You Would Never Have Guessed That Yesterday Was “Mother’s Day”

by Anura Guruge

The flowers section at our local supermarket, Hannaford, in Alton (N.H.).

I had to take a double take. First reaction was that something had gone wrong. Then it dawned on me. BINGO! Mother’s Day.

WOW. Every last bunch of flowers. I wonder how many came to find all the flowers gone. I guess you could write a song about that.

How many of YOU remember this or have heard it.

It Is Probably Fair To Say Today’s ‘Bouquet Of Flowers’ — July 6, 2020.

As always from MY travels of the day — but today’s travels definitely included a trip to Hannaford’s in Alton. I knew that I would be doing that during my morning walk. So, I didn’t go out of my way to snap too many pictures during my walk — just a few obligatory lilies that insisted on making their presence felt. So, the flowers at Hannaford were in bouquets. So … Nie, eh? Enjoy. Smile.

Rediscovering The Tingling, Zesty Taste Of Ginger Beer Opposed To The Tepidity Of Ginger Ale.

by Anura Guruge

Very nice & satisfying THOUGH NOT (I repeat ‘NOT’) ZERO calorie. Click to ENLARGE.

Yes, ZERO calorie per the label (if it is to be trusted). Click to ENLARGE.

Some of those who know me might find this difficult to believe, but I have not always been a ‘dipso‘. If anything, by British standards, & especially those of the late 1960s & 1970s, I started consuming alcohol very late in my life! I did not start drinking alcohol, in any form or format, until I had turned 20. In those days, if my memory is true, an adult could buy you a drink at a pub when you were 14. At 18 nearly everyone I knew & associated with drank, bar I. [And, for totally different reasons, I also refused to touch (or even go near) drugs. That was a blessing. Wow, can you picture I on drugs. That would have been scary — mainly to I.]

Anywho ….

Pre-dipso, I (living in the U.K. (of course)) drank ginger beer. And it used to be good ginger beer.

Once I moved onto alcohol I still drank ginger beer, but not to the same extent as before.

Then in 1985 I came to the U.S.

Don’t know what happened. Maybe ginger beer was not as readily available. I started drinking ‘Schweppes’ & ‘Canada Dry’ ginger ale — often with liberal helpings of whiskey (in some form).

I have continued to drink Ginger Ale — albeit Diet. It is the ONLY soda I drink.

Then last Sunday, Father’s Day, after our hikes in the North Country I was still thirsty. These days, with COVID-19, I no longer stop to get coffee. Stopped at a Hannaford & I saw some CRAFT ginger beer. Bought a bottle. WOW. WOW. It was good. Kick like a mule. Who needed alcohol. Then the wife pointed out that I was on a SUGAR HIGH.

Ahhh!

Some 38.5g of CARBS. Sacré Bleu. Wow. No wonder it felt so good. Given my near obesity I can’t afford to imbibe that many carbs. That is nearly my entire quota for a day.

So, I looked around for DIET ginger beer. They do make it, though, one brand, ‘Bundaberg‘, which is good, is NOT totally sugar-free. Reduced sugar, but sugar nonetheless. I will have to give it a miss. I am fat enough already. I need to lose 20lbs, NOT gain another 20lbs.

I tried the ‘Goslings‘ too. Not as good. Definitely flatter. Not as zesty. But, NO sugar.

I will let you. Even at 0 calories I will only drink one a day. My weight is an issue. SMILE.

90 MPH, Josh Spaulding, Local Celebrity News Editor, Now Falls Asleep At The Wheel.

by Anura Guruge

He is a local celebrity.

So, he is ABOVE THE LAW.

I am going to get into trouble just for pointing this out.

But, I have KIDS that share the same roads that Mr. Joshua Spaulding drives! Yes, that scares me.

That is ALL I am going to say.

I will let Mr. Joshua Spaulding’s OWN WORDS, IN PRINT, say it all.

The Spirit Of Christmas — A Manager At Alton’s (N.H.) ‘Hannaford Supermarket’.

This was neat. She, though a manager, was working one of the checkout lanes wearing this neat hat. She only put on the glasses when I asked her if I could take a picture.

It was good. True Christmas spirit and I am sure the ‘kids’ that work there enjoyed it.

Made my day.

Merry Christmas.

Got Flu (0.5 Fluzone HD) & Pneumonia Shots, For 2018-2019, At The Alton, N.H., Hannaford Pharmacy.

by Anura Guruge

I resisted getting the flu shot till around 2010. I was willing to roll-the-dice and take my chances. But, as I approached 60 I realized that I better pay heed to what the medical profession was advocating especially since I am very susceptible to infections.

So, far so good.

Over those 8-years, I have got my shot most often at our local, Alton Hannaford Pharmacy.

It does not get any easier or more convenient. And now they tout and honor a ZERO co-pay. So, no cost other than what they bill your insurance.

Very efficient. Very professional. Quite fast. Very little wait time. Today, they were rather buy and it took just over 30-minutes. Still easier than driving to an hospital.

Yes, I know that they don’t even KNOW what this winter’s flu virus is going to be!

Same story as last year and the year before.

The vaccine, quite literally, is a shot in the dark. Best guess, hope for the best, fingers crossed.

But in my old age and with very little blood cells, red or white, I can’t take any chances. This year for the first time I got the 65+ flu vaccine in my left arm, and for the first time ever, a pneumonia shot — the latter in the right arm. That way ‘they’ know which is which; ‘flu’ with an ‘l’ in it in the ‘l’eft arm. Clever.

More Autumnal Flowers From Alton (NH) — Very Few Words.

by Anura Guruge

I took all of these, bar the yellow lily, this afternoon at the Alton Hannaford. [The lily was at the McDonald’s across the ‘road’.] So, I am using my Sony a7 II, with the big 90mm lens, kneeling down, when I hear this voice saying: “aren’t we so lucky“. We was, of course, talking about the flowers. I had to agree.

So …

Aren’t we so lucky to have such flowers ….

Not one from our our yard, for a welcome break for you. The potted Mum with the pumpkin was taken on our road — from within a Jag, albeit a topless one. The rest, as were those from September 21, 2017, were all at HannafordAltonNew Hampshire.

As a collage!
