Barack Obama’s Inspirational Speech On “Mandela Centenary” In South Africa.

by Anura Guruge

Short, abridged ‘5-minute‘ version from NBC News.

Longer ’90-minute’ version also from NBC News.

This is quite the speech. You really should try and listen to at least a part of it. So, inspirational.

The GREAT Nelson Mandela, whom Obama referred to as a ‘Giant’, would have been both proud and happy with this speech. They liked and respected each other. Can YOU imagine what Nelson would make of Donald Trump?

Though he and I had a few major disagreements (and even some blowouts) over ‘Obamacare‘, I have always liked the man and enjoyed watching him speak. (And, yes, I did campaign for him, like a black, going door-to-door, three times.)

It is so refreshing to see Obama SMILE and look happy when he speaks. Trump looks like he is in urgent need of Extra-Strength ‘Preparation H‘.

Obama has a tremendous sense of humor. Listen to the opening.

The South African audience, ALAS, totally misses one of his BEST punchlines. He talks about it being cold in South Africa and how he is wearing long johns. Then, he says, deadpan: “You know I was born in Hawaii“. They didn’t get it.

Great speech. Tremendous for “Mandela Day”.

Two GREAT men. What an honor and pleasure.

The 2016 Al Smith Dinner, a HUGE annual New York city fundraiser for Catholic causes (started in 1945), was ‘one for the ages’ with both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump, delivering speeches (or ‘roasts’ to be more accurate) — as is a longstanding custom on election years.

This year, i.e., 2017, the keynote speaker was House Speaker, Paul Ryan, a practicing Catholic from Wisconsin, his father of Irish descent. Ryan, as was to be expected, did make some jokes at the expense of Trump. Whether he cleared them with Trump ahead of the dinner has yet to be established. We will have to see if Trump reacts.

But, here is the whole story — so to speak, video and transcript.

Of course it was watchable and mildly compelling given that it, of course, had a dusting of Spielberg magic cast upon it. It is “OK”. It works, quite well, as a comedy. Yes, people were laughing. Teischan, 9, was scared, but that was about it. Not a scary movie for teenagers and adults.

What was truly SCARY was how far and blatant product placement has become. Jeeezzz. It came across more like a long commercial with some out-of-control dinosaurs running around.

Yes, I am the first to admit that I am not the right demographics for this movie. Dinosaurs don’t excite me much and I can’t say I am a fan of the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise though I have seen the original movie, on TV, a couple of times. I can’t swear to it but I might even have seen “The Lost World“.

Going to see this movie was a last minute decision, on Father’s Day, predicated by the rain. We were hoping to go to the ocean. But that wasn’t going to work. So I suggested, after watching the trailer etc. to make sure that it was “OK” for Teischan, to go see this at Cinemagic in Portsmouth, N.H. Others must have had the same idea. IT WAS PACKED. It was a zoo. It was a mad house. NO ADULT SUPERVISION. No lines. People barging in. It was like a meat market in Calcutta. People can be so ignorant and rude. Cinemagic should be ashamed of themselves BUT they were making so much money that they wouldn’t care. IF there had been an emergency it would have been serious. Not a single adult in sight. I even asked for one. Just kids TRYING to run the show. Kind of similar to what you see in the movie.

Confirmed my personal stereotypes. Indians make terrible helicopter pilots. Indians aren’t great at making pressing corporate decisions. Yes, watch out MSFT shareholders. That Mercedes Benz was the placement-driven vehicle of choice CRACKED me up. Bingo. A theme park that made a LOT of bad decisions had made another howler. They opted for Mercedes Benz vehicles. So the subtext here would be that if the Jurassic World management was MORE competent they would have gone with a better make of cars. Classic.

By all means go see it. Works to an extent as a comedy with rather lame and predictable romance angle. As far as being scary, you will get more when you buy the tickets.

2000 movie about a Chocolate shop in France. Click for IMDB listing.

I will readily confess, what drew me to this movie, which I had never heard of before, was it ‘marigold’ poster which looked so much like that of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ — a movie that we adored. I know that the sequel ‘Marigold Hotel II’ is out and I am keeping an eye for it on Amazon Prime Video. That is basically how I found this easy-to-enjoy, set in France, ‘Chocolat‘-with curry. As soon as we saw that it was meant to be an Indo-comedy — with Helen Mirren — we were sold. It was NOT (at least last week) included for free as Amazon Prime. We had to rent it. We watched the trailer, heard one of the Indian jokes, and decided that it was well worth the $6.

It was fun. Incongruous. A one-star Michelin restaurant where everybody insists on talking in English. It is, in the end, more of a heartwarming skill, talent and love will always prevail movie as opposed to a genuine comedy. Easy on the eye and you can literally smell the delicacies being concocted.

Definitely worth watching if you like European comedies starring Indians and with an Indian twist. We enjoyed it.

A New Oxymoron: ‘George W. Bush Library’.

Dec2013x125

.
by Anura Guruge

Simply stated an ‘oxymoron‘ is a combination of words that don’t really go together in one sentence. Some classic examples include: ‘army intelligence‘, ‘almost pregnant‘, ‘demilitarized zone‘ etc. You can find a fairly large list here.

Well, I think even his mother (whose picture (honest) has pride of place in our house (but maybe because whose sitting on her lap) would admit that a library is not something that you would normally associate with the ‘Shrub’ — though, of course, I know that his long suffering wife trained to be a librarian. Conan O’Brien, speaking at the ‘White House Correspondents’ Dinner‘ on Saturday night, had this to say: “the new facility has hundreds of documents from the Bush-era, and if you go you can be the first to read them“. Boom, boom. Letterman was more blunt: “The Bush Presidential Library is beautiful, and they have a huge section devoted to weapons of mass destruction, but nobody can find it”.

The sad thing is and I often cringe about this, is that I used to be a staunch supporter of him. I desperately wanted him to win in 2000 and sat in front of my TV, day in and day out, sacrificing my then very lucrative high-tech consulting practice, rooting for him to beat Gore — by any means, legal or otherwise.

I have to grant that he did wrought a miracle when it came to me. I used to be a rabid, ‘to-the-right-of-Margaret-Thatcher‘, ‘Reagan-worshipping‘, conservative. Bush turned me into the Obamaite democrat that I now am. Just for that I am grateful to the ‘shrub’.

It is interesting that the family also realized that it would be embarrassing to have a library associated with the man best described as ‘lacking any intellectual curiosity’. So, they actually do NOT call it a library. Notice, no mention of the word library or books! I rest my case.

That they picked Danica Patrick’s GoDaddy NASCAR car, with the GoDaddy logos clearly emblazoned, could not have been a coincidence. Great publicity for GoDaddy, and I am glad given how they helped me out during the papal transition.

Not sure how GoDaddy pulled off this coup. I don’t think (but I could be wrong) that my President would just succumb to the charms of a GoDaddy wet T-shirt girl. That would have, of course, worked with Clinton.

So I have to think that some real mulla, in the millions, was involved in this — either as campaign donations in the past or as a direct payment for this priceless ad.

That is what confuses me. I could be wrong. GoDaddy could be an Obama supporter, which would make me very happy.

GoDaddy, in the end, is Bob Parsons company; he being the founder and now the Executive Chairman.

I have never had the honor of directly interacting with Bob.

But, I have had exceptional service and support from his staff in his office. Which is more than I can say about TDS and its CEO’s staff.

When GoDaddy was pulling out all the stops to help me deal with the huge spike in hits I was getting on my pope blog, I was told that Bob had heard about my problem and was personally monitoring my blog to make sure that it was coping with the traffic demands. I was very grateful. I was going to write a thank you note but was told, explicitly, that it would not be necessary.

Bob Parson is a true maverick and I do admire his style and tastes (and what real, hot-blooded male wouldn’t). So, for all I know, he, like so many high-tech moguls, Hollywood megastars and Warren Buffet could be an Obama supporter. That would neat.

Either way, I loved seeing the GoDaddy plug.

I thoroughly enjoyed the President’s speech and that of Conan O’Brien. Very clever. Very funny. This repartee by Conan had me in stitches: “Speaker Boehner and President Obama are still struggling to get along. President Obama and John Boehner are kind of like a blind date between Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow. In theory, they understand each other’s positions, but deep down, you know nothing’s ever going to happen“. [In case you don’t get it, they are both gay.]

I happened to catch this clip, on ‘Morning Joe‘, on MSNBC, this morning.

I had to watch it over and over again. I was lying in bed (as I am wont to do in the morning), clutching my cup of coffee (kindly provided by my dear wife). I had to put the cup down (on its electric heater) because I was in paroxysms of laughter. It just cracked me up. I laughed, I laughed and I laughed a bit more. Oh, Jon Stewart. I like his stuff on the pope too. I post that on my pope blog. All the good Catholics that read that blog, and we are talking 3,000 a day, dare not visit any joke, uncatholic sites. But, it is OK if they watch it on my site, because mine is a pope site. So, I do this as a public service. Put all the pertinent joke videos on my blog. Whatever anybody says, I always aim to make people happy. But, poor ol’ Mormon Mitt. I am sorry, but he just makes me laugh and all of those that rally though that he could beat my man, my President.
