January 20, 2019, Blood Red Lunar Eclipse Over Central New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

Despite the HUGE storm we had, clouds cleared around 8pm and the moon was visible.

I took this picture, with my Nikon P900 superzoom, 2-minutes after midnight. It was 0°F (-18°C). It was cold and I was standing there WITHOUT a jacket. The cold affected the Nikon more than I! This is probably way outside its operating temperature. (I haven’t checked.) The autofocus was struggling and it was handheld. Hence the blur. To be honest, I didn’t really care. It was just this dim, orange disc. So, this is the best, I have. Enjoy.

January 20, 2019, Lunar Eclipse Most Likely Obscured In New Hampshire By Clouds.

I was worried about this. Then I heard about the big storm. That got me more concerned. The eclipse, however, is going to be late. That might help. But, this is just an early heads up. Don’t get your hopes up. You will see a lot about the eclipse on the media, but clouds might be a real problem for us. OK? Sorry.

Think – Today: Why Do Men Have Facial Hair & Women Don’t … Beyond Just Hormones?

by Anura Guruge

thinktodaybanner
il_fullxfull-524575599_pblgIt is easy to just say ‘testosterone’ — but that begs the question as to why testosterone produces profuse facial hair? Was their an evolutionary advantage. Worth thinking about.

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Consistory” — Comes from the Latin consistorium for ‘sitting together. So it could apply to any group of people sitting together. Since the 10th century (meaning as of 1,100 years AGO), however, the word ‘consistory’ has come to be associated with meeting between the Pope (in Rome) and his Cardinals (i.e., the highest echelons of the Catholic clergy). A consistory is the equivalent of a papal cabinet meeting. At the start, when all the cardinals lived in or around Rome these consistories took place at least once a week. No so anymore. There are essentially two major types of consistory: mandatory (in terms of attendance) and optional (meaning only those that happen to be in Rome need to attend). The pope may convene a mandatory consistory (called ‘extraordinary’) for any number of reasons, to discuss the status of the Church, to formulate future strategy, to discuss a serious transgression or to formalize the Canonization of a major Saint. But, the general media only reports consistories when they involve the creation of new cardinals as was the case on Saturday, November 19, 2016. So many assume that a consistory is just for creating new cardinals. Not so.

Think – Today: What Is A Consistory?

by Anura Guruge

thinktodaybanner
redhatIt will be in the news this weekend, November 19 – 20, 2016. ‘Consistory’. You must have heard the word before. This blog has posts related to it. So what is it?

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “U.S. Presidential inauguration on January 20” — This only came to be as of January 23, 1933 when the Twentieth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. Prior to that the inaugurations were held on March 4. In the 18th & 19th century logistics meant that the votes cast in November may not be fully counted and validated until December (if not later). Hence the March 4 date. But by 1930s this had become too long a ‘Lame Duck’ period. So the 20th Amendment. It is not documented as to why January 20th was selected. It might have been to coincide with it being the 20th amendment. That would have been cute. It can also be thought of as the last day of the 3rd week in January. The first inauguration after the ratification was in 1937. January 20, 1937 was on a Wednesday.

Think – Today: Why Is The U.S. Presidential Inauguration Always On January 20, Irrespective Of The Day Of Week?

by Anura Guruge

thinktodaybanner
bill_clintonThe next one will be, rain or shine, and whether it falls on a Sunday or Wednesday, on January 20, 2017. Why is it always (as far as you can remember) always on January 20? Why?

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Famous early 20th century scientists and Google” — We will never know the answer, one way or another. All we can do is speculate, and there are pros and cons (so to speak). Some of these famous scientists, Einstein for one, were original thinkers. They didn’t rely too much upon prior work done by others. By that was not an absolute. At some point in their life they must have done some research to get to where they were — and Google could have helped. There is also the matter that, ‘then’ compared to now, there wasn’t as much of a body of prior work that they could have called upon — with or without Google. But it is also true that there were numerous situations where a scientist would spend years solving a problem only discover that somebody else had already solved it unbeknownst to them! Google could have minimized that. It is also the case that scientists were sometimes totally unaware of germane published work done by their contemporaries. It is claimed that Hubble (the famed cosmologist) went for years without being aware of Einstein’s work. Google could have helped. So, we will never know. Then there is the matter that Google can be a huge distraction and thus a potential time-waster! On balance, though, it might be safe to say that Google probably could have helped these famous scientists.

I watched live, on CNN. Made a point to see it.
Didn’t think it would effect me much.
It was a done deal. This wasn’t like 2009.
But, I cried. Cried through all 55 seconds of it.
Tears just kept rolling down.
What a great moment, one that I didn’t think we would ever see.
I am optimistic.
