If you are self-employed or unemployed like me, it has been real difficult to get affordable health insurance — given that I have a litany of per-existing conditions.

Yes, we are all lucky in NH that we do have ‘NH Health Plan’ as catch-all, fall back, but it is expensive. I now basically have catastrophic insurance with a $10,000 deductible. Though there is a significant difference in premium, most years it doesn’t really make a difference whether it is $5,000 or $10,000. They don’t make it easy for you to get past the deductible. I went for a couple of years without insurance. Then Dartmouth Hitchcock (Concord) told me I had might have all sorts of things wrong with me. I could envisage $60,000 a year bills. So, I got coverage.

We in NH desperately need these exchanges to give us a modicum of competition. Without competition the insurance companies are raping us, at will and with glee.

I am not that happy with Obamacare. President Obama sold us down the river. I don’t bother to explain what proper healthcare should be to people around here. I think it is the healthcare that they have received. They seem to be pathologically incapable of understanding that healthcare doesn’t have to be run by for profit insurance companies. C’est la vie. I just want competition.

So I am hoping that the new Democratic Governor doesn’t also sell us short. She gets excellent coverage, either from the State or through her husband’s plan at Exeter College.
