‘Finding Dory’ (3D) — Splendid, Touching Kid’s Movie.

Disney • PIXAR know the formula and were unlikely to get it wrong. A splendid kid’s animation. Just as it is meant to be. Well crafted story with neat twists and turns and a lovable cast of characters, especially ‘Hank‘ the octopus (or septapus, given he lost a tentacle). Cute, touching and heartwarming. Just when you think you have the ending worked out they throw in a neat, ingenious twist. Slightly educational too — kids are unlikely to forget that octopi have 3 hearts. Lots of positive messaging for kids about aspirations, goals, coping with limitations etc.

The 3D was muted. Nothing dramatic for the sake of showcasing the 3D. But the 3D adds to the presence and texture of the characters. The bulging of Dory’s eyes would not be the same outside of 3D.

Not sure whether it was as good as “Finding Nemo” — but “Nemo”, 13 year ago, was groundbreaking on so many fronts. In the intervening years we have become attuned to the technological and storytelling magic. That it is essentially a sequel to “Nemo” is neat.

Piper” the de rigueur 6 minute PIXAR ‘technology preview’ short that accompanies “Dory” is also incredibly cute. As always stunningly showcases PIXAR’s technological mastery.

Full Disclosure: I am a Disney shareholder and owned PIXAR for a very long time before it was acquired by Disney.

P.S., We saw it at the Concord, N.H. “Regal Cinema“, 7:10pm show. Other than us there were just 5 others in the theatre.

“Mortdecai” — The 2015 Movie A Mindless But Enjoyable Little Romp Especially If You Are Into Classic British Farce.

Most nights, between around 9:15 pm to 10:15 pm Deanna and I watch a movie. This is also when I have my dinner. Since we are talking, at most, an hour we never ever finish a movie in one go. Usually takes us 2 to 3 nights to see one from start to finish. Then to complicate matters, earlier in the evening, starting at 6pm we have our ‘Family TV’ hour. Not all the time (since that is also when we watch “Downton Abbey” etc.) we watch movies during that slot too. So we can have two movies going over multiple evenings — with the kids finishing “Out of Africa” last night.

Well we, i.e., Deanna and I, watched “Mortdecai” the last couple of nights. I had found it on Amazon Prime. It was fun. Deanna laughed out loud, quite a bit and that is always a good sign. Amusing. The mimicked accents a bit hard to follow at times. But a jolly Classic British romp, exquisitely filmed.

If you haven’t seen it check it out. Not great, but not half bad. You will have fun.

Kung Fu Panda 3 (3D) — Brilliant In All Dimensions.

Sunday, February 28, 2016 having been the last day of February school vacations I took the kids to the 6:30pm showing of “Kung Fu Panda 3“, in 3D, at the “Regal 10” in Concord, New Hampshire — after over trip to Knight’s Pond. I like “Kung Fu Panda”, so I was glad when Teischan chose it out of the list of movies we told her were showing ‘locally’.

It was, as I knew it would be, brilliant. Exactly what a ‘kids’ animation is meant to be: entertaining, visually LAVISH, lots of action, funny, cute, adorable etc. etc. The quality of the rendering is breathtaking. So much detail. The artwork, even with the credits, is WORLD CLASS. 3D used judiciously but with flair. They even did the credits in 3D — showing 3 layers. Very clever. Definitely two paws up. Definitely worth taking the kids — and YOU will enjoy it too.
