My Suspicions That ‘Amazfit’ (Per Their Usual MO) Most Likely Rushed The Availability Of The New ‘T-Rex Pro’ Smartwatch Appear To Be Vindicated.

by Anura Guruge

I really do despair of Amazfit. They remind me of a 4-year old kid. Just headstrong, impetuous & still immature. They just don’t seem to learn, & worse still just don’t seem to want to learn.

This is not the first time they rushed out a watch way before it was ready. They don’t seem to care. It is true that given their cheap pricing they attract a large customer base of unsophisticated, undemanding users. That is what they rely on. Most of those that NOW buy Amazfit watches are in third-world countries. They are not that fussy. Amazfit banks on that. Shoddy goods for folks that are used to shoddy goods.

Shame. The T-Rex Pro like some of Amazfit’s prior watches, in particular the Verge that promised so much, could have been amazing IF Amazfit took the time & care to test it all out prior to rushing it out.

Well, I am GLAD I have decided to stay well clear of Amazfit watches. I do NOT appreciate rubbish.

‘Amazfit T-Rex Pro’, Like Always Looks Good On Paper, BUT Is The APP & Software As Yet Ready For Prime Time?

by Anura Guruge

As some of you know (& these posts attest) I used to be a HUGE fan of Amazfit — in particular the very good-looking ‘Verge‘. But, I despaired of the unreliability & poor quality of its APP & internal software. Hardware & display is good, ‘A’ if not even ‘A+’ while the APP & software struggles to even get a passing grade. Very frustrating. From what I see on the Web & have heard things have NOT improved greatly over the last 2-years. Folks still have major issues with just getting the watch to pair & then sync.

I also NO LONGER trust Amazfit. Just have a bad feeling about them. They come across as ‘sleazy’. So, I am NOT going to trust MY data, especially GPS data, to them. Read-between-the-lines.

So, I look at this new ‘T-Rex Pro’ & sadly shake my head. Looks great, DIRT cheap BUT I know I will not be happy. So, why subject myself to the pain.

Garmin Forerunner 645(M) Gets Another Damning Review At Amazon — By A ‘Verified Buyer’.

by Anura Guruge

At Amazon

This is NOT good. Very disappointing and discouraging. I, like so many others, was rooting for the Garmin Forerunner 645. On paper it looks irresistible.

Shame that Garmin rushed it out before it was ready for prime-time.

That step count accuracy is poor is extremely damning. That is the basic, core function. IF you can’t trust that, then there is no point getting the FR645.

I am more or less sure that I will not get a FR645 anymore. Not worth the risk. Thinking of getting a Forerunner 935 which gets better reviews, on a consistent basis, and has been on the market for over a year. So, it is proven.

Garmin Forerunner 645(M) Continues To Get Panned At Amazon — By ‘Verified Buyers’.

The highlighted (i.e., in red box) comment, on the last line above, sums it all up — the impression that Garmin released it before it was ready to be released.

That was what they did with the Vivoactive 3 — as I found to my cost.

I had a hunch this would happen with the Forerunner 645, which is why I have maintained, from the start, that I was going to wait. I am so glad that I did NOT rush to get one.

I am, as you can see, monitoring this and keeping you posted. I will continue to do that.

It is, however, possible that I might not get a FR 645 after all! I might get a Forerunner 935 instead. It is a proven product which appears to be solid, stable and reliable.

Oh, Dear!

I kind of anticipated that there would be some teething problems — which is why I was not going to pre-order or buy one in the 1st month — but this seems more SERIOUS and deep-seated than I had hoped.

Bummed about the altimeter issues because that is why I had to return my 2nd Vivoactive 3.

Not good.

Appears that Garmin and Fitbit are just rushing products out before they are ready. I am not amused.

Best to wait … which is also what I am telling folks still about the Vivoactive 3.

I will, of course, be monitoring the situation and WILL keep you apprised.

Fuji ‘X’ June 9 Firmware Updates — First Real Problem, 50-140 Lens.

by Anura Guruge

This looks bad. Kind of had the feeling that any problems would show up in ‘less used’ products, particularly lenses, and that seems to be the case here.

Scary. You feel so helpless. When this happens you are ‘DEAD IN THE WATER’.

Poster is now reflecting that MAYBE he should have waited ‘for the dust to settle’. I already decided to wait till Monday (rather than Sunday). SMILE.

As an ol’ programmer I consider this atrocious programming. Rather than displaying ‘Firmware Broken‘ at least have the decency to ROLL BACK the update, get the lens to a semi-operable state and say “Update failed. Reinstall previous Firmware Version’. But I, for 40 years, have NEVER considered the Japanese to be very good programmers! Think about it. What has Japan done on the SOFTWARE front? Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter … List goes on. Good with hardware.

Fuji June 9, 2016 X-Series Firmware Updates — No Real Issues 1st 24 Hours.

by Anura Guruge

>> >>  1st real issue surfaces on a lens update  << <<

As promised in the first post about this HUGE X-series firmware update I am monitoring forums and online news for reports of problems.

So far, viz. mid-night June 10, 2016, all seems well. Just two ‘problem’ posts and both seem, to some extent, ‘user error’. But still early days. I will continue to monitor. There is another thread, with a lot of posts, where people have successfully updated, but from what I can see none of them have had time to put the camera/lenses through their paces.

NO Surprise That DISH’s Sling TV Continues To Struggle — Riddled With Technical Problems & Pitiful Customer Support.

by Anura Guruge

slingpoor1

Click image to READ “The Street” article from today.

slingpoor2

Click image to read article in “Motherboard” from yesterday.

I have now had ‘Sling TV‘ on my Roku 3 for nearly 11 months. I got Sling TV so that I could watch cricket on Willow and UK OneWorld Sports.

I have had NOTHING but trouble with Sling TV — including yet another episode of video loading errors last night.

Sling TV is an unmitigated nightmare.

What makes it worse is that ‘they’ — Sling TV management and customer support — know about the problems and do NOTHING about it.

Why do I stick with Sling TV? It is the only way I can currently have access to UK OneWorld Sports, and in the Summer, THEY have exclusive rights to English Test Matches. That is it.

If it was just Willow I would GLADLY pay the $4/month extra and get Willow directly on the Roku.

So the above articles make eminent sense. IF you have any sense DO NOT subscribe to Sling TV. Sling TV will drive you to distraction.

‘We’, i.e., those that subscribe to the International Sports Package, supposedly already have the new User Interface — as of early December. Trust me, it SUCKS. Sucks big time. It is devoid of program information! I kid you not. You have to click on each program to see what it is.

So, do yourself a HUGE favor and stay away from Sling TV. You will THANK ME for this advice.

Happy New Year.

The Roku, other than for Sling TV, is an absolute JOY — especially with Amazon Prime, Sky News, PBS, Acorn etc.

Click to ENLARGE and read. Acceleration in the last 49 seconds. Yes, 49 seconds. I did a graph to show that it was straight line acceleration. 40% in 49 seconds!

Now transpires that Brandon Bostian was some kind of zealous ‘travel safety’ advocate plus a confirmed loner.

So was he, most likely extremely aware that Congress, in D.C., was in the process of debating Amtrak funding set out to make an indelible statement?

Think about it.

Scary.

Was this the ULTIMATE in a graphic Political Statement!

Interesting that nobody is coming forward about his girlfriend, wife or even any other partner. Seems to have been a loner.

Obviously had to have had some mental issues, even if he was not getting treatment.

I have concluded that today’s incessant social media is aggravating mental unease. All this non-stop ‘relationship’ chatter on Facebook, Twitter etc. makes those susceptible to such anxious, rattled and depressed. I see it all around me.

Definitely some destructive element at work. The brake were working.

The sudden braking may have been in his plan ALL along. Sudden, straight line acceleration followed by applying the emergency brakes, on a sharp corner, was GUARANTEED to jackknife and derail the train. So the braking could have been the ‘belt-and-braces’ — making doubly sure that the train would derail.

But I am beginning to think that there could have been a political statement aspect to this tragic crash.

Food for thought. Maybe we might be getting to the point that we might be better off with driverless trains and even planes.

I have a sinking feeling that we have some type of mental issue here — with Brandon Bostian.

There are more people with mental issues in the U.S. than most people even have a clue. I saw these pictures of Brandon Bostian, this morning, while having my coffee in bed, in the U.K. “Daily Mail“, the ONLY newspaper I read (and have been doing so since the 1970s).

Nice enough looking guy, even dashingly handsome in his later pictures, BUT look at some of the earlier ones.

Hhhhmmmm.

Simple question. Does Amtrak ever check the mental situation of their engineers?

The statement by Brandon Bostian’s lawyer (above) is VERY telling. No “health issues to speak of”. Good lawyer-speak. Says nothing about MENTAL health.

Says he was not on medication. So on face value it would mean he wasn’t taking any ‘psychiatric’ drugs. BUT again lawyer-speak. Did he STOP taking such drugs? Did that result in suicidal thoughts? Irrational behavior? Did anybody say anything to Amtrak about him acting strange?

Wakeup call for Amtrak. You have to be on top of the mental profile of all your employees.

We used to have the saying “Going Postal”.

Will be have to add “Going Amtrak”?
