I had never heard of this movie, and was slightly distressed to realize that I had no familiarity, whatsoever, with the type of cell that was being talked about and why such cells were so important.

HBO aired it a few weekends ago as their Saturday night ‘feature’ and I DVRed it because of that — and we watched it, over a couple of nights, earlier this week.

That Oprah starred in it mattered nowt to I, since I can ‘take her, or leave her‘ and she is not somebody I go ga-ga about.

It was an interesting, intriguing and powerful movie — and gave me another revealing perspective into black lives in the 1950s.

I found the start of the movie — about the cells very confusing and had to go back and watch it again. I still think that they don’t explain all the implications that well — and IF I had the time I would LOVE to read the book. The book is supposed to be very good.

The supposed reaction and behavior of the family was also very confusing, to say the least, and, moreover, very disturbing.

They all came across as being totally wacky in one way or another.

They just didn’t seem to be able to handle the notion that Johns Hopkins had taken some cells from their mother — and that these cells were still dividing and thus continuing to ‘live’. Just seemed way to overblown and dramatic. I have to say it portrayed this family, which happens to be black, in a rather bad light. It sure will confirm some stereotypes.

Definitely worth watching it. Will make you ponder and want to find out more. Glad I watched it. Learned quite a bit and that is always a good thing.
