Steve Jobs Died This Day 6-Years Ago — Wow! It Was Just October 5, 2011.

Still seems hard to believe that he is not here!

I think Steve would have had lot to say (and do) IF he was around today — given that the iPhone, that he wrought, has been key to so much of today’s social climate. The iPhone has changed the trajectory of human civilization — and I, for one, am not sure whether it was for the better.

Notwithstanding, we all owe a huge debt to Mr. Steve Jobs. He was an exceptional man in so many dimensions.

I miss Steve.

Just 6-years ago. Time flies.

Will Japan’s Latest Earthquake (Nov. 20) Again Affect Camera Shipments By Sony, Canon, Nikon etc.?

Latest November 20, 2016 earthquake (and Tsunami).

There has been no reports of any crippling damages as yet.

So all could be fine. But even a couple of days worth of delays at the Japanese end could affect Christmas availability.

I will keep an eye and let you know. This is just a heads up.

Sony’s Announced Delay In Camera Shipments Could Affect Nikon, Fuji, Pentax etc. IF Sensors Are Involved.

by Anura Guruge

sonydelay

From “DPReview”, June 28, 2016. Click image to access original.

In 2015 it was estimated that Sony owned 40% of the sensor market — with it being known that Nikon, Fuji, Pentax and Olympus (among others) bought some or all of their sensors from Sony. Apple also relies on Sony sensors for the iPhones.

It is not clear from this announcement whether sensor manufacturing has been impacted. If so there could be a domino effect rippling across the whole market. One piece of ‘good news’ is that Apple has cut back on their demand for sensors with iPhones not selling as much as they used to. That could help.

So best to be on your guard over the next 3 months IF you are hoping to get a new camera. There could be delays. Heads up.

Has Israeli ‘Cellebrite’ Reverse-Engineered Some/All Of Apple iOS 8.x To Unlock iPhones?

Not sure whether Apple and others are being disingenuous here BUT from the time I heard of Cellebrite’s involvement with the FBI to bypass the “wrong password” retry safeguards it was very clear to me that Cellebrite MUST offer this service to others.

I also don’t think that the FBI was their first client.

It would appear that they have been unlocking, in terms of encryption, phones for some time now.

In the case of iPhones they might have reverse engineered some of the iOS source code at the MACHINE CODE instruction level (as opposed to C++ code). Reverse engineering code is doable with enough smarts and hard work.

What we now need is ENCRYPTED machine code! Something that I thought about 40 years ago, while working for IBM, around the same time I came up with my software authentication scheme (which is still used today) in 1978. Think about it. SMILE. It is doable.

Must Have Smart 2x Fast USB Car Charger With Car Finder APP Option.

by Anura Guruge

2X charging speed, designed in Germany

Between the Android pads the kids feel that they must have when travelling, Deanna’s camera and occasionally another Android phone/pad serving as a GPS we are constantly in need of FAST USB charging when we are travelling by car. I had a 4.8A/24W USB charger but that never seemed fast enough. The ZUS is faster and the mood lighting is way cool. I do NOT typically have a problem losing my cars but the free (built-in) Car Finder APP is neat to have and will amuse the kids. They will want the APP on their Androids.

Check it out. This is a serious USB car charger for those of us who have serious USB charging needs.

That FBI, With Help From ‘Cellebrite’, Could Compromise Apple iPhone Encryption Is Bad News For The World.

by Anura Guruge

The media, alas, continues to misrepresent exactly what the issue was to begin with and how and what the FBI (and Israeli ‘Cellebrite’) did to get to the encrypted data.

They did NOT break encryption.

That is pretty hard to do.

What they did was DISABLE the ‘Wrong Password’
retry safeguards.

You have all seen it. Enter the wrong password to say an online bank or credit card account three times and you are LOCKED OUT. You have to call in and start providing valid credentials and explanations. Well what the FBI and Cellebrite did was DISABLE this wrong password retry safeguard. Then they could keep on trying MILLIONS of passwords a second until they eventually got the one that unlocked the data.

NOT GOOD NEWS.

That a 3rd party was able to do this disabling is downright bloody scary.

Apple Already HAS A Trapdoor Built Into iPhones — IF NOT FBI Would NOT Have Made Request!

by Anura Guruge

iphonedfuYou need to be somewhat technical to understand and appreciate this.

The basic issue when it comes to this ‘Encryption Battle‘ is that the FBI wants Apple to develop some new code (a compromised version of the iPhone OS) that will enable the FBI to try entering new PINs, in rapid succession, programmatically, without the Apple OS deleting the encrypted data in the phone, or introducing delays between each attempt at entering the PINs.

So you have to ask the VITAL question (if you understand these matters).

IF the iPhone is locked — which is the case here — how can Apple or the FBI download this new code that they want Apple to develop.

IF an iPhone is locked then you should NOT be able to mess with the software already on it.

And this is where Apple has ALREADY compromised iPhones. They built into iPhones the so called “Device Firmware Upgrade” bypass. By attaching an USB connection to the iPhone you can enter DFU Mode.

DFUMode

Click to ENLARGE and goggle here. From: theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode

To be fair to Apple this is a NICE recovery mechanism to provide.

BUT, if it wasn’t there NONE of this would have come up.

A locked iPhone would have stayed LOCKED until you found the PIN.

So Apple created this slippery path.

As a Computer Technologist of 47-years I just wanted you to know about this.

I am torn. I do clearly see both sides. So I think they should just throw the damn phone into the Pacific and that Apple should eradicate DFU mode.

This is funny and I can sure see an elephant doing that.

But, I am skeptical as to the phone coming out, working — unless the iPhone, and I have never owned one, is more, amazingly, watertight than other phones. There is a fair amount of bacterial action that takes place inside an elephants gut. Here is a link. I would have to think that some amount of moisture would get into the phone. Growing up in Ceylon, where we do have wild elephants, I knew of bleached wood apples that had been processed by elephants, i.e., elephants eat wood apples, which have a hard (though porous) shell (hence the name) whole … and then a few days later pass them out, intact, bleached and with nothing inside. The digestive system ‘sucks out’ the nutritional innards through the porous shell. Here is a link. We would pick up these wood apples. So, I know that this does happen — first hand.

I got this video from my friend, train expert, Mike Tisdale. He, having visited Sri Lanka, knows quite a few other Sri Lankans. So, I have asked him to get this verified.

But, in the meantime, enjoy the video. I think this was probably in Thailand.

I Publish My Second Book On Comet ISON, Hopefully The Comet Of The Century, This Time A ‘Quick Reference’ For Busy Folks.

As I was writing the the first book on ISON I realized that it was too detailed for today’s always in a hurry, habitually time-challenged folks. I was, however, not going to carve up the first book because somebody will find all that detail useful. But, I knew I had to do a Reader’s Digest ‘condensed book’ version of it. So, that is what this 2nd Comet ISON book is about: a cut-to-the-chase, mainly in bullet-point form, Quick Reference for busy people.

It was also designed to be as conducive as possible for mobile device small screen perusal. As such it is like an APP for Comet ISON. Keep it tucked away inside a smart phone (e.g., iPhone or Android) or a pad and whip it out anytime one wants information about ISON, such as dates, times, speeds etc.

My very artistic sister-in-law, Leanne Davis Caires did the original artwork for the cover. As far as I know this is the FIRST ISON specific artwork — and it is for sale. Check out Leanne’s Etsy craft store.
