“A Place To Call Home”, The Australian “Downton Abbey”, Season 5 Is Nail Bitingly Gripping.

by Anura Guruge

I have never watched Soap Operas so I don’t know how intense they get, BUT Season 5 of ‘A Place To Call Home‘, now on Acorn TV, is gripping beyond anything I have seen on late.

Puts “Indian Summers” to shame, and “Downton Abbey“, with all of its exquisitely crafted drama, never, in my opinion, had so many suspenseful storylines in parallel. Whoever the writers are they are GOOD. Definitely knows their craft and audience. Bravo. Yes, of course, there are a few patches when the storyline and dialogue sags. But, that is to be expected.

Australians should be proud.

I, confess. Until I came across ‘A Place To Call Home‘, which I have been hooked on since Season 1, I thought that the only good TV that the Aussies could produce was live cricket! Now I know better.

PBS Masterpiece “Home Fires” Is BACK, With Season 2, After 17-Month Gap!

Season 2 Episode 1 is AVAILABLE, FREE, Online.
At the PBS homepage.

What Season 1 looked like.

We got thoroughly hooked “Home Fires” Season 1 in the Fall of 2015. Preferred it to “Indian Summers” which also premiered at the same time.

Of course my cup of tea, but what was neat is that Teischan (then 9) loved it.

Had kind of forgotten about it since it has been so long. Then happened to see that Season 2 was starting this past weekend. DVRed it, of course. Watched it Wednesday, April 5, evening.

It was good. Nice, Downton Abbey-like, storylines. Very warm and cozy.

If you are an Anglophile this will be magical. Can’t wait for Episode 2. So many familiar faces.

I recommend it with gusto. Plus, it appears to be available online. So, go for it. You will thank me.

We watched all of “Indian Summers” Season 1 though we weren’t that impressed with it. It was OK — but it could have been so much better given the setting and material. BUT, we will still record and watch Season 2.

Churchill’s Secret” that precedes it looks to be real good.

Just a heads up. Tonight, November 22, 2015, Episode 9 is the finale for Season 1 of ‘Indian Summers‘. Not sure whether a Season 2 is planned or funded.

Can’t say I will miss it much. Yes, we watched all 8 episodes so far, within 48 hours of them airing. It was OK. The chemistry was never right.

We all much preferred ‘Home Fires‘ which ended two Sundays ago. That we would like back.

Not sure what happened to ‘Indian Summers‘. You could detect the elements of ‘Passage to India‘ (e.g., court scene) and ‘Jewel in the Crown‘ (e.g., interracial love interests, Independence etc.) But the characterization was poor and I finally worked it out. The dialog was insipid.

So there will be no new Masterpiece shows on PBS in December 2015. It will be reruns. Then in January or February 2016 we kick of with the FINAL SEASON, season 6, of ‘Downton Abbey

I happened, out of idle curiosity, to check the PBS (Boston Channel 2 WGBH) listing to make sure that the DVR was still set to record ‘Home Fires‘ and ‘Indian Summers‘. Noticed that they were airing a rerun of a ‘Downton Abbey‘ episode as opposed to ‘Home Fires’. Pointed that out to the kids. They wouldn’t believe it. Checked Channel 11, NH PBS. Ditto.

Googled. Found above.

I am shocked. It finished without giving any kind of warning that this was IT for the Season — at least Season 1. I am bummed. A double whammy for us. We just finished watching all the episodes (27?) of the Australian ‘A Place to Call Home‘ — which was on PAR with ‘Downton Abbey‘ & ‘Home Fires’. We definitely liked ‘Home Fires’ more than ‘Indian Summers’ though we have not missed an episode of that either. Shame.

A nice, heartwarming, easy to watch show. I guess it will be awhile before we get Season 2. It could be like the “Great British Bake Off” — another family favorite. We might end up watching in on YouTube before it ever makes it to PBS.

Acorn TV (on Roku) listing. https://acorn.tv/franchise/placetocallhome

We subscribe to “British TV on your Roku” Acorn TV. At $4/month it is a steal. A lot of good stuff in there, such as the new BBC comedy “The Detectorists“.

I saw “A Place to Call Home” in the Acorn catalog and thought that the kids — hooked on British period drama after “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge” — might like it. I was right, as I tend to be when it comes to what the kids like to watch. They can’t wait till our ‘daily’ family TV ‘hour’ to watch this show. I am glad.

It is a good show. Well done. Compelling storyline — albeit with some adult themes. It is set in 1953 Australia and that was the year I was born. BUT, I remember that many of the customs and traditions portrayed are ones that we too had in Ceylon.

IF you can get it — watch it. Yes, of course, we are also watching “Indian Summers” & “Home Fires” on PBS. The kids like them both, the STEAMY scenes in the former (though NOT as graphic as in “A Place to Call Home”) having them intrigued, though I can tell that they prefer “Home Fires”! I don’t blame them. So do I. Something is not right with “Indian Summers”. It just does not engage with one as does the other shows. Home this helps.

I had a hunch that this might be a ‘keeper’ and I may have got it right. I DVRed Episode 1 last Sunday, straight after recording Episode 2 of “Indian Summers“, and we watched it, mid-week after we had watched “Indian Summers”.

Teischan was enthralled and that just makes my day. These days I record many of these programmes for the kids. That they absolutely adore anything and everything to do with British period drama just cracks me up (in a nice way) given that they really haven’t had that much exposure to the ol’ country. It started, of course, with ‘Downton Abbey‘ but they have now seen all of ‘Cranford’ (via Roku & Amazon Prime), ‘Mr. Selfridge‘ and many episodes of ‘Upstairs/Downstairs’ (via Roku & Acorn).

“Home Fires” is a warm and cozy story kind of like Cranford meets Downton Abbey in 1939.

I have been wracking my brain to see if I knew anybody who attended “Women’s Institute” (WI) meetings on a regular basis and I am still drawing a blank. But, of course, WI is no stranger to I.

I loved Episode 1. It was cute and compelling.

I found it much more engaging that “Indian Summers”. We have now watched 2 episodes and I am still not convinced about it. It seems to lack some pivotal  je ne sais quoi. It has got all the right ingredients but in my book it still comes up short. Per PBS tonight’s episode 3 is supposed to have fireworks. Lets hope so. We are going to watch all of it, but right now I am more looking forward to seeing episode 2 of ‘Home Fires’ than E3 of ‘Indian Summers’.

P.S., We (Deanna & I) watched Episode 1 of “The Widower“. It was GOOD. Give it a try. Interesting. Enjoy.

I Am Excited About “Indian Summers” Masterpiece Theater Coming To PBS SOON.

Yes, I am excited but mainly for the kids and Deanna. During the Summer we watched “Passage to India“, “Gandhi” and of course, tons of “Downton Abbey“. Well, this from what I can see, is “Passage to India” crossed with “Downton Abbey” — with Gandhi thrown in for good measures. Looks very compelling. Can’t wait.

Just wanted to SHARE with you since I didn’t want you to miss it. I will try to keep you posted as to the U.S. schedule. OK?
