#51. The Genie does NOT tell you that you already have a ‘program’ recorded when you go to record it again. I discovered this to my cost last night. I programmed it to record a movie. A few minutes later when I was going through my recorded list I found that I had, indeed, recorded that movie last week. But, it was still in my queue to be recorded again. The DISH DVR ignored just duplicate efforts.

#52. I still can’t work out how to immediately get to ‘LIVE TV’ if I rewind a program and then want to jump right back to what is currently showing. DISH had a ‘watch live’ button.

#53. The Genie remote has yellow, green and blue buttons that do not seem to do anything — and as such is just taking up space on the remote.

#54. I got another annoying e-mail this morning ‘Welcoming me to DirecTV’ and telling me to call if I have any problem — albeit with no mention that they might try to charge me $5 to fix their problems.

#55. Since I don’t want to get whacked with a $5 charge I e-mailed DirecTV this morning telling them my remote doesn’t work. Nothing back from them as yet.

#46. The Genie HR-34 definitely has issues with sound, the huge fluctuations in volume, from program to program, is beyond insane.

#47. DirecTV has stuck a stupid ‘IEDA’ channel, that just appears to run (rather tame) bra-fitting infomercials, in between the two History channels — which is very annoying and stupid on the part of DirecTV.

#48. DirecTV has added a ‘Wimbledon mix‘ channel, close to CNN on 202 — but when I accessed it yesterday evening it said that there was no programming on it!

#49. I have definitely come to the conclusion that the Genie HR-34 was not beta-tested (i.e., tested by customers) prior to it being sold to suckers like me — what I seem to be doing is beta-testing this incredibly poorly designed and implemented box, for free, for DirecTV. Do NOT, I stress, DO NOT, get the Genie. It is an untested box with lots of technical bugs.

#50. ‘The Tips & Tricks’ brochure that I got with the Genie HR-34 (albeit with the cover ripped off by the installer) is way out-of-date and appears to refer to a prior machine!

#41. The volume when you change programs or pop-up your ‘List’ or ‘Channels’ functions fluctuates, with no rhyme or reason, in a very distracting and annoying manner.

#42. CNN on Channel 202 is all by itself when all of the other ‘Cable News’, i.e., MSNBC, CNBC, Fox, Bloomberg, are in the 350 range. So I can’t just use Channel Up/Down to surf through the news channels like I could do with DISH.

#43. Each time I watch a recorded show on the Genie I am struck by how slow it is (#36). This is not funny. The bloody thing hardly seems capable of moving. It is beyond slow. I have only had it for a week and I hate it.

#44. I got an e-mail from DirecTV yesterday about TIPS on how to use my service, but there was NOT a single useful thing in that whole e-mail. Just a waste of my time.

#45. Last night, for what I think is the 3rd time (#31 & #21), I couldn’t get the downstairs remote to work. Had to take out the batteries and start again. Not good.

#36. Don’t ever believe anybody who tells you, or anything you read online, that the DirecTV Genie is slow. That is a bold face lie. The DirecTV genie is NOT SLOW. It is bloody catatonic!

#37. Fast Forward (FF) on the bloody Genie is so, so, so, so, slow and lethargic that I have to always double, triple check the progress bar at the bottom to see if it is moving and in many cases it is not. That is how slow it is. At its ‘x4’ speed, i.e., the maximum, it is probably going at 1.5x times the normal play speed. 

#38. Once you Fast Forward (or Rewind) and then go back to normal play mode, it takes eons for the sound to kick in. So much so that you have to rewind back a bit to catch up with the sound.

#39. The Genie recorded ’40 minutes’ of a movie for me last night — and while it could have been my fault, i.e., hitting record on a movie that was already playing, it, despite its penchant for popping up the most useless and inane confirmation messages (#32), sure did not ask me to confirm that I was just recording the remainder of a movie — because if it had, I would have said ‘NO’.

#40. This morning, on my Genie Mini, I got a message saying that it could not find a server and asking me to select a server. But, when I hit the button that said, SELECT SERVER, it just told me no server found! Of course I have a server. But it was a useless, annoying dialog. I just recycled power on it and it came back fine.

#31. Took me 5 attempts to wake up the lethargic Genie this evening. Probably the damn remote — which started giving me problems yesterday (#21).

#32. Why does the Genie expect an ‘OK’ confirmation when it is woken-up from power save hibernation. Just get on with it. Just flash the message saying it has restarted and get on with it.

#33. DirecTV tried to charge me $5 on Saturday when I wanted to talk to a Customer Service Rep. about the PIP problem I was having. I hung up, called again and started by saying I had a billing issue — which I also had. Those calls are free.

#34. I got bill through the mail yesterday, though I had signed up for paperless billing — and this, furthermore, 2 days after they had already charged my credit card for the full amount of the bill.

#35. As I described in this post I hung up on four (4) DirecTV reps when I was trying to get a price on what my DirecTV service would cost me.

Appears that I am not the only DirecTV Genie customer who has run into the ‘No Sound‘ on some channels problem.

Well, given that I know a fair amount about A/V I actually know what causes the problem and how to fix it.

The problem, at least in my case, has to do with me using HDMI for my HD connection.

The problem has to do with switching to a Standard Definition (SD) channel after watching a High Definition (HD) channel. It might not happen each and every time, but if you are without sound the chances are that you are HDMI connected and just switched to a SD channel from an HD channel.

OK. This is a well know problem within HDMI circles. Yes, DirecTV should have fixed it, but then again pigs should be able to fly.

There is no simple or elegant solution. Yes, maybe you can turn off everything and power-up while still on the SD channel. That should work. But, that is aggravating.

A more strategic solution is to run a RCA red/white audio cable from the RCA video/audio out plugs from the back of the Genie to a RCA audio/video input on your ‘sound box’. Yes, you will have to SELECT that on the ‘sound box’ to get sound!

Yes, not fun, but as I have found out to my intense cost, nothing related to DirecTV is fun. That is why I hate, really hate, detests DirecTV. I even set up a countdown clock to tell me how much time is left on my DirecTV contract.

#26. No sound last night on ‘Military Channel’, #287, and the two channels below it. Same problem I had had with Channel 203 Sunday night. 

#27. A Google of ‘No Sound‘ problem (above) reveals that it is a well known problem and has to do with Standard Definition (SD) channels on an HDMI-connected High Definition configuration. See Google search results below.

#28. The installed who appeared decent enough LIED to me explicity about EXACTLY this problem because I asked him about it, using HDMI, SD, HD terminology and he said that ‘no, no, you won’t have any sound problems using HDMI‘. Like so many others associated with DirecTV he lied to me point-blank.

#29. The frigging DirecTV Genie only has one set of RCA audio/video, i.e., the yellow, red, white plugs, output, so I have to disconnect my DVD recorder so as to fix the damn ‘No Sound’ problem by having a parallel audio connection. DirecTV stinks.

#30. DirecTV does not supply a booklet of anything that shows a diagram of the Genie back panel so that I could work out how to fix the bloody ‘No Sound’ problem. Yes, I can find the damn picture on the Web but that doesn’t help me much, at 11:30 pm at night, when I am on my hands and knees behind the accursed DirecTV HR-34 Bloody Genie.

#21. Last night the downstairs’ remote for the Genie stopped working … now I have to pound it on a table and jiggle the device select slider before it will work! The remote controller is not even 5 days old.

#22. I still haven’t found a way to do a search directly from the Guide, without having to hit INFO and then fiddle around looking for ‘Upcoming’ etc. With DISH you could just hit the search button whenever and it automatically populated the search field with the program that was selected on the guide, the program you were watching or even a program on the list (depending on where you were). Now that is SMART search. 

#23. The information displayed when scrolling through the Guide is not enough. With DISH you got at least two more lines of information which precluded having to make another step to get more information on the program.

#24. Ok, so you can playback YouTube videos but the DVR controls (eg. stop, FF, REV) do not appear to work with YouTube.

#25. When looking through the Guide for a series, say Discovery Channel’sFast N’ Loud‘, the brief ‘info’ at top does not tell you the year or episode number. With DISH you got both, so I could work out whether I had seen that episode.

I set up a Countdown Clock because I can’t wait to CANCEL my DirecTV account.

#16. I now have PIP on my main 47″ TV (that is directly connected to the Genie HR 34) but not on my 27″ HD (connected to a Genie Mini) in our bedroom.

#17. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10) though he actually commented about my Philips ‘Sound Bar’, and we spoke about audio via HDMI, did NOT set the Genie audio option to Dolby 5.1 though, of course, I have Dolby 5.1 on my Sound Bar — which is what delivers all my audio.

#18. No sound last night on Channel 203!

#19. DirecTV, on Saturday, less than a day after the installation, tried to charge me $5 to speak to an operator!

#20. I found a big, long bolt, on my driveway yesterday, where the DirecTV installer had parked his unmarked, open truck, this bolt obviously having fallen off that truck — the bolt right where it could have got embedded in the wheels of one of our vehicles necessitating a tire repair.

#11. Frigging PIP has disappeared from the ‘info’ bar. So NO PIP again. Did I tell you that I really, really, really despise DirecTV?

#12. I get my first bill, in my e-mail, 6 hours AFTER they charge my credit-card. So they first charge my credit card, then send me a bill. Nice.

#13. Other than the Super Bowl we don’t watch ‘Football’ (just don’t have the time). I have now tried 3 times, by phone, to cancel my ‘NHL Sunday Ticket‘ BUT they won’t let me!

#14. Though I have told them TWICE that I don’t want it, my bill (#11) informs me that they will be charging me $7.99 for a protection plan next month!

#15. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10), and said that he had worked for DirecTV for 14 years, set my bedroom ‘Genie Mini‘ just for 480p, though the TV is 720p, and when I asked him said that it would automatically adjust. It didn’t BECAUSE he did not have the settings at ‘Native’ or have the 720p box ticked! Pretty poor.
