We Have A Fairly Serious Drought In New Hampshire — And Nobody Is Talking About It.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, we have had rain over the last few weeks, but it hasn’t been much and it has been well spaced out. We haven’t had any decent rain in some time. I first noticed the dropping water levels in the lakes on Thursday, September 19, 2019, when I hiked the backroads of New Durham while Teischan was volunteering at the Library. Noticed that a small lake I walked by was noticeably low.

Then yesterday I walked past this ‘local’ (to I in that it is just 1.5 miles from home) pond that I am very familiar with. It was nearly dry. Never seen it this empty and at a minimum I walk by it once a month.

Not good. Nothing to panic as yet. Plenty of ground water. That I know. Plus we will have snow within the month!

But, I just thought that somebody should be paying more attention. Now you know.

Teischan (13) Volunteering, Helping Out Kids, At The ‘New Durham’ Library Today.

by Anura Guruge

Helping younger kids is something she really enjoys and is a natural at.

This was her, helping out at an afterschool program at ‘New Durham’ library this afternoon. She loved it and actually did quite a bit.

She did a fair amount of similar volunteering at this library over the Summer. Probably 9 or 12 hours. Maybe more.

This is becoming a forte. She is helping out at school too.

It is good. Something else that goes with her art.

New Hampshire Libraries Out Of Solar Eclipse Glasses For Monday — As Are Stores!

You might still be in luck with some of the other libraries.

Be careful with what you find in local stores. They might not be ‘good‘ (i.e., strong/dark) enough.

Might be getting too late for ordering online. But, you could try.

All the best. The skies over New Hampshire should be CLEAR for Monday’s PARTIAL solar eclipse over New Hampshire.

“Dartmouth College Library” Has An Outstanding, Extremely Handy ‘Ask A Librarian’ Service.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the outstanding, ever so helpful “Dartmouth College Library” ‘Ask a Librarian’ service.

When you live in the sticks as I do (or for that matter in most parts of New Hampshire) it is not that easy getting to a LARGE, academic library.

And there are some things that you still cannot access online. {SMILE}

This morning I needed something ‘eyeballed’ at a library and going to my ever so friendly local library would not have helped.

I was hoping I might be able to send in an e-mail inquiry. So, I started with Dartmouth — because I have nothing but utmost respect for them.

Wow. Better than e-mail. Online Chat.

And WOW again. Were they helpful. Online …. bang, bang, bang …

Looked it up for me, both in print and with one of their SUBSCRIPTION services. I was thrilled and amazed. What service.

I have the answer.

One thing that AMUSED me. Dartmouth does not have a copy of the original, first edition, 1928 “Oxford English Dictionary“. They only have the 2002 edition. No doubt, at some stage, somebody threw away the 1928 edition as obsolete. Shame.

Another fun event at the Gilman Library” in Alton, New Hampshire.

It was so good to meet the other authors. As ever made me appreciate my limitations.

Many thanks to Roza Benoit, Holly Brown & Lily Yari for making this happen. Bravo.

My friend and frequent collaborator ‘Mark T.’ is a longtime and avid collector of papal coins. I have done many posts about his papal coins in my (old) “Popes and Papacy” blog.

Go to “Popes and Papacy” and search on ‘coins’ or click on the coins, to the right, to take you to a post that will serve as a good start.

This is a Billon Denaro Paparino of Urban VI (#203), 1378 to 1389, the LAST non-cardinal to be elected pope. He proved to be more than a handful. Not a coincidence that they have never elected a non-cardinal since! And he was 600 years ago. I have a LOT about him in my “Next Pope 2011” book.

on the left image (two keys), starting from the upper right, S PETRVS ET PAVL (i.e., Saints Peter and Paul).

Another restitution medal (c. 1710) engraved by Giovanni Battista Pozzo, of John VI (#85), 701 to 705. So this coin minted 1,ooo years after his death!

Another one by the same artist/engraver, of Portuguese physician John XXI (#188), 1276 – 1277 who died when the ceiling of his hastily constructed library, in Viterbo [Italy], collapsed on him. So this was 500 years after his death.
