MY West Indies, ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20, Champions 2016!

by Anura Guruge

westindies2016wint20

I watched the entire game, every single ball, LIVE. I got out of bed at 9am (crack of dawn for me) to make sure that I was downstairs, in front of my 47″ HDTV screen, ready for the match.

It was one heck of a game. Towards the end, it was so good, I really didn’t care who won.

But you have to admit that the 51% to 49% in favor of West Indies that I predicted two days ago truly reflected the outcome and the match.

Do I regret my scathing comments on Marlon Samuels. Not really. He did OK. But that is what he is payed to do. Let’s not forget that. HE did NOT win the match. Carlos Brathwaite WON the match. 19 off the last over (a T20 final record) would have been beyond Marlon’s reach or for that matter most of the others in the team. So do NOT tell me that Samuels got the Windies to victory. His innings was scratchy. Yes, he held it together but he didn’t score fast enough.

In many ways it was a FLUKE victory. Four 6s in a row. That was a lot to ask for.

But in the end I am delighted. Happy for the likes of Carlos. Made my day. Glad I watched it live.

GRIN.

ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20, Final: England vs. West Indies — Who Will Make Who Grovel?

I only had it 50% right. I said back on Monday, March 28, 2016, way ahead of the Semi Finals that it would most likely be India vs. England.

That India lost at home, by 7 wickets — albeit with just 2 balls to spare is pretty hard to fathom, even now. Lendl Simmons, Johnson Charles & Andre Russell batted as if possessed. That was quite the performance.

In the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s a West Indies vs. England final would be a foregone conclusion before it started — the West Indies were bound to win.

Not so anymore especially with this ‘squad’. On paper, head-to-head, the Windies have way more experience, in the likes of Gayle, Bravo, Sammy, Ramdin, and some explosive firepower (as the Indians saw). But this squad is also famous for crumpling and ‘going-to-pieces’ under pressure. I also worry that the amazing, unexpected WIN against India sapped too much emotional energy out of them. Basically that they will be spent.

England, in the likes of Joe Root, Jos Butler, Ben Stokes, does have some amazing capability. And unlike the West Indies their temperament is more consistent and sound.

Only takes one GREAT innings in T20 to take a match away from the competition. Gayle or Stokes could play that.

I just hope that the West Indies do NOT play  Marlon ‘Girlie-Boy‘ Samuels. He is a waste of a berth on the squad. Play (poor) Jason Holder. A 25% fit Holder is likely to be better than the mentally scarred Samuels. Do NOT get me wrong. I used to adore Marlon. It is just that he no longer can play cricket!

Not sure we can expect another blinder from Lendl Simmons again. That was an innings of a lifetime.

On edge I am favoring the West Indies 51% to 49%.

WOW. WOW. WOW.

What a match. After another amazing innings by Virat ‘Midas’ Kohli and 192 on the board I thought that India had it sealed and that my prediction, even from this morning, of the ‘Battle of the Raj‘, India v. England, was going to the Final of the ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20.

When Gayle went for 5, after 6 balls, I was convinced the Windies were screwed. Then Marlon ‘Bloody’ Samuels, yet again, played like girl having her first period and wracked by cramps.

I have always LIKED Lendl Simmons BUT had forgotten about him. He hadn’t played in any of the previous matches. I thought we was on the field as a sub. And he dropped a catch. But Lendl CAN BAT — as he demonstrated.

And Johnson Charles and Andre Russell. They didn’t even need Bravo or Sammy. AMAZING.

I did say, on Monday, that for the West Indies to beat India, at home, somebody would have to score 70+ of 180+. Lendl Simmons came close; 82 at 161 S/R. Andre Russell batted at 215 S/R.

Now the BIG question … did the Windies play their ONE BIG innings of the tournament. Will they have any gas in the tank for the Final on April 3?

It will be fascinating.

Thank YOU the West Indies. Sorry for the all the BAD things I have said about you in the last year. SMILE.

England Victorious Over New Zealand — Take A Bow — ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20.

by Anura Guruge

engvicnz

Well a “Battle of the Raj”,  ‘India v England‘, ICC World Twenty20 final can still be on the cards (and I have NOT looked at the outcome of the India v. West Indies Semi-Final #2.)

That was quite the upset. New Zealand had been unbeaten and had pulled off some amazing wins.

England was impressive. Once they dismissed the Black Caps for that low score I knew they had a very good chance of winning and they got off to a very good start. So it was not a gripping run-chase. My the time the Power Play was done you knew that New Zealand were screwed.

2016 “Battle of the Raj” India v England Final In ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20?

As draws for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 goes ‘India v England‘ probably is as good as it gets now that Pakistan (or for that matter Sri Lanka) did not qualify for the Semi-Finals.

‘India v West Indies‘ would have been popular BUT that will now be the Thursday, March 31, 2016 Semi-Final (i.e., semi #2). Unless Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels or Darren Sammy (among others) produces an absolute stunner, a 180+ strike rate 70+, India, playing at home, could/should pull off a win. They did well against Australia.

New Zealand have been unbeaten BUT upsets are easy in T20.

India v. England will elicit lots of pent up emotions. That would be a cracking final. I think India will win — though my record of predicting T20s is not great since luck rather than form plays such a HUGE role (and there are REVIEWS to overturn really bad umpiring decisions).

Can’t wait. Has been a good tournament.

Sri Lanka Surprisingly Is Already Out Of The ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20, In India.

I had assumed, or maybe I should say hoped, that Sri Lanka would make it to at least the semi-final stage. The match against England was a cracker and I chewed my nails all the way through. Shame. They had played quite well over the last 12 months.

Amazed by the West Indies. New Zealand is good BUT I didn’t think they would be unbeaten. Has been a GOOD tournament. I have watched all of the Super 10 matches. Still quite a bit of cricket left.

Both Bangladesh & Afghanistan At #ICCWT20 Demonstrated Why They Still Need More Experience.

Current standings as of Wednesday, March 23, 2016. From http://www.icc-cricket.com of course. Where else? Click to ENLARGE and study.

My heart went out to both Bangladesh & Afghanistan last night, Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Yes, I stayed up and watched the highlights of BOTH matches. I was sure, at the start of their innings that they would win. What an upset that would have been — England beaten by Afghanistan. In the end it was NOT to be.

I feel bad for their supporters. The Bangladeshis must feel crushed. So close and yet so far.

In the end, however, it was sheer inexperience. And you can’t buy that or short-circuit it. So the two teams that qualified will not make it to the semi-finals and hence the finals. New Zealand has been a revelation. Will this be there year?

March 21, 2016, ‘First Day Of Spring’ Snow In New Hampshire Lakes — WMUR Was Wrong.

by Anura Guruge

Much more snow that I was led to believe. I didn’t watch the WMUR forecast last night — I was too engrossed in watching the highlights of Sri Lanka v West Indies on Willow TV.

But I did interrupt by #ICCWT20 viewing to catch the forecast on Saturday night. WMUR was emphatic. Snow would be to the South and East of Concord. Well we are to the North of Concord. So I was surprised by how much we got. Probably 4″ and a bit more in some places.

I shoveled BECAUSE I like to shovel. I have never denied not being strange. It was easy to shovel. Very light, very fluffy. It was beginning to melt as I was shoveling as the temp. was rapidly rising above 32°F. It was nice. Gave me an excuse not to run since it is an hour of shoveling or ‘the run’. The dogs were OK. I took them for a walk and they could play outside while I shoveled.

All the pictures taken with my Panasonic Lumix LX100.

Hats Off To England & New Zealand For Their ‘Out Of Their Skins’ Performances At #ICCWT20.

by Anura Guruge

hatsoffsaeng16111

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I watched the highlights of both  ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20, games — Australia v. New Zealand & England v. South Africa — back to back, from India, last night.

I was amazed. Exceptional cricket. I was also wrong as to the outcome in each instance.

I was sure that New Zealand were at least 40 short of what they needed. But, I was wrong. As they did with India they pulled off a brilliant win. Impressive, cohesive team. They most likely will get to the final. Possibly even walk away as the Champs. Well done.

As for England, I am humbled. In awe. I was sure that they wouldn’t get within 60 runs of the target. Boy was I wrong. What a run chase. Who knew that current teams could chase such large totals.

Yet AGAIN South African CAPTAINCY was poor! Just do not understand what they are thinking. This time it was Faf du Plessis. He should have brought in Imran Tahir during the Power Play to TRY and stem the tide. He didn’t. He persevered with pace. You had to take pace off the ball. I think that is what cost them the match. Poor captaincy. Don’t get it. Very clever and talented bunch. Feel real bad for my favorites Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock (who I have raved about for 12 months). Great innings for nought. AB de Villiers, per his standards, played a poor innings. C’est la vie. That match alone could have cost them the Championship!
