Looks like we are going to luck out. The weather for all three days, Friday to Sunday looks good. The so called ‘chance of rain’ on Sunday is for early morning. It, if it actually happens given the 35% probability, will have ceased by the time the “Games” start on Sunday — really around 11 am, if not noon. Actually Sunday with its (average) 69°F appeals to me compared to the 81°F. Yes, indeed, it can get too hot.

Over the 17 games we have attended, 15 at Loon, I have seen it all. At least 2 hurricanes, maybe three and the weekend of 9/11. And one of the hurricanes, if I recall right, was in 1999, BEFORE we had a ‘Performance Tent’. That was WET. They re-scheduled the Friday concert at the Lincoln High School — and refused to issue any new tickets. We still got to see it — though we hadn’t bought tickets, beforehand, because we knew that we were going to get pummeled by a hurricane. I then remember another Sunday when there was an announcement over the PA system that an event scheduled at a golf course that morning had to be cancelled because there were ducks swimming on the course. And the weekend of 9/11 was also dreary in MULTIPLE ways — the one MEMORABLE highlight being ‘The BrigadoonsDenis Carr who sang ‘Amazing Grace‘, with so much poignancy, SO MANY times, basically on-demand, during that weekend. Thank YOU, Denis. Without YOU that weekend would have been a bust.

2006 was Teischan’s first ‘Games’. She was ‘0’ years old having been born on March 22, 2006. We used to, in those days, go up to Loon for the whole weekend. We took her, Saturday morning, from the condo we were staying at in ‘Lincoln Station’ with a garbage bag over her stroller. So this ‘Games’ really will be a walk in the park.

ENJOY. See you there. Remember, I am the brown guy. Not many of us around. So I should not be hard to spot. Buy me a drink or better still a sausage roll. SMILE. Cheers.

We Dodged Another Recession. 4Q 2012 GDP Was Positive. Barely. The Bare Minimum. But, Positive. So No Blizzard Related Recession.

See that little blip at the very right. ‘0.1’. That was 4Q 2012 GDP. Never mind that it was 0.1, the smallest number that they can report. It was positive. We are in the clear for another quarter. Click to ENLARGE.

I had been meaning to write about this for 11 days since the REVISED 4Q GDP for the U.S. was released on February 28, 2013 — the day that the old pope, Benedict XVI (#266) officially resigned and left the Vatican. Suffice to say I have been crazy busy with pope stuff and continue to be.

I was waiting for the number. I was lying in bed, drinking my coffee, with CNBC on. When the number came in I gagged, more out of amusement than anything else.

I am so glad that after 4 years in power the Obama White House has finally come to realize that these are THEIR NUMBERS and a little bit of steaming, if not outright cooking, is OK — even expected. What is the point of being in power if you don’t abuse it — a bit.

The initial, first-cut reading of 4Q GDP, given Hurricane Sandy, at been negative. That was not good. Two quarters of back-to-back negative GDPs and we are automatically in a recession.

I was worried that the Blizzard Nemo might do to 1Q 2013 what Sandy had done to 4Q. That would have meant a recession. Not good for any of us, politically or financially.

But, common sense obviously prevailed in D.C., particularly at the W.H. Revise the 4Q GDP to 0.1%.

Everybody is now happy. It is positive. Even if 1Q 2013 comes in negative we are in the clear — since 2Q looks ‘OK’, sequestration or no sequestration.

Stock market is doing good, though my son, the new stock market wizard (with impressive results), got me to short the market on Friday. I indulged him, as I am wont to do. What is the point of having kids if you don’t indulge them. Of course there has to be a correction soon. So he will be proved right. Question is how much money we would have made by shorting. I, being poor, didn’t ‘bet’ that much. Don’t have the money. He was betting 2.5 times more than me. I am happy. I am the one who told him, about a year ago, that he, given the way his brain works, will be good at stocks. After a shaky start he is looking impressive. I could see a Guruge Hedge Fund in the future. That would be a riot. The ONLY other Sri Lankan I know who had a hedge fund is now in jail! But, Matthew has a different pedigree.

I happened to catch this clip, on ‘Morning Joe‘, on MSNBC, this morning.

I had to watch it over and over again. I was lying in bed (as I am wont to do in the morning), clutching my cup of coffee (kindly provided by my dear wife). I had to put the cup down (on its electric heater) because I was in paroxysms of laughter. It just cracked me up. I laughed, I laughed and I laughed a bit more. Oh, Jon Stewart. I like his stuff on the pope too. I post that on my pope blog. All the good Catholics that read that blog, and we are talking 3,000 a day, dare not visit any joke, uncatholic sites. But, it is OK if they watch it on my site, because mine is a pope site. So, I do this as a public service. Put all the pertinent joke videos on my blog. Whatever anybody says, I always aim to make people happy. But, poor ol’ Mormon Mitt. I am sorry, but he just makes me laugh and all of those that rally though that he could beat my man, my President.

Click to access MILEAGE SPECIFIC Kia site.

Mileage for the 2WD Automatic (though with a really COOL manual override that you can use as a normal stick) Sportage. CLICK to access complete chart.

I am ashamed to confess that I don’t know whether I have the 2.0L or the 2.4L. We actually didn’t have a choice. The lease price I sought was only available on two specific Sportages they had in stock — one white, one black. We picked the white.

I think we might have the 2.4L.

That the 2.4L gets better mileage than the 2.0L isn’t as counter-intuitive as you would think. The 2.0L will have to work harder, especially with a/c. So the new revised mileage is between 28 and 30 mpg. I believe that. I can get around 29.3 mpg.

Got an e-mail to this effect last night saying that they will fix any ‘Sandy’ related damages to Kias at a discount.

Since we lucked out, I deleted the e-mail. But, I now realized that there will be others that should make use of this offer. I, however, can’t find it on the Web! Hhhmmm.

But, if you do have a Hyundai or Kia that got damaged in the storm contact your dealership and see what they have to say. Your insurance company might know something about this too. All this said, you probably do know that the costs and estimates for body work on cars is a moveable feast. They manipulate the estimate to suit the insurance needs. So …

Hurricane Sandy: Alton Central School (ACS) Closing & Lack Of Phone Notification

Alton Central School (ACS) closed for the day on Monday, October 29, ahead of Sandy.

Given that the safety of the kids is the #1, #2 & #3 priority of all concerned, I have NO problem with that. That was fine, though the heavy rain and winds didn’t kick in till about 4pm Monday.

I assume that the decision was made by the new Superintendent. IF SO, I hope he is as diligent about school closing and delayed start when we have SNOW.

We live off Prospect Mountain Road, and the school bus that serves us has to go down Water Street and up Muchado.

I have seen the school bus go down Water St. SIDEWAYS, more than once — with no traction and obviously no control, despite the automated chains! Yes, the bus has got stuck in snow on Muchado.

But, at least in the past, there was a cavalier attitude about ‘snow days’ — the excuse being that they would have to make it up in June. So, we also then get the ‘delayed start’ and ‘early release’ game play — because those don’t count as ‘snow days’. My point is simple, IF they closed yesterday, can we also CLOSE when we have snow so that I don’t have to watch the school bus go down Water Street SIDEWAYS? Though I am a fairly hardy person, and nothing much phases me, seeing a school bus sliding down a hill is not a pleasant sight. Yes, we did call up and complain.

We did not receive any telephone notification on Sunday that ACS was to be closed Monday.

Last school year, we would get 3 phone calls (house line, my cell, Deanna’s cell) every time somebody sneezed at ACS — with the phone calls always timed to perfect for 7pm.

On Sunday there were no calls.

Deanna just happened to check her e-mail late Sunday night. Usually I too get an e-mail, but I must be black-listed, or at least brown-listed, because I write posts such as these. C’est la vie.

Monday night Deanna called the school to see if there was a message about Tuesday. NADA.

Kind of strange all together. Yes, Deanna called and talked to somebody about it today.

Weather forecast for Alton, NH from the fairly reliable ‘wunderground.com’. Click to access.

Yes, we got a lot of rain. Not sure how much. Deanna and Devanee say that our rain gauge, that was supposedly emptied prior to Sandy, says 4″ to 4.4″. That is respectable.

Yes, we had lots of wind gusts. Some pretty spectacular. The trees were bending, but nothing like they did when we had the tornado in 2009.

The lights flickered from noon till 11pm.

BUT, we didn’t lose power. I am in shock. We usually lose power IF a butterfly flaps it wings too hard! I was all set to lose power. Gassed up the two generators and moved them up to the front of the garage so that I wouldn’t have to move the van, as I usually have to do, to get them out. Even checked the oil and topped it up. Since I take care of the generator for my 80-year old neighbor, Jeannine, I even went and plugged her ‘self-start’ battery-in so that it would be fully charged. She has a fancy, orange Genrac. Start it with a key. If the battery is charged it is a joy to operate. Mine are much more low tech. Next time around I will get a big, wired-in Genrac.

Thank YOU PSNH. Take a bow. You did good.

The lights flickered from 1pm till 11:20pm. That drove me nuts. I try not to let too many things get under my skin, but I realized yesterday that flickering lights get under my skin. Part of it was that I was waiting for the power to go down. Though I have a big ‘uninterrupted power supply’ (UPS) on my main PC, I decided to close down shop around 4:20. Had one BIG post to do with the pope becoming the 5th oldest pope, as of 1400, to post before I gave up for the day.

We didn’t have Internet around 8pm. Deanna and the kids tried to see whether Alton Central School (ACS) was to be open Tuesday. They had no Internet. I wasn’t too phased. I expected that TDS would have some routing issues with the disruption in New York City. This morning I checked my TDS bandwidth (using my usual ‘speedtest.net‘). Perfect. Thank YOU, TDS.

But, I know that Sandy is revisiting us, this time from the North. The winds and rain should be less, but …

That will probably be Wednesday night and Thursday. As far as I know Alton is still having Halloween Night on Wednesday, 4:00 pm till ‘dark’; i.e., 5 or 5:30pm.

Alton Central School Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Deanna sent me this flyer and told me to post. So here. Click to ENLARGE.

I will keep you posted.

In terms of weather, it looks like there is an equal chance of rain showers (in the morning/afternoon) on both days; Saturday being much warmer than Sunday. No hurricanes, however. That is always a plus; having done the games twice during or right after an hurricane; the first time before that had the ‘Concert Tent’, which came to be the next year after the chaos of trying to put on a show without enough covered area. [Yes, we even got dragged to the school in Lincoln for a performance!]

But, Saturday’s tend to be packed and you pay $15 MORE per ticket (adults only, kids always free) for the privilege. Yes, they have the Clan Parade and Massed Bands — but as I have already stated there isn’t a great slate of marching bands this year. Sunday, post 4pm, you also get all the hard-to-resist ‘give away’ sales at the food booths. Yes, I love those. Three sausage rolls $5 as opposed to $4.50 for one. We are still torn as to whether to go on Saturday or Sunday. Going today, Friday, was no longer an option because of school. We like Fridays — less crowds, full program of bands and the sheep dogs.

Celtica, supposedly the featured band for 2012, is also only playing Friday and Saturday. I went and found them on YouTube. They sound OK … shades of ‘Seven Nations‘ and a toned-downRed-Hot Chilli Pipers‘ (who made it rather clear last year that they were not coming back). Despite what the organizers like to tell us, groups as soon as they get a name stop coming to Loon. This by all accounts is considered a ‘small’ show of little consequences.

After about 3 minutes of Celtica, I realized what was missing. No vocals. Then it cracked me up. Read the first comment on YouTube against the above video: ‘Celtica needs vocals‘. I concur. I think 40 minutes of them on top of Albannach will get tedious. I think I have seen both Searson and Hardrian’s Wall before, but I am holding up hope for them.

Scheduling continues to deteriorate and confound. On Saturday they have Albannach playing in the ‘Concert Tent’ at the same time as the Clan Parade and Roll-Call. This is stupid. I have seen them do this before. This is not fair to anybody. People are conflicted and you have the group and the bands on the Parade Ground competing for sound with each other. Plus during the speeches, even if there are solemn moments, you have Albannach pounding away behind you.

On Saturday, my perennially favorite The Brigadoons don’t get a slot in the ‘Concert Tent’. Yes, I know they are old and have been playing there continuously for 20 odd years. But, they still represent quintessential, unadulterated Celtic music. They represent the tradition, the roots, the essence. They still draw a faithful crowd.

All said I am getting increasingly disillusioned by organization of the Highland Games at Loon, and given that I have been attending since 1998 (only missing one, and that was because I could not take it when it was at the dirt and cow manure in Hopkington) I think I am entitled to a say. It is not complacency. There is some cynicism. They are selling us old rope knowing that there are so many who love the games. So they don’t see a need to reinvigorate, to rejuvenate. I wish they would make a concerted attempt to make the games bigger and better. I will do a report card after we get back.

I saw a query here about parking. Unless you have VIP credentials you are not going to be able to park in or near the Loon complex. Period. Parking on Rte 112 (Main St.)/Kancamagus Highway is not permitted for miles before and after Loon; it is taped off, by the police (and strictly enforced). Yes, in 1998, I parked right next to the Loon bridge on the road. The next year I talked an attendant into letting me park inside Loon. Those days are gone. Park-and-Ride is the only way to do it, unless you are a VIP. There are at least 3 ‘Park-and-Ride’ sites — starting at the I-93 exit. We use the last one — by the ‘Inn Season’ hotel and Lincoln Shopping Center; but we haven’t been to the games on a Saturday in a long time. So not sure whether it gets full, though it, encompassing 3 fields, is HUGE.

Click to see ‘The Brigadoons’ at Loon in 2011 (on YouTube) sans my ‘buddy’ Jackie (electric bass) who passed away a couple of years ago. Miss Jackie. Chatting with him was the highlight of MY games.
