List Of ALL The Catholic Cardinals That Have Resigned Their Cardinalate Since 1900.

by Anura Guruge

That is IT. I kid you NOT. Just 2 really. The other 2 still got, inexplicably, to keep their title ‘cardinal’. It really is CRAZY.

People just don’t believe this. Hence why I keep on trying to impress this hard fact on folks.

When the media talks about cardinals resigning they are INVARIABLY just referring to their ‘day job’ & NOT of their sacrosanct cardinalate.

Got it? You sure. I hope so.

I insist on subscribing to the printed versions of BOTH the “National Geographic” & the companion “History” magazines. They are both naturals for I.

I like “History”. They always have multiple articles that catch my attention — & I invariably learn a lot. And that I love.

Good article. Some interesting insights into the politics & one accident. IF this chapter of history intrigued you, you must read this article.

‘The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey’ By Rinker Buck — Interesting, But Not As Compelling As I Had Hoped.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access Amazon book listing.

I had seen this book at a bookstore during our trip to ‘Moosehead Lake‘, Maine in April, but bought it, used, from Amazon as is my wont with books like this.

The ‘Oregon Trail’ and all stories of the 19th century Western migration intrigues I mainly because I was lucky enough to have read a few very compelling books on the topic, ket among them: James Michener’sCentennial‘, Irvin Stone’s mesmerizing ‘Men to Match My Mountains‘ and J.S. Holliday’s ‘The World Rushed In‘.

Well, I am glad I read this book. I learnt a LOT, about the history of the trail, about mules (that I knew next to nothing about), the seemingly incredible ‘Buck’ family and some American history. Given that I am a history buff (in my old age) this book had some wonderful information and insights.

But, this book left me ‘hungry’ — and a lot of that, quite literally, was because Rinker was so stingy with his details of how and what they ate! I kid you not. I was hoping that this would be more of a trail diary — maybe a journal. Lots of stuff, on a daily basis, about what they did, what they saw, how they got from A-to-B, what they ATE, where they slept etc. Well, there isn’t that much of it as I would have liked. That was the let down. It was also sparse on the exact route they took — whether they were on main roads, back country roads, dirt roads etc. I got two maps (below) to try and and follow the trail. I also used Google Maps.

It was OK. Obviously it was a bestseller. So, he obviously hit on the right formula. Good for him.

Yes, I will recommend it with a slight hesitation. Do what I did. Pick up a used copy. That way you won’t feel as bad if you felt let down by the entire trip narrative. SMILE.

Today, March 7, Is Credited As The Day That ‘Current’ Monopoly Was ‘Created’ By Charles Darrow.

by Anura Guruge

A quick Google will show that there are claims that March 7, 1933 was when Monopoly, as we know it today, came to be. I also happened to hear ‘this’ on the radio which what got me to go looking.

Yes, there is an extensive ‘History of Monopoly‘ on Wikipedia. That entry, however, does not mention March 7, 1933. So, I am a bit confused and skeptical.

But, I wanted to make sure that I at least got a ‘scratch’ in the sand, just in case.

So, I am posting this with a caveat. This might or might not be true!

Once again NO IMAGE of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

His image appeared in the Google Doodle 2012 – 2016
as well as in 2009, 2010 & 2006.

Not having his image is beginning to seem strange.

Doodle only appearing in the U.S.

It is based on a true story. There really was an Abdul Karim that struck up quite the relationship with Queen Victoria. Click this image to access the Wikipedia entry for the REAL Abdul Karim.

The MUST WATCH trailer on YouTube.

We were going to watch Season 1 of the PBS “Victoria” on Amazon Prime when I saw this. We had seen the trailer earlier in the year and had DEFINITELY wanted to see it. So, without hesitation, I rented it, in HD format (for the customary 48-hours) for $5.99 from Amazon. I am so glad that I did. It was excellent.

Definitely my cup of Earl Grey. All the things that resonate with I: British life, the British Commonwealth, British Raj, history and period drama. That it was Judi Dench was a bonus.

Loved it. Incredibly funny. Touchingly cute. And as we British would contend, “warms the cockles of your heart“.

It said at the start that it was a “true story — or most of it”. That made it even more special. I have since discovered that it is indeed so, though the movie, no doubt, took some poetic licenses.

Highly, highly recommended. Ideal movie for these days. Reminds you what loyalty and service is all about.

Set us up, nicely, for Season 2 of “Victoria“, on PBS, in January 2018.

Not one BUT TWO (2) milestones on August 31,

These were, however, the Harrier PROTOTYPES —
the Hawker Siddeley P.1227,

Crusader Rule Of The Holy Land Came To An End This Day 726-Years Ago; May 28, 1291.

by Anura Guruge

That was the fall of Acre,
a strategic sea-port,
in the North of the Holy Land.

An event that goes uncommented now given that so much water has flown under the bridges on the Tiber since then — over 700-year ago.

But, a turning point in both political and religious history.

The crusades were quite the thing. The fall of Acre was a body blow to those in the West.

So, on this Memorial Day weekend, spare a thought for how the Crusades to Jerusalem came to an end.

Fortunately, and possibly because there is so much else wrong, I have been spared AS YET! But like with diabetes it is probably just a matter of time.

As you can see above, from my 2015 book “Orgasms: 101 Facts & Trivia“, I am NOT a big fan of any of these ED treatments in that they do NOT address the crucial AROUSAL aspect.

Ironically the ‘Female Viagra‘ addresses that!

The ‘Tenerife Airport Disaster’, The Deadliest Aviation Accident Ever, Happened This Day 40-Years Ago; March 27, 1977.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read. Wikipedia link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenerife_airport_disaster

I remember it well.

It got a lot of media coverage in the U.K. — 27 of those killed having been British.

I was, even more so that I am now, an ‘airplane junkie’ — who was fascinated by the dynamics of aviation accidents. I was also, in those days, a very frequent flyer — especially in 747s, having flown on one for the first time in 1970.

This was a horrendous accident. Unlikely we will ever see anything like it again. Technology really has come a long way in those 40 years.
