A Naked Eye Visible Comet, FINALLY, 21P/Giacobini–Zinner — In September 2018.

It will NOT be spectacular, and it is definitely not a great comet, BUT, if it is naked eye visible, it, with its green tinge (due to its chemical composition), should be quite the sight up there. We have not see a decent comet since the mid-1980s. Comet ISON, on which I expended considerable time and energy, vaporized when it got too close to the Sun.

No such danger with 21P/Giacobini–Zinner. This is not a sungrazer.

The ‘P’ in the 21P denotes that it is a periodic comet; i.e., a comet that has made at least 2 well observed orbits around the Sun. Actually 21P orbits the Sun every 6 years. It is very periodic. It doesn’t go too far away. Just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. It is well known and well studied comet that was discovered in 1900.

I will keep you posted. I was excited to hear that it might be naked eye visible. Wow.

“Jordan JW Trio”, Celtic With A Twist, Performing In Barnstead (NH), Saturday, July 14, 2018.

A short video I shot with my Sony a7 II.

The bagpipers that regaled us during the 10-minute intermission.

Again my video (as you, no doubt, cantell).

Jordan JW Trio” were good, some of their vocal renditions exceptional and there were even some glimpses of brilliance. I was impressed and enjoyed their 110-minute performance — which included a few non-celtic numbers. They reminded me of ‘The Woods Tea Co’ (below) and when they played “The Wild Rover” they confirmed that I had been on the mark. Being compared to “Woods Tea” is not a bad thing. That, in my book, is quite an accolade. Yes, there were times that they brought to mind “The Brigadoons” — and that is not a bad thing either.

I think they can go far if they work on their vocal repertoire. Their reels and jigs are ‘OK’ but don’t set them apart. A large open field is never does sound systems any favors and that was the case with this concert. They probably sound even better in an enclosed hall.

During their 10-minute intermission, unannounced, four bagpipers turned up. That was a bonus and made my day. I hadn’t heard any pipes in awhile. Three of the pipers, in blue, were from a police pipe band from South Carolina. The leader of this group, in a green shirt, was an ex-Barnstead resident who lived in a house right on the edge of the green, They only played four tunes but that was good. I wish that the Trio had done at least one song with pipes. That would have been special.

But, all in all, a great evening in Barnstead. The rain stayed away and it was the usual amicable gathering with lots of kids and dogs and most of the kids have a ball.

Irish Green from Hammacher Schlemmer for $6,000! Click to access their Webpage.

redbooth

The more famous British red available from multiple sources for 1/2 the price! Click for this listing. Google for many more, including those on eBay.

My interest, as ever, was piqued when I got my usual e-mail ‘alert’ from (dear) Hammacher Schlemmer.

$6,000 seemed a bit stiff. I thought they sold the red ones too. Couldn’t find it on their online catalogue. But easy enough to find them at other places.

Of course I would much rather have a red.

Interesting. The green is cute.

The emphasis at Just Teazin Hair Studio is organic hair care products.

Basically a “as GREEN as we can be” hair salon.

To be honest I had never really given it much thought to going GREEN when it comes to my hair though I still plan, one of these days, to have my grey hair dyed a bright purple. Maybe this is the ideal opportunity. Christine has organic hair color. Never checked or asked if she had bright purple in organic.

I am so used to everything having chemicals. Until Christine enlightened me I have never given any thoughts to the benefits and joys of organic shampoos and conditioners.

So helping, staying and saving GREEN now extends to hair care. That is great.

Very welcoming and pleasant hair salon. Very friendly. No pressure. But the best of ALL was learning about all these organic hair care products from companies like O’right and Oway. So if you are interested in organic hair care go to “Just Teazin Hair Studio” and meet Christine.

Telephone: (603) 569-4766. 94 Bay Street in Wolfeboro.

MGB pictures will have to be attributed to ‘yours truly’.

Yes, we know where they were coming from — ‘Castle in the Clouds‘ following the ‘British Cars of New Hampshire‘ (BCNH) and JANE (Jaguar Association of New England) ‘show-and-tell’ event.

Yes, we should have gone. We are BCNH members. But it is a question of time and priorities.

The Membership Person at BCNH drew my attention to this before I even realized. Once I had told him about my ‘crazy’ life — vastly complicated by my incurable addiction to writing — he asked me, via e-mail, point-blank: “aren’t you going to be TOO BUSY to attend our events?“. He was RIGHT! I should have saved my membership dues. But that is OK. Right now, as with ‘Comet ISON‘ and Pope John XXIII’s canonization I am working on a book — Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. in September — that has a HARD deadline. So complicates matters further.

Devanee, understandably, was bummed. But, the kids understand. I feel bad for them. But they do get to go many places.

Reminded me of the tattered prayer flags you see in Nepal. Somebody must have tried to recreate that. Cute.

This was actually the first time we have been all the way up to the Summit! It was good. Very rewarding. Wonderful views.

Click for brief Wikipedia entry for Mount Major.

We have, of course, given that we have lived in Alton, N.H., since 2007, ventured on the trail — but we never made it all the way because one or more of the kids would ‘give up’. Not so yesterday, Memorial Day. Devanee, having been to a birthday party in West Alton (and having been driven there, at her request, in her 1968 Green MGB), was having a ‘down day’. So I asked Teischan what she wanted to do. She said she wanted to go on a hike. That was good. Of late, now 9, she is becoming quite the tourist — and I am delighted. Yes, we had hiked the 2.5 mile, 600′ vertical drop, ‘White House Trail‘ when we were at Canyon de Chelly. She had enjoyed that. I was going to go to my old stomping ground, ‘Locke’s Trail‘ in Gilford — which I/we used to hike often, with Ulysses, when we lived in Gilford.

On Sunday, driving Devanee to West Alton, I had seen that Mount Major was packed. Cars parked on the side of Rte 11, about 1/4 in length each way — in both directions. So that was about a mile of parked cars — not counting the 50 or so that can be accommodated in the parking lot. Lot of cars, lot of people.

So as I was driving along, which must have been around 2:30 pm (because I had to do some book work before we set forth), I said “lets do Mount Major if it isn’t full”! It wasn’t. Most people had headed home. There were people. The parking lot was full — though we did find a place. You met a fair number of people and dogs but they were spaced apart. It was DEFINITELY not like being on an escalator — which is what it must have been on Sunday.

Interesting hike — and we only did the Blue, Main Trail to the top. Most of it is a walk in the park. Then towards the end it gets STEEP and you have to scramble up some granite scrabble ledges. A bit tricky. I had already done my 2.5 mile run up and down Prospect Mountain Road that morning! But I need all the exercise I can get. So it was a bit tiring on the ol’ knees. The dogs had gone on the run too. Taking Maya, on a lead, and having the Canon T3i (around the neck), was an impediment. Could have enjoyed it much more if my hands were free. But it was fun. Deanna, despite her bad back and bad leg, made it in the end, though it was a challenge. But she enjoys being able to finish a hike — all her doctors telling her that she must walk and that she must exercise.

Definitely recommend it. It is challenging at the end but rewarding. Give it a spin. You might even see us, given that I get a feeling that we might do this again.

Oh, it was overcast and cloudy and there was always a hint of rain. Would have preferred a brighter day at the top BUT that would have made it hotter. The prospect of getting caught in the rain worried me slightly. The granite ledges, when wet, would be dangerous. Plus the Canon T3i is NOT weatherproof! Must get a weatherproof camera.
