‘Black Moon’ Today, July 31, 2019, & How It Differs From A ‘Blue Moon’.

by Anura Guruge

The Key Difference:

Black Moon has to be a NEW Moon.

Blue Moon has to a FULL Moon.

Other than that they both refer to an ‘EXTRA’ moon in a given ‘month’.

Blue Moon‘ can mean one of two things:

1. Second full moon within the same calendar month.

2. Third full moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

Black Moon‘, DITTO, but when it applies to a NEW MOON.

So, it means:

1. Second NEW moon within the same calendar month — as is the case this month, i.e., July 2019.

2. Third NEW moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

Both are rare events.

Furthermore, today’s Black Moon is a Supermoon — i.e., it is closer to Earth than normal.

Elderly Pedestrian Killed Just Outside ‘Acadia National Park’, September 12, 2017 — “Chart Room Restaurant” Parking Lot.

“The Chart Room” is a well-known landmark just a few miles prior to the MAIN Hulls Cove entrance to the Acadia National Park. Click to ENLARGE. Created by Anura Guruge.

As far as I know, and as far as I can tell, this is the only fatal accident anywhere close to Acadia National Park in 2017 — so far. The prior major accident, on July 11, 2017, was non-fatal. Prior to that was the motorcycle crash, on Cadillac Mountain, September 4, 2016.

To be fair this was NOT inside the Park but it is as close to the Park as you can get without actually being inside. As you can see in the report, Park Rangers were at the accident to handle traffic.

Well known landmark. Hard to miss. Always crowded.

We were, of course, at Acadia over the Labor Day Weekend, this year — as we have since 2013. Traffic was crazy a couple of times BUT no accidents as far as I heard.

Happened to find it serendipitously around 11:20pm on Thursday, July 21, when I, as I often did, checked the electronic program guide to see what interesting stuff was coming up on the ‘Smithsonian Channel’. I DVR a fair amount from the Smithsonian and watch it if there is no decent cricket to watch.

Non-Fatal Car Crash At ‘Acadia National Park’ July 7, 2017 — 7 In Honda Odyssey, Minor Injuries.

Anura Guruge Acadia Park accident map

Where the accident happened, 0.5 miles south of the entrance to Cadillac Mountain Road. Van was heading northbound towards Bar Harbor.

We had been there just 10-days earlier — in a 7-seater van, in our case a Nissan Quest as opposed to a Honda Odyssey.

I feel for them. Great testimonial Honda that they plunged 30′ feet down an embankment and only the 60-old driver suffered any injuries and even those were slight. Good job they didn’t hurt or kill anyone. Falling asleep at the wheel — just after noon! Possible that they got up early that morning to drive up from Boxborough, Mass., and that he was tired. Not good.

If you are even halfway observant of these things it has been very obvious. A sad reflection of OUR times — though that does NOT mean that Drump is right (which is not surprising given that he is rarely right).

MarketWatch” did a story on this too — but on a National scale.

It is crazy that there is still confusion as to the sensor size and format. Of course it will be a Micro Four-Thirds. That is what the sensor format is on the Panasonic Lumix LX100 and Panasonic will not mess with that.

The big issue is whether the LX200, in contrast to the LX100, will ever use the full-size of the sensor.

Interesting that they have brought forward the announcement date. They probably don’t want the Pentax K-70 full disclosure on July 15, 2016 to steal too much thunder given that both cameras will be in the same price range.

Flowers Of Acadia National Park — July, 2016 (Part I).

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

All taken with the Fuji X-T1 I rented.

These were in the main taken on the periphery
of the Park, e.g., Somes Sound, Bar Harbor
& Northeast Harbor.
Another post of flowers within the Park Soon.

During the Summer months and well into September Acadia National Park and the whole area around it is festooned with tantalizing flowers — off all shapes, sizes and colors — many wild but also quite a bit diligently (but lovingly) planted and nurtured to add to the ambience of this magical area. Though we live South of Acadia we in New Hampshire do not have 1/20th of the flowers that abound the Acadia area. It is so noticeable. I love to take pictures of the flora. Interestingly enough there isn’t that much fauna that you in this area — though we were lucky enough, once again, to see a solitary deer fairly close to the “Kebo Valley Golf Club” which is where we invariably see them.
