The Great ‘Titian’ Would Have Approved Of His Modern Namesake ‘Teischan’ (14) — The Renaissance Girl.

by Anura Guruge

The great renaissance artists prided themselves on being multifaceted; multitalented. They could adroitly turn their hands to many things. Well, Teischan is following suit.

Today she wanted to use the power saw to cut some shelves to size. She has been proficiently using this saw for the last 2-years. I am impressed. I just stand & watch — and take pictures much to her chagrin.

So, this is her Summer. The 5′ mandala is nearly done. So, in between, she is RE-MODELLING her room — YET again. She does this like 3-times a year — Summer, Christmas & Easter.

Well, I am NOT complaining. I am TRYING to get her to start DRIVING. She has a CAR. Yes, a Jag. SMILE. Not mine. I have a Jag. She has a Jag.

‘Preferred Warranties Inc’ (PWI) Delivered, In Full, On Their Promise To Pay For Car Repairs. I Am Delighted.

They paid, per their promise — less the $100 deductible.

The check came within ‘the week’ of us filing in the paperwork.

They provided towing, as promised.

That is all I was expecting. And they lived up to my expectations.

When I bought the 2008 Ford Taurus from Heath England (the proprietor) at ‘Autofinders‘ (in Laconia, NH) it came with 3-months of ‘Preferred Warranties Inc‘ (PWI) coverage. Heath, from what I know, typically includes that with most of his cars. I liked Heath and I got talking to him while my 18-year old daughter test drove the Taurus — though the car wasn’t for her.

Heath assured me that PWI actually delivers. I, a professional cynic, was skeptical. But, he was adamant. Said that it was one of the few warranties that truly worked. I asked him to give me some local garages that accept PWI. He wrote down two names. I asked him IF I could get additional coverage — beyond 3-months. He said ‘Of course, but it will cost ya‘. Well, I was born a long time ago. I ended up agreeing on a 2-year warranty and Heath nominally deducted the 3-months that was previously included. It was NOT cheap. It cost me over $800.

But, I believe in insurance. I understand insurance. I know how insurance works. You buy insurance for the peace of mind. To cover costs in EXCESS of what you are willing to tackle.

[All that said above, I do NOT have life insurance on myself or anybody else. Never bought a life policy. Never will. SMILE. But, car/property/health insurance is different.]

Well, I (and to an extent Heath) lucked out on that Taurus. One full year with NO issues — though it has to be noted that we put a grand total of “3,800” miles on it!

Then pretty close to its one-year anniversary the brakes went. We were just on our way to Maine, though we were only taking the Taurus as far as the kennels where we board the dogs.

When we got back we took the Taurus to a new mechanic in Rochester — that came recommended from the dog kennels.

But, prior to taking it in we called and filed a CLAIM. They immediately stepped up with towing. That was nice. We didn’t need it. We pay top dollar for AAA ‘Premier’. Remember, I said I believe in insurance. But, we used their towing — which was prompt and good enough. [We wanted to give AAA a break. They have their hands full towing my Jags. SMILE.]

The mechanic did call PWI and give them his costs etc. But, he wasn’t willing to deal with them. He wanted to be paid by us, in full, by check. We kind of suspected that too.

We paid. Got the bill, from the mechanic, stating that we paid and then sent that to PWI via e-mail.

I called a few days later to check on the status. They said the check had already been cut!

The check came today. I am delighted.

Now there are those that will argue that I am still $500 in the hole. I do NOT see it like that.

For a start there is still 11-months left on the warranty. We might need other work. Plus, this ‘job’ could have been more expensive. That is why I have insurance.

So, Heath England was right. PWI does deliver and for the record so does Heath. SMILE. You can call him at 603-527-0055.

Bottom line here. I am telling you that PWI delivered — at least in this instance.

I Can’t Afford The A7 RII Or Even The RX10 II, So Instead I Bought Sony (SNE) Stock.

2 new cameras: A7 RII & RX10 II.

Sony (SNE) stock price chart from “MarketWatch.com”. You could buy SNE on Friday, June 12, 2015 in the $30.40 range.

Both from Sony’s official Website at www.sony.net.

To say that I am drooling over the two new Sony cameras, the Alpha A7 RII and RX10 II, doesn’t even come close to the Siren Call exerted by them. I have, whenever I have a spare second, reading anything and everything I can about them, particularly the RX10 II. The RX10 II could be exactly what I want (if not need) though I will confess that the my latest research has also made me consider the Leica V-Lux which has twice the zoom. Plus a Leica! A magical name for those that really know their optics though you should all know by now my aversion for buying things overtly German.

The RX10 II would make me AGAIN reexamine all the profound camera-related decisions I made last Summer — when I decided after a 3 decade hiatus that it would be really nice to be a camera enthusiast again (though I sometimes regret it because I LOVED the freedom of enjoying and exploring a place, say the Grand Canyon, with Deanna taking all the pictures). Last August I started my new camera journey by buying a refurbished Nikon Coolpix L820, from BuyDig, for $139. I returned it within 24 hours, for a full refund, after taking these pictures at the 2014 Pittsfield, N.H. Balloon Festival. That is when I decided that I really needed to get a full-function, DSLR. So I got the refurbished Canon Rebel T3i from Canon. I think I paid $375 for it. The Canon has served me well BUT in the end it is a tad too ‘low-end’ for what I really would like and I will need to spend more money on lenses IF I am ever going to be happy with it. Plus Devanee thinks it is now HER camera. But, I am realistic enough to admit that interchangeable lens cameras are a PAIN. The April trip to Arizona, horseback riding in Canyon de Chelly and the recent hike up Mount Major, painfully demonstrated that I really do not enjoy lugging around a large camera with two lenses.

I basically want a good quality camera with 5 things: HIGH ISO (given that I do take a LOT of pictures at concerts (without a flash), exceptional image quality, superlative (accurate and fast) autofocus (because my eyes are no longer that good), a decent zoom (200mm) and the option to use Aperture-Priority and Shutter Speed-Priority photography. That is it. Video really isn’t that important though I will occasionally use it. Hence the appeal of the RX10 II — though I realize that it is first and foremost a 4K video camera that shoots still. The IRONY!

But while doing all my reading and research I stumbled upon something I did NOT know. Sony is the world’s largest (and preeminent) CMOS chip maker. These new cameras will make Sony’s CMOS Exmor chips even more attractive to other vendors. Of late, having got burnt (the second time around) with GoPro stock I have had some success with Ambarella (AMBA) & Cirrus Logic (CRUS) stock. SMILE. So much so that I am a believer in chip stocks — especially any chips that go into today’s phones, cameras and DRONES. So what the heck, I can’t afford the RX10 II, so I bought a few SNE shares. Knowing my luck SNE will probably now tank! That is the risk I take everyday. I wish there was a mechanism where I could be an anti-investor of myself, i.e., be able to take the opposite position to every investment move I make. So my anti-investor would short SNE to the same extent that I went long. My anti-investor could be a billionaire so is my skill and luck with stock! Hence why I can’t afford a RX10 II. OK, I don’t want anybody, starting with Deanna, trying to EXPLAIN to me that IF I hadn’t bought a MGB and two Jags — I might be able to afford a used RX 10 (Mk1). I need the Jags to get around in, now that we don’t have the KIA, and the MGB is Devanee’s

Dish or MetroCast After DirecTV — I Guess It Isn’t Even Close!

My detested and deplored DirecTV contract ends in June — two months from now.

June 22nd to be precise. As I avowed within a few days of getting it, I will cancel my DirecTV contract the VERY DAY that my 2-year commitment ends. To say that DirecTV irks me would be an understatement. DirecTV has got to be one of the scummiest companies in the U.S.

So what do I do next.

I, actually all of us, LOVE the Roku 3. The Roku really has changed our lives — watching “Downton Abbey“, nearly every day, not the only reason. Though I will give it some REAL serious consideration over the next few weeks, I am not convinced that I can live just with STREAMING. Streaming is good. Streaming is fun BUT I still like, or want, broadcast channels.

Plus, I, my nature and my IBM background, am into redundant solutions. Not sure I want everything media-wise coming into this house to be Internet-based — even IF I end up, down the road, with two separate Internet feeds, TDS & MetroCast, for redundancy.

I don’t think I need all the channels I now get with DirecTV. But I am not going to sacrifice BBC America, Travel or Animal Planet for $10/month. So most likely I will still end up with a 200+ channel package.

I will get a monthly discount on Dish through TDS. That is a given. I am amazed how expensive MetroCast is! Wow. Don’t even mention ‘Packages’! They are a ripoff! I get FREE VoIP with Google Voice. Why do I need to pay for a voice package. Have it already. Thank you.

I will keep you posted. This was but the opening salvo.

June is going to be busy. Lease on the KIA also comes to an end; June 27. At least we are all agreed on the replacement plan for that. One or more Jags!
