I think that I MUST have seen this phenomenon before, BUT I can’t honestly remember. There was lots of it in this one area. I took these pictures. I then had to use Google LENS to look it up. Neat.

Yes, the explanation makes sense. He have been in the 50Fs the last few days, BUT this morning the temperature was below freezing. So, BINGO. Neat. Really pretty. I had to break some to make sure it was indeed ice. It was on a trail that is rarely used by anyone but I. So, I was NOT harming anybody else’s enjoyment.

eBay Buyers Can Be So Pigheaded & Short-Sighted.

by Anura Guruge

This morning, I happened to look at what this Tamron superzoom was selling for at eBay. I had one to sell (but, no more since I got a very SWEET trade-in deal from my friend Kurt Seelig at ‘Cardinal Camera’.

What I saw made me SMILE.

People bidding on the ‘For Auction’ item ignoring the ‘Buy it Now’ offers.

IF you really wanted this lens why would you make a BID for $110.14 (and then wait 2-days to see if you will get OUTBID) when for 6 cents more — yes 6 CENTS more — you could get a refurbished lens from a ‘Top Rated PLUS’ seller?

Plus another that will entertain offers.

I understand what happens. I have bought & sold a TON on eBay & was a proud eBay shareholder for at least a decade. SMILE.

People get caught up in the bidding & YES, there are the automatic bids.

But, you have to SMILE.

I have been a seller in similar situations, watching folks bid all around you when they would be better off trying to buy my listing.

C’est la vie. Life goes on.

Making Sense Of Canon’s Supposed “Mirrorless-To-DSLR” Converter.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Annotations are mine. Original from ‘petapixel.com’.

I saw the PetaPixel post and studied the picture. I immediately grasped what it was all about. Then, it took me a good 10-minutes, during a leisurely walk in the dark with the dogs, to work out what it was all about.

It is NOT a lens adapter. We already have plenty of them — such as the ‘EF-EOS R Mount Adapter (with Control Ring)‘ shown above.

This is a hulking BIG convertor replete with retractable mirror, a pentaprism equivalent, an OPTICAL VIEWFINDER and maybe even a focusing unit.

When you attach it to a Canon mirrorless camera, e.g., my Canon EOS RP, via the lens mount you will have a camera with TWO (2) viewfinders — one on top of the other! One electronic (in the body of the mirrorless) and the other OPTICAL above it.

For those that insist that they have to have an optical viewfinder and to speed-up autofocusing.

But, why? Why not just get a DSLR? And that is what this seems all about.

IF Canon is serious and actually releases this, it would mean that they will no longer make high-end DSLRs! About bloody time too.

They will just make mirrorless bodies — and I am totally cool with that. I have and will continue to be committed to mirrorless.

So, in future, all the lens sensors and technology (bar faster autofocus) will be in mirrorless bodies.

Then, those that demand an optical viewfinder will have to get this convertor.

Not sure it will work in practice. The technology will work. It is pretty trivial. Even I could design one of these. Not sure anybody will pay nay good money to buy one. They will switch to Nikon.

Canon, Shamelessly, Has Already Reneged On Promise Of A ‘Control Ring’ On Canon RF Lenses.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access MY post from a couple of months ago.

Though it was pre-announced, Canon in the last few days announced the availability and the pricing for the RF 24-240mm zoom. I hadn’t looked at it much previously because it was not available.

As soon as I looked at it I noticed the absence of the RED Control Ring. Looked harder. It only has two-rings: one for zooming the other for manual focus. IT is a bona fide RF lens, so where is the Control Ring?

I went looking. Here is the answer. It does NOT have a DEDICATED Control Ring!

When you are using auto focus (AF) the focus ring can be used as the Control Ring, BUT that does not work in manual focus mode.

That is very poor and disappointing. Shame on YOU Canon. Talk about breaking a promise so early.

Well, does NOT matter. I will not buy this lens. I wasn’t going to buy Japanese anyway until they stop commercial whaling.

My new Tamron 28-300mm, with vibration control (VC), has better reach, decent image quality and a CONTROL RING because I use it with an adapter that has such a ring. So, Canon you know what you can do with your new 24-240.

‘Control Ring’ On Canon RF Lenses Makes The ‘Canon EOS RP’ Into A Nifty 3-Wheel Camera.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I had plans for that Control Ring well ahead of purchasing my Canon EOS RP 3 weeks ago.

I like as many control wheels as I can on a camera — which is why, for about 6-months, I was totally convinced that the Fuji X-T2 was going to be my dream camera. Now, with this control ring on the lens (or on the lens adapter) I do have a 3-wheel camera.

As I show in the top diagram I assigned ISO control to that ring. Exposure compensation (EV), automatically, is on the rear wheel and since I shoot in ‘Aperture Priority’ mode most of the time, aperture setting is on the front wheel. Works great for I — though I am still getting used to finding the right — of the three rings — on my 24-105mm lens.

But, this is definitely worth keeping in mind. Really makes the Canon EOS RP a joy to use.

Sold My Sony SEL 24-240mm Zoom Yesterday — I Am Now Fully Divested Of All My Sony Kit.

by Anura Guruge

I was hoping to be at this point — i.e., having NO Sony kit — a bit sooner than now. But, that is OK.

I sold my 90mm, my 2nd most used lens, in February 2019. Then I busted my knee. That set me back a few weeks.

The 90mm and Sony a7 II body both sold on eBay within 90-minutes. So, I had kind of got spoiled.

The 24-240mm zoom lens went the full-distance of 7-days — with the price going up $85 in the last few seconds. I guess others aren’t as fond of that lens as I was. It was my favorite lens.

So, I am all set to get a new Canon EOS RP system. This time, I am not going to get many lenses. At most four — BUT now I can get NEW lenses for under $100. This was the ONLY reason I abandoned Sony. The lenses were expensive and you couldn’t get any good all-in-one zooms.

Wish me luck.

Please Castrate Me IF I Ever Buy Anything From Best Buy Again. PLEASE.

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

I Did Not Heed My Own Admonition

& Now I Am $500+ In The Hole.

I am such an IDIOT! So, yes, I deserve to get ripped off and abused and lose $559. My fault. I did NOT follow my own admonition.

There was good mitigating reason. This was a Sony lens and Amazon had a 2-month BACK-ORDER on it. Yes, two-months.

So, I was forced to buy it from Bloody Best Buy. Oh, how I wish I hadn’t.

Well, I got ripped off. Yes, I played right into their hands. Yes, I am an IDIOT.

That is why I deserve to be castrated — though it kind of too late. I should have been castrated when I was 11.

Well, I live, BUT I obviously do NOT learn.

So, PLEASE … please … if you hear that I bought anything from Best Buy just come over and castrate me. I will not protest. I deserve to be castrated.

Yes, I promise NEVER to step into a Best Buy again.

You know the IRONY. I worked as an Epson Product Ambassador at Best Buy and loved it!

Sony E-Mount, PZ 18-105mm — Updating Firmware To Ver. 04.

by Anura Guruge

This, the Version 04 Firmware update, was released on July 27, 2017 — 4 days ago. I read about it on DPReview which I religiously scan, at least once a day, for just such information.

I had never updated firmware on a Sony lens. So I had some trepidations. To be fair to Sony they use the same update mechanism as that for their cameras. So that at least was comforting.

The update proved to be straightforward, painless and quick. Worked just as it was supposed to. Was done in minutes.

However, I have NOT noticed any difference in the lens’ autofocus (AF) prowess. If anything it was worse than it used to be! And I am not kidding. So …

Just letting you know. I would NOT rush to upgrade. Wait and see what others have to say. Check the DPReview forums.

Alton’s Disgrace — Our NEGLECTED Historic Railway Semaphore.

by Anura Guruge

Alton Bay, New Hampshire.

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

I have been trying for 5-years to get the town, i.e., the Town of Alton, to take care of these historic railway semaphores.

They are in theory PROTECTED by some State statute but nobody enforces it.

The ‘Lady’ responsible for taking care of these just does NOT care. She has other, more amusing distractions.

I talked to an Alton ‘Parks & Rec’ employee, who I know, who happened to be there about it. He agreed it was a SHAME.

They should be painted and painted CORRECTLY — at least one red arm. The lens should be replaced.

This in unbecoming of Alton.

Click image to access B&H Photo’s very useful ‘Explora’.

Two days ago I pointed you towards a lens tutorial in ‘Explora‘. I started checking out ‘Explora’ around that time.

I have been impressed. Good quality, no-nonsense, germane posts.

Now as you know I check-out “DPReview” multiple times a day — since I don’t want to miss anything.

But I am going to add ‘Explora’ to my list of camera resources. So I thought I should share that with you.
