The views from the TOP before I got lost.

It has been 27-years since I lost got lost in New Hampshire. Given the amount of walking/hiking I do, I consider that not a bad record.

Kind of crazy. Had a premonition all morning that I was going to get LOST! Maybe I set out to get lost.

Patchy snow cover. So, I couldn’t always follow my tracks.

The map on my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro is too small and NO bloody good with my eyesight. Yes, my fault.

I had GPS and Google MAPS on my phone (Google Pixel 4) and it showed me where I was heading. But, the terrain was not helpful and I felt I was going the wrong way. It was slippery and heavily wooded. I did not want to hurt myself. That would be have complicated matters. So, I called ‘911’.

They were very nice and I offered to pay. They didn’t come into the woods to get me out. SMILE. They also did not have a GPS that showed them where I was at any given time.

They basically talked me out. Had the two dogs with I. I had to make Braxton bark. They would listen to his bark when we were in range. That is how we walked out — way on the other side of where I had gone in. How did I get Braxton to bark. I would have to tie him to a tree and walk away. He would bark. Not ideal, but that was the only way. I never went far, and he could see me. So, he wasn’t really scared. He saved the day. The Golden doesn’t bark if I am around! She is just happy.

So, that was quite the adventure. ‘They’ were very nice. I knew a couple of them. Need to get a better Compass APP for my phone.

This New ‘Linq’ People Locator — That Works Without Cell Service — Has Tremendous Potential; I Might Have To Get Some.

by Anura Guruge

Very interesting & exciting product. Real DUMB marketing. Calling it a ‘People Compass‘ is totally & bloody misleading.

It is a PEOPLE LOCATOR that works without cell connectivity, phones, APPs or FEES.

That is HUGE for I.

Why?

I am usually walking/hiking in areas without cell service. If something happens to I, I am screwed. This is a very real concern.

This this they could find me if I am not back in x-hours.

Plus, when my daughter and I go hiking we invariably lose each other and spend hours looking for each other. This will eliminate that problem.

We even get lost at Walmart.

Basically an electronic leash for folks like I that wander off.

Tad expensive BUT I think it is worth it. Great safety feature as far as I am concerned. Small enough that I can always have it on me.

I am going to check it out.

It is being shown at CES 2020 — which is how I heard about it.

Still can’t believe that they call it a ‘People Compass’. That is so STUPID. They should let me do their marketing. SMILE.

Canyon de Chelly Anura Guruge White House Ruin

Another picture from the ‘White House’ Ruins. The ruins are to the left, behind the fence — at the back. This is looking down towards the trail (at top), the dried riverbed further to the right. On the way back I walked the riverbed. I have a video of hiking down to these ruins — the only hike you can do without a licensed Navajo guide.

P.S., Notice the unmistakable ‘Planet of the Apes‘ figure on the rock face — right in the middle.

The last two posts in this month+ series on Canyon de Chelly, after our latest visit in July 2018, I have featured ‘Spider Rock‘ — the most spectacular sight at the Monument. This is a picture of its top.

Next to the much visited ‘White House’ ruins (the only place you can hike down to on your own without a Navajo guide), ‘Spider Rock‘ is the most iconic feature of this words-just-can’t-do-it-justice National Monument. I have posted other pictures of ‘Spider Rock‘. This was an attempt to be more creative.

In this series of posts I have been trying to share with you both the unsurpassed splendor and the history of this incredible Canyon in Arizona. I have done quite a few posts about the ‘White House’ ruins — the most famous of the Canyon de Chelly ruins — including a video on the hike down to it. This is a picture taken towards the end of the trail, close to the ruin.

As I pointed out in yesterday’s post, horses, both tame and feral, are a feature of this tranquil and beautiful Canyon. We saw quite a few in our travels. These two were when we hiked down to the famous ‘White House’ ruin. The drought is taking a toll on the horses. You can tell from these pictures. We heard on the radio that upward of 400 had died of thirst!
