the furloughed government workers can claim UNEMPLOYMENT now — and pay it back IF they receive back pay.

I am more than happy for them to receive BACK PAY.

After yesterday’s inane car-ramming incident (by another deranged idiot) a crucial point came to light.

The Capitol Police ARE WORKING WITHOUT PAY — irrespective of back pay.

Kudos, THANK YOU and way to go.

Not so with many, many others. They are NOT working. They are staying at home.

While I understand that it is NOT their fault, why should they get back pay?

Who do they think they are … school superintendents in NH?

IF they like the Capitol Police go to work, irrespective of work, I will be DELIGHTED that they get back pay — even with a 5% bonus to pay for interest on money they would have had to borrow.

But, back pay if you don’t work.

What is this? U.S.A. or Italy?

All this said, I am still smiling. I am a political junkie. But, my politics are complicated. This shutdown does help further my agenda — though Obama is no longer a part of it. He is history. I am thinking 2014 and 2016.
