I Think I Am ‘OK’ With “Boris Johnson’s” Monumental Win In The UK — Because I So, So Badly Want ‘Brexit’.

by Anura Guruge

From the BBC. This was an historic win.

I wanted ‘Brexit‘ way back 44-years AGO in 1975. Yes, 1975 — 44-years ago.

I proudly voted ‘NO’ in that 1st ‘Brexit’ referendum in 1975. I was among the 20% who wanted to leave at that juncture. But, WE, obviously, were RIGHT. It took the others 40-years to realize what we already knew.

I like open-borders BUT do NOT agree that being part of the EU is good for my Britain.

As such I am glad that Boris Johnson won and that he COULD now make Brexit a reality — though I am not, yet, convinced that it is a forgone conclusion. Anything could still happen.

I am infamous in the U.S., over the last 17-years as a bleeding-heart democrat. But, NOTE I was careful to say 17-years.

I was a Regan-worshipping Republican prior to that — and I used ‘worshipping’ advisedly.

Way back, before I turned 21, I was a Bernie Sanders! Yes …

But, then I started making money. SMILE.

I was accused of being to THE RIGHT of (Dear) Margaret Thatcher.

Though I became a Democrat in the U.S. (and worked like a black to get Obama elected), I have never sympathized with ‘Labor’ in the U.K.

Crazy, isn’t it.

But, the UK and US political spectrums are different. For a start the UK already has a sacrosanct single-payer medical system open to all, the NHS. So, come UK politics I have never had a major issue with the UK Conservatives.

Boris Johnson is going to be GOOD FOR I. The UK Sterling Pound will be stronger which means that the two pensions I get from the UK will be slightly higher. It is not much so the increase will be marginal. But, better than a kick in the teeth. Boris will also be good for the stock market.

But, Boris scares I. So, I will have to keep an eye on him. Let’s start with Brexit. Lets see if he can make it happen.

Fingers crossed.

For NOW I am happy.

This is why I REFUSE to own, drive or touch a German car — even today.

I explained, in this post, my epiphany against most things Germans after seeing the destruction wrought on Liverpool (the home of the ‘Beatles‘ in England) 35-years after the end of WW II.

And the irony. Given roots in Ceylon I do not have any family members or folks that I knew who served, let alone died, in WW II. All the WW II veterans I have met, and I have met quite a few, have been British, American, Canadian, Australian and yes, German! [I skied in Austria with a German who lost his leg in WW II. They had rope lifts — as is common in Europe. He, given that he only had one leg and as such one ski, needed someone on the other side of the lift to compensate him — essentially to have their skis pointed at an angle to straighten him out. He would wait at the bottom of the ski life until I appeared. Then he would ask me.] But I still feel very strongly about all the ALLIES that served, suffered and died during WW I and WW II.

That is why I am will only now own American, British, Korean or Indian cars.

I knew nothing of him, not even his name, until he was elected the new Labor Leader replacing the Indian-looking Ed Miliband. But over the last few days I have watched a few ‘clips’ about him on “Sky News” and done a bit of reading. He seems like decent, genuine bloke — that I can relate to. We are of the same generation.

However, this claim that he refused to sing the National Anthem at a memorial service to remember the heroes of the Battle of Britain bothers me greatly. What I do NOT know is whether this was specific to the occasion or whether he, known to have been a vehement anti-monarchist, refuses to sing the National Anthem, point-blank. Either way this is a PROBLEM. I can sympathize with his pacifist agenda. But HONORING the HEROES of the GLORIOUS Battle of Britain transcends pacifism. We are talking straight PATRIOTISM. IF not for all those that sacrificed all they had to fight WW II the World would be a very different place. So please let us NOT confuse pacifism with the sacrifices and bravery of those that gave their all in WW I and WW II.

It is also ‘OK’ to be an anti-monarchist. I was one a long, long time ago, before the Queen won me over, head-over-heels.

My problem is that YOU cannot be Her Majesty’s Leader of the Opposition and refuse to sing OUR Glorious National Anthem (and yes, I do have issues with its theme and words, especially now that Britain is very much multireligious and multicultural). The National Anthem is symbolic. It, like the flag, parliament, and the monarchy, HAVE to be RESPECTED for what it is. That is not negotiable. This is a problem.

I do not give a monkey’s about his dress. That is up to him and yet again I appreciate. But the National Anthem is a whole different matter. I am NOT amused. I will keep an eye, and ear, open on this.
