I Have $24 Leather Straps On Both My Garmin Fenix 6s And They Look Great.

I like leather straps on my Garmins. It really started when I got my Garmin MARQ Explorer with its gorgeous (initially) $250 strap. No question. That is the nicest leather strap I have seen for a Garmin. But, I did not want to spoil that strap wearing in 24×7, especially with a lot of sweat or swimming (though Garmin claims that this will improve it ‘patenia’). So, I experimented with some other cheaper leather straps — including Garmin’s much cheaper, standard leather strap.

They were ‘OK’ but felt ‘plasticy’, didn’t have any stitching and tended to show scratches. So, I continued looking on Amazon and eBay. A couple of months ago I came across these $23.99 TRUMiRR straps. I got the darker one. It looked great and it did not quickly show wear-and-tear like the previous one. So, I got the light one too. I now have them on my two Fenix 6s. I think they look great and they work amazingly well. I stopped wearing my Garmins when I shower so as to stop getting the straps wet. It will become interesting next Summer when I start swimming. Will I start wearing one of my many silicone straps. I have never had a nylon strap and really should try one.

But, I wanted to share these TRUMiRR straps with you. I know you will be happy with them. All the best. PAX.

Garmin Fenix 6 Pro: Metal Clasps On The Nylon Bands Might Be A Problem.

Two weeks ago, once I learned that the Fenix 6 was on deck ready to be announced, I wrote this post about strap options for the Fenix 6. The second picture, above, is from that post.

In there I said: “Leather straps with the metal clasp at the end are a DISASTER. They will SCRATCH your expensive watch“.

Now, I see that Garmin is using metal clasps on the nylon bands. Yikes.

I have not had a Garmin strap with metal clasps. It is possible that they have better clearance and that the metal does not touch the body. I definitely would check on this before getting a nylon strap. You would hate to scratch a $900 watch.

I am also ‘amused’ (actually NOT) about Garmin’s $100 price for their nylon straps. WOW. Yes, I know the leather costs as much — and I justified that. But, isn’t there a difference between leather and nylon?

I am a Garmin (GRMN) shareholder and have been for a few years. So, I should, in theory, be happy. But, I am not. Just looks like Garmin is losing the plot. What do YOU think.

But, just check on those metal clasps. It could be an issue.

Strap Options For The New Garmin Fenix 6, 6X etc. [August 28, 2019].

by Anura Guruge

I don’t wear the $250 strap daily. But, I do like a leather strap.

Plenty of options, THOUGH NOT cheap, from Garmin. Click image to access page.

So, as discussed yesterday, the BIG immediately noticeable features of the new Garmin Fenix 6 line is going to be the 1.4″ watch face (from the prior 1.2″ standard) and the leather strap.

While Garmin has ‘always’ offered leather straps they have not come as standard on running watches. With the Fenix 6 it will and for us runners that will be a change. I, however, already went through this when I got my Garmin MARQ Expedition. That also came with (gorgeous) leather strap — albeit, then priced, at $250. But, Garmin also included a black silicone strap as well. That was good. I am pretty sure that Garmin will do the same with the Fenix 6, i.e., include a free silicone strap along with the leather.

As with the Fenix 5 (Plus) we will have the ‘S’, standard & ‘X’ models. Though the display is 0.2″ bigger I hope they stick with the standard 20-mm, 22-mm and 26-mm QuickFit strap options. That would give us the most flexibility. If they opt for a bigger strap we will be screwed — at least initially.

Then there is the SHOULDER option, on the black silicone, that started with the MARQ. It fills in the gap and is very, very impressive.

Yes, you can get that black strap with the shoulder, just for 22mm, from Garmin — but it is $50 more than the standard version. Wow.

If the Fenix 6 comes with Garmin’s $80 leather strap you should be FINE. It is a very durable strap and you can immerse it in water multiple times a day — I DO. It ages and weathers like leather should. I got one of these BECAUSE I didn’t want to wear the expensive MARQ strap, with the white stitching, 24×7.

I also tried a couple of cheap leather straps. Was NOT happy. The leather was cheap and felt (and acted) like cardboard.

Leather straps with the metal clasp at the end are a DISASTER. They will SCRATCH your expensive watch.

So, those are the options. Lot of straps, especially 22mm, BUT they are EXPENSIVE. That is frustrating. Luckily I can get an automatic discount on them. That helps. SMILE. But, it is still not cheap.

Enjoy.

The New Garmin Fenix 6(X) [August 28, 2019], With Its Leather Strap, Reminds Me Of My MARQ Expedition.

by Anura Guruge

Amazon’s PREMATURE Listing From Monday, August 12, 2019.

Click to ENLARGE. Quality is not good. Sorry.

Amazon (if you remember)
did EXACTLY this also
with the Garmin Forerunner 945;
i.e., ‘accidentally’ listed it
weeks before it was announced.

Read about that here — if you have forgotten about that leak.

My Garmin MARQ Expedition
with the CHEAPER Garmin Leather Strap.

I don’t wear the $250 strap daily. But, I do like a leather strap.

Yes, it is the strap that makes me think the Garmin Fenix 6 (and the usual ‘S’ and ‘X’ variants) looks like my MARQ Expedition — but part of that is that I am using the cheaper $60 Fenix 5 leather strap on my MARQ so as not to ruin the expensive MARQ strap.

But, the Fenix 6 is going to be DIFFERENT from anything else we have seen from Garmin. It is going to have a 1.4″ display — compared to the 1.2″ on prior watches of similar ilk, including the Fenix 5X Plus. That is BIG. Very BIG. I like that. But, (damn) no AMOLED again. That irks me, though I have to admit that the sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel display on my MARQ is pretty impressive and pleasing. The Fenix 6 looks like it will have this technology, just on a bigger screen.

I initially thought that the Fenix 6 would be a watered down MARQ Athlete — with a leather strap. But, having studied the Amazon picture, long and hard, the Fenix 6 does not have the MARQ bezel.

It, with the exposed screws, reminds me of my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus (that I traded-in for my MARQ).

I am pretty sure that from a hardware standpoint — i.e., the all important sensors — the Fenix 6 will use what is now found in the MARQ/Forerunner 945. That should be pretty good.

The rest, from what I can see, is ALL software! That means much of it, if not all of it, will be also available on the Forerunner 945, MARQ and possibly even the Fenix 5 Plus. Garmin does that. Think back to ‘Fall Detection‘. This is good.

The new software features, viz., Grade-Adjusted Pace Monitoring and ‘environmentally adjusted’ VO2 Max, seems pretty esoteric. We have seen the other features, music, Pulse Ox, maps on other models.

I was surprised by the $950 price tag — albeit for the 6X model. That still means a Fenix 6 will probably be in the $800 — $850 range. That is premium pricing (and that coming from one who is wearing a $1,750 MARQ).

The Forerunner 945, at $600, will probably end up with all the software features — but without the BIGGER display.

I will keep you posted over the next few weeks.

Yes, I will get a Fenix 6 for evaluation. SMILE.

I will also do another post on Garmin leather straps.

The Higher Price Of A Garmin Leather Strap Is Definitely Justifiable Especially With A ‘Metal’ Body.

Garmin leather strap MARQ Expedition Anura Guruge

Yes, this Garmin leather strap is on my MARQ Expedition.

Yes, it comes with its own leather strap. But, that is a rather special, EXPENSIVE strap.

Original leather strap on the MARQ Expedition.

Though Garmin says that the strap will AGE with grace, I rather not wear in 24×7 and get it wet more than it needs to.

Yes, the MARQ also comes with its own, special — bigger shouldered — silicone strap (in black).

But, I prefer a leather strap on the MARQ.

I tried two CHEAP leather straps from Amazon. Big mistake.

The brown one chafed against the titanium body and also scratched easily.

The black one has a metal fitting that rubs against the body.

So, I learned. The Garmin costs more, BUT you get a much, much, much better leather strap. Yes, I have already showered with it and it dries in minutes.
