‘Trinidad and Tobago’ Gained Independence This Day 55-Years Ago; August 31, 1962.

by Anura Guruge

From what I can see Google has never done a Google Doodle for this Independence Day.

‘Trinidad and Tobago’ is special to any cricket lover — hence my interest.

The list of GREATS from Trinidad and Tobago is long and storied and begins with Learie Constantine — who, alas, was way before my time. Then there is Brian Lara.

Then there is Deryck Murray, Ian Bishop, the Bravo brothers, Ravi Rampaul etc. etc.

My favorite, however, is Larry Gomes from the 1970s.

Here are 4 links I have found so far:

1/ 74 minute highlights video, quality that not great, from ‘cricketcountry.com’.

2/ 55 minute highlights video on YouTube — of decent quality.

3/ 89 minute highlights video highlights from 4cric.com; very poor quality.

4/ 15 minute HD quality video on ESPN.

Even prior to this gem of an innings I have been following and watching Marlon Samuels with growing fascination and admiration. I think he is the best of the current crop and reminds me of an amalgamation of Gordon Greenidge, Larry Gomes and Desmond Haynes! That can’t be bad. He has, however, been playing at International level for 12 years. So he has to consolidate and really get moving from here.
