Though I was living in Paris (i.e., not that far away) when this, i.e., ‘Rose Island‘ happened, I do NOT recall hearing about. But, I was all of 15, wasn’t that interested in news & had other, more pressing things on my mind. When I first saw the Netflix trailer I assumed that it was all made up. Quite the story. Funny etc. Then I realized that it is (nearly) all TRUE! Wow. How amazing. Incredible. I wish the movie provided more information as to how he, i.e., ‘Mr. Rose’, the engineer, built it. Could not have been easy.

Very entertaining. Easy to watch.

As with ‘A Fortunate Man‘ it has to have been dubbed because it was NOT made in English & the leading characters are mainly Italian. The dubbing is top-notch. It fooled me (but, usually that is NOT hard to do).

I definitely recommend this movie. Enjoy.

It Will Be DECADES Before Pope Francis’ Updated “Lord’s Prayer” Makes It Into English.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the U.K. ‘The Sun’ original.

The U.K. Catholic Church is NOT defying the pope or Rome. They would never do that. To much to lose, especially in ‘Church of England‘ U.K.

They are just exploiting a VALID technicality.

The official prayers for all languages are contained in a Vatican-approved, language-specific missal.

The NEW Lord’s Prayer, as yet, will ONLY appear in the Italian missal. That, obviously, is not what is used in the U.K.

It takes years, if not decades, for the vernacular versions to be translated (from the Latin) and approved by the Vatican. Hence, why there will be a long, long delay before English speaking Catholics will have to re-learn the Lord’s Prayer.

But, rest assured, the pope has the right & authority to change the Lord’s Prayer.

Pope Francis Gives INTO Temptation And Changes The “Lord’s Prayer”!

HUGE change, but it will not be instantaneous.

It will first appear in the Italian Missal — which has yet to be published.

It will then take years before it percolates into the other Missals — especially English.

What is bothering many is that the Pope’s change will ONLY apply to the Catholic version. So, we will now have two versions of the Lord’s Prayer; the Catholic version and the non-Catholic version.

What fun.

However, as I said in my December 2018 post, I do AGREE with the pope (for a rare change).

People With Interesting Names: Nick Confessore Of “The New York Times”.

by Anura Guruge

nickcfddg

What a great name. Saw him (and his name) on TV Wednesday morning.

“Confessore” — ‘confessor’ in Italian.

Not a common name in the U.S. According to the last U.S. census there were less than 250 people, living in the U.S., with that last name.

What a great name for an investigative reporter. Make them confess.

Would love to know the origins of the name. Definitely some clerical connotations — or one of his distant ancestors, way back, was a noted ‘Confessor of the (Christian) Faith’.

I wonder if he knows where this name comes from.

Anywho … I just wanted to share.

Have been meaning to document names like this, that catch my fancy, so that others too can ponder and marvel.

Never mind the $1,695 price tag for this cute — Italian made — purse.

This was priceless.

Only the Trumps could have played such a trump.

I am SURE she had NO idea. And he probably wasn’t that sure either.

That it was day before Armistice Day — very special for US Brits — made it all the more poignant.

Maybe somebody should spend a few weeks with her showing her all the flags of the nations so she knows what not to pick next time.

She will make a FINE U.S. First Lady.

Pope Francis does NOT sing on this CD (or ‘album’).

Instead it is his words, sometimes in heavily accented English and other times in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, from homilies he has delivered, set to very catchy, high-energy, electronic music by composers Dino Doni and Toni Pagliuca — and complemented with hymns and Latin chants. Got that.

Basically Pope Francis’ words set to music.

You can hear the ‘Wake Up! Wake Up!’ in English at the 2:46 minute mark, as shown below.

Will Australian Cardinal George Pell Be The Next Pope — After Francis?

Cardinal_George_Pell

Cardinal George Pell.

One way or another, just going on what Pope Francis himself has repeatedly said about his ‘2 to 3 year life span’ and the possibility of him retiring (à la Benedict XVI), I have a distinct feeling that we will have a new pope, post Francis, in the next 18 months.

So, it falls upon me, as “Mr. Next Pope“, to start working on this again, though I had hoped for a longer break.

Australian Cardinal George Pell (74 years in age), though controversial in his own right (for his handling of sex abuse in Australia and being outspoken about both Benedict & Francis), is now seen, increasingly, as the ‘Leader of the Opposition’ — though ironically, Francis has also given him significant power (over Vatican budgets and finances) as a ‘trusted’ member of his ‘inner cabinet’.

220px-Carlo_Caffarra_Madrid_2011

Cardinal Carlo Caffarra.

My initial druthers had been that AFTER the Francis experiment, which has NOT worked out that well, that the cardinals will become even more introspective, batten down the Vatican hatches and decide to go back to the ‘ways of the old’ — i.e., an European pope, if NOT an Italian pope. Basically avoid another EXOTIC. And Pell, from Oceania (as the Vatican characterizes that part of the Pacific), is definitely an EXOTIC. But he does seems to have a following as exemplified by this recent letter of ‘no-confidence’ to Francis signed by 13 other cardinals.  13 cardinals is 66 votes short of the 2/3 majority that Pell would need to be elected pope. That is a fair chunk of cardinals that have to get behind him. But what is fascinating about the list of 13 is that it includes INFLUENTIAL names from all continents, and some with real clout, e.g., New York’s Dolan, Canada’s Collins, South Africa’s Fox Napier, Europe’s Müller. These folks can definitely rustle up votes from their colleagues.

At 74 Pell is YOUNG. The trend is towards OLDER, i.e., past 75, popes in the hope they don’t rule for decades and decades now that life expectancies are long.

I see that , in their infamous ‘Next Pope’ betting, has my 2013 #1 papabile, Canada’s Marc Ouellet at #2. But Marc is even younger! Philippines’ Tagle is but a wet dream. Not for another 20 years.

Here is a name to think about, 77 year old Italian Carlo Caffarra. His conservative credentials are impeccable.

These are the two ‘Nullity of Marriage’, i.e., marriage annulment,
decrees issued by Pope Francis on September 18, 2015.

The REASON for their being TWO is that
one is for the Latin Rites Catholics
and the other is for the Eastern Rites Catholics
— given that EACH has its own set of
Canon Laws.

They are both ‘motu proprio’ (on his own impulse (or initiative))
edicts. As the name says it is an edict enacted by a pope
without seeking ‘blessing’ from a council or synod.
A pope can do that and it is a perfectly valid decree.
It can ONLY be overturned by another pope.

The two ‘motu proprio’ edicts are:
“Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus”
(Latin Rites)
“Mitis et misericors Iesus”
(Eastern Rites)

As is the case with nearly ALL papal documents
the TITLE is the first few words of the document in Latin.
So the title per se does NOT refer to marriage or nullity!
Instead the title in each case refers to Jesus (Iesus).
“Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus” — Clement Jude Lord Jesus.
“Mitis et misericors Iesus”  — Jesus, forgiving and merciful.
