“Growing Up Smith” Movie (2015) — Brilliant: Very Funny & Emotive In The End.

by Anura Guruge

Never heard of it, never seen a trailer for it. Then this past Monday I was idly browsing through the DISH program guide when I noticed that it must have been a STARZ preview weekend. “Growing Up Smith” was coming up and it looked interesting. We, for obvious reasons, are suckers for this type of movie — Indians coming of age in the U.S. (or the U.K.). That it was a 10-year old was even better — and as I had hoped Teischan loved it.

Very clever and cute movie. Brilliantly put together. Rip roaringly funny. Really, really funny — at so many levels. Then right at the end … very emotive. Even tear jerking. Teischan was mad that it ended the way it did. But, the ending was good. You could make up your own scenario.

Definitely recommend it. One of the more entertaining movies I have seen of late. Enjoy.

Ajit ‘Bloody’ Pai, Who Killed Net Neutrality, Was Appointed To The FCC By Barack Obama, In 2012!

by Anura Guruge

Wow. WOw. WOW!

I had no idea. I would never have guessed. I just assumed that he, like Nikki ‘Necklace’ Haley, was an Trump appointee.

Obama. How could you have?

You got many things right, BUT Bloody Pai and healthcare.gov will haunt you forever and a day.

Healthcare.gov, that still sucks, was pretty inexcusable.

But, Bloody Pai is worse.

On, Mitch McConnell’s recommendation! Barack WTF were you inhaling that day? This has to be the epitome of stupid. McConnell’s recommendation! The man who vowed to stop you from having a second term. You must have got some good stuff delivered to the WH.

Indians. {Smile}

As folks that know me will attest, I get offended when folks ‘accuse’ me of being Indian. We will leave it at that.

Ah, Barack. How could you. And YOUR Net Neutrality.

I am holding this against you.

I am crushed.

A U.S. Study Of 300,000 Americans Claims That A Glass Of Wine A Day Reduces Heart Risks.

This is NOT new news so to speak. I have heard the virtues of ‘one glass of wine a day‘ for years — which is why I follow that advice religiously. What is interesting is that this study, extensive in scope given the 300,000 Americans followed, appears to contradict a recent British study that expressed doubts as to the health benefits of wine (or beer).

I must also confess that at my annual physical, last week (8/8/2017), my doctor, a very nice Indian, also appeared to express skepticism to the state of my health — my daily glass of red wine notwithstanding. He said I was going to die, but he couldn’t be specific. He just knew I was going to die. Not sure when either. He says it is just a hunch he has — that I am going to die.

Sri Lankans Accusing India Of Cheating After 3rd T20I ‘Is Not Cricket’.

A Sri Lankan posted the (at very top) “Indian Cricket the Real Face (Exposed)” video on Facebook on February 14, 2016. I immediately knew that it must have been in reaction to the India vs Sri Lanka 3rd T20I that too place that day in Visakhapatnam (India). I had not watched it yet but given how badly India thrashed Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I, after SL’s surprisingly easy win in the 1st I had a feel that Sri Lankans were not happy about the result.

I finished watching the 3rd T20I yesterday. Yes, there were two (2) bad UMPIRING DECISIONS — and yes, both umpires were Indian. Actually there were a couple more questionable decisions but these two, that I ‘spell out’ above were what would have riled Sri Lankans.

The implication that MS Dhoni cheated because he appealed is not right. I was kind of surprised because he also broke the wicket to try and get a stumping — BUT he appealed for ‘caught behind’. IF it was a catch WHY did he bother to break the stumps. You can’t be out caught & stumped. The appeal, however, was instinctive. He didn’t stop and think about it. MS Dhoni has a hard-earned and well-deserved reputation for ONLY appealing when he thinks the batsman is out. He got it wrong this time BUT I for one don’t think he was cheating!

For a start the Indians had NO reason to cheat. Sri Lanka were 7 for 54 in the 11 over. Plus this was NOT a Test Match or an ODI. It was a T20I.

It was bad umpiring. I also don’t think the umpires were cheating. Yes, it would have been better if we had neutral umpires BUT that debate is now done and dusted. ICC umpires have to much at stake to want to cheat. TV replays highlight their decisions and they are rated for how well they did. Mistakes like this cost them in ranking — which translates into the fixtures they will be allowed to umpire in the future — and as such FUTURE income. That is the biggest motivator UNLESS of course they stand to make ‘millions’ on match fixing!

I am pretty harsh about match fixing and cheating — in the game that I love and have loved for 5 decades. But in this case I will NOT even come close to even thinking that the Indians cheated. They bowled well. There was some turn in the pitch and quite a few of the Sri Lankans batted LIKE I USED TO BAT! Smile.

I would like to SCRAP DRS and instead, in every Test, ODI and T20I, have each appeal and decision reviewed to avoid errors.
