Racism Is A Spectrum. Is Anybody At ‘0’? I Sure Am NOT!

by Anura Guruge

Racism isn’t just black & white.

Racism exists in all cultures. We have all heard, in the context of WWII, how racist the Japanese & Chinese are.

Brown folks like I can be terrible racist.

Just a couple of days ago I was in stitches reading about a famous, black West Indian cricket captain who was very aggrieved to discover that the nickname he was called by some of his Indian teammates when he was playing cricket in India was extremely racist. They, all brown (like I), was calling him a ‘blackie’. SMILE.

I am a racist — though, of course, I have a white wife (& she wasn’t the first). Actually, it is possible that I am more of a racist than my wife. She accuses me daily (if not hourly) of being judgemental.

So, what is this all about? What am I leading at.

I have, of course, been thinking. Race, quite rightly, is very much in the forefront. I have no issues with that.

Winston Churchill, and his statue in London, was in the news today. Got me thinking. Yes, Winston was probably slightly more of a racist than I, but by how much?

Lincoln must have had some racial biases. I am convinced that no adult can claim to be at ‘0’ when it comes to racism. I don’t think it is possible.

Most folks who knew my adoptive mother, & she knew a lot of people (given that 3,000 people attended her funeral, & that was just in Sri Lanka), would claim that she had to be the most inclusive person they had every encountered since she was her own mini-U.N. But, in private she was quite the racist. Not a nasty racist. Just a common or garden racist. Among other things she so did not want me to marry anyone white!

I think you are getting my drift.

I could be wrong, BUT I think if we can stay below the 40% mark we are doing good. Yes, of course, there will be those below 40%. I know a few that might qualify. The problem is with those that are beyond the 70% mark.

Oh, and all don’t forget that racist come in all colors.

Today, May 20, Is “National Streaming Day” 2016 (Per Roku).

by Anura Guruge

Since I am a HUGE fan of Roku I am HAPPY to celebrate “National Streaming Day 2016” with them and you.

If nothing else I plan to watch Day 2 highlights of the England vs. Sri Lanka 1st Test, from Headingley (Leeds), on “One Sports“, via my Roku tonight. I watched Day 1 highlights last night — thanks to Roku.

Did YOU know that ‘roku’ means six (6) in Japanese?

It was the founder’s sixth attempt! Cool. He was on CNBC this morning — which is how I heard about this.

Yes, now that I have CONVINCED myself that my next BIG camera (not counting a ‘GoPro’ equivalent I just bought because the girls want one for Christmas) will the supposed Fuji X-T2 I am, of course, doing my diligence on Fuji and their cameras.

I have done some, though not extensive, research on the X-T1 vs. X-Pro 1. From everything I can see the X-Pro 1 is now a folly. The X-T1 is superior to it in every way other than for the fact that it does NOT look like an old rangefinder and does not have an Optical Viewfinder (OVF). Got that. I have to believe that Fuji no longer sells many X-Pro 1s. That is fine and fair. Most people who want a Fuji X-family camera are probably opting, despite the higher price, for the X-T1.

To bring out a X-Pro 2, especially without 4K video (though that bothers me naught), does not make sense. From my research the ONLY meaningful improvement that the X-Pro 2 will have over the X-Pro 1 is higher resolution — at least 24MP vs. the current 16MP. Yes, of course, that is never to be sneezed at. 16MP is on the low side and 24MP, in 2016, is ‘Goldilocks’.

But the PRIME APPEAL of the X-Pro is its retro look. My contention is that those that like the retro look probably already think that 16MP is way beyond what they need. Lets face it you can take some pretty fine images with 16MP.

The reason I am waiting for the X-T2 is the higher resolution. But as we already discussed the X-T1 is a better camera, technically and in practice, that the X-Pro 1. So a X-T2 makes a lot of sense. Not so a X-Pro 2.

Just like the rather stupid a68 Sony announced last month. Marginal cameras searching for a niche. These Japanese camera manufacturers, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, as I broached upon yesterday, really are in need of some ADULT supervision. Just remember camera companies can go UNDER. Kodak. Polaroid.

Digital Camera Makers Canon, Nikon, Sony et. al. Are ALL LOSING Money!

Watching the gay abandon with which these Japanese companies roll out extremely marginal digital camera offerings — e.g., Canon Rebel T6i vs T6s — you would NOT realize that they are ALL bleeding money like crazy.

Yes, there is HUGE undisciplined and unrestrained mismanagement. Canon, Nikon and Sony could save MILLIONS of dollars a year IF they would just rationalize their digital camera offerings and concentrate on just providing a few ‘best in class’ products rather than hundreds of hard to differentiate models.

Lets us NOT forget Kodak and Polaroid.

Both of these U.S. companies were iconic pioneering GIANTS. They are basically GONE!

So cameras companies can stumble, badly, and end up in death spirals.

With smartphone cameras eating into digital camera sales on a daily basis I expect a MAJOR shakedown and consolidation of the digital camera market over the next 18 months.

IT HAS TO HAPPEN.

These companies have to play smarter. The current situation is untenable.

The BLOODY Japanese are back at it — illegally and immorally KILLING innocent whales, for meat, under the blatantly deceptive claim of ‘Research’.

Yes, it is an OUTRAGE.

Yes, the ‘Sea Shepherds‘ of ‘Whale War’ fame did TRY — incredibly ineptly though it may have been — to try and put a dent into the mauradings of the BLOODY Japanese. But it appears they have given up — among other things with ‘Paul Watson’, their founder, in deep legal trouble.

This year — RIGHT NOW — the ‘Sea Shepherds’ are setting off in the star-crossed M/Y Steve Irwin, from Australia, BUT they are not, per their own publicity, going after the BLOODY Japanese. Instead they are after commercial outfitters illegally poaching Antarctic and Patagonian toothfish (a.k.a. Chilean sea bass). That is a far cry from whales!

So it is currently up to the Australian government to try and do something about the BLOODY Japanese killing whales in THEIR backyard BUT as we saw with the Malaysian Air MH370 search the Australian government can easily give the ‘Sea Shepherds’ a good run for their money when it comes to bumbling incompetence.

Yes, whale hunting bothers me. Always has.

Of course I knew we celebrated Poppy Day in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. Despite the crazy talk from some of late about Sri Lanka’s place in the British Commonwealth etc. we can’t deny our 200 years of being a British dominion. So, of course we are part of the Poppy Day tradition — and, though I am not sure of the numbers, I know that Ceylon did provide some men to fight in WW I and WW II. Plus Lord Mountbatten had his WW II HQ in Ceylon for awhile. That is why we got bombed by the Japs. [You really should check that link for very rare footage from the Japanese themselves.]

To be honest I couldn’t remember Poppy Day in Ceylon — but remember I left before I was 14 and that was in 1967. My once semi-photographic memory now has many gaps. There are events and places in Ceylon that I still have total recall of down to the last details. But, today, when I went looking for pictures and saw an image of kids, dressed in white, carrying collection tins for Poppy Day — it came back. I HAD DONE THAT. My adoptive mother, a social butterfly, involved with umpteen charity events, had us going around collecting for many things — but I now remember the Poppies.

Here are some pictures, I found today, on the Web, of Poppy Day in Ceylon — Sri Lanka.

Just a snapshot. There must be more. I will e-mail one of my cousins, not the most reliable of folks, and try and see if I can find out what is happening in 2013.
